The forbidden forest, it was of course forbidden to students but that didn't mean that people actually listened. Aaliyah had seen students entering and leaving the forest before and had been in the edges of the woods a few times herself. For some reason she felt like she belonged in the forest more than she belonged with the rest of the Hogwarts students and staff. She enjoyed the secluded feeling that the forest offered her and relished in the silence that it produced. The only reason more students didn't break the rules and venture into the forest was because they were afraid of what it might hold. Aaliyah wasn't exactly afraid of the forest, sure it set her hair on edge sometimes but overall she found it rather peaceful. Maybe because she wasn't so unlike the creatures that hid inside of it despite how much she tried to pretend she was.
Aaliyah had been drinking strictly animal blood for a while now, years, because she was trying to escape the truth of what she was. Being a half vampire meant she didn't need as much blood to survive as a full vampire did but the idea of feeding on a human made her physically ill and it had been a long time since she had been able to stomach human blood. It had made her father angry to no end but now he just accepted it, still protesting at times but realizing it was getting him nowhere. Ever since she had made the change to animal blood she had noticed a rift form between her and Galen, she wasn't sure if it was because of the fact that she hated human blood or that he hated animal blood. Maybe they were just getting older and didn't have as much in common as they once did, who knows. All she knew what that she and her brother had been irritating each other a lot more lately than they ever had before.
Aaliyah now made her way into the confines of the forest glancing first behind her to make sure she wasn't being followed. She actually wasn't dressed in her uniform today, a rare sight, because she didn't have classes. She was wearing a long black and white dress and had her long brunette hair tossed up into a messy bun. She made her way to her favorite spot and sat down on a boulder that was there just giving herself some time to think. The only other noises were the noises of the forest, the creatures in it. Of course they could attack her if they pleased and while she was only half vampire she could defend herself pretty well so she wasn't all that worried. She let out a deep sigh and then closed her eyes letting her mind wander and relying only on her hearing to warn her of intruders.

Dominic was not one of those students that had too great of an aversion to the Forbidden Forest. It wasn’t because he was brazen, or because he didn’t think that there was anything to fear in the woods, but because Dominic had an understanding and an awareness of the danger that lived within. Fear was solely psychological and if he had the good sense to acknowledge and respect the potential threats in the Forbidden Forest then there wasn’t much reason to be afraid, now was there. It was that sort of utilitarian thinking that allowed Dom to venture in and out of the forest with his nerves getting shaken. Aside from his attentiveness Dominic was also familiar with the woods in general, compliments of many years of hunting with his grandfather.
As he took a leisurely stroll along the grounds, his classes out for the day, homework completed, proofed and done up in a nice, elegant script, thorough and precise, it was a whim that Dominic had allowed himself to indulge in. The black trousers that he wore, as were all his clothing, were custom tailored to fit him perfectly, pressed and crisp so that he constantly looked presentable. Coupled with that was an equally as immaculate white oxford shirt, short sleeved, a green and yellow checkered sweater vest over top, and, because of the chilly weather, a black wool double-breasted peacoat, left unbuttoned layered over all the other. His footsteps were light and agile, surprising for a young buck of his size. Along this walk of his however, something of interest caught his attention. Aaliyah, Galen’s sister slipping into the Forbidden Forest, unaccompanied, and in semi-formal wear.
A dozen or so scenarios crossed through his mind. The most predominant of which was that perhaps Aaliyah had a date that she was meeting in the forest. She did look awfully nice. But what a strange place to meet and, with the options that were on the table, the most logical and gentlemanly, thing to do was to follow her in. She was his best mates sister after all and if Galen wasn’t around to make sure that everything was on the up and up then it was Dominic’s duty, not only as a friend, but also as a man, to make sure that Aaliyah was safe and sound. Venturing in himself Dominic soon came upon Aaliyah sitting on a rock. “Pardon me for the intrusion Aaliyah.” Dominic was quick to say. “But I wanted to make sure that everything was okay. I saw you come in alone. Are you meeting someone perhaps?” It really wasn’t his place to ask, but a simple yes or no would tell him whether he should stay or go. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

It wasn't that long before her silence and solitude was interrupted, of course it was hard for her to be angry when she realized who it was that had entered her little clearing. The voice of course she recognized before she even opened her eyes to match the face with the voice. Dominic. Her brother's best friend and a real cutie if she did say so herself. But being as he was her brother's best friend that sort of put him off limits for her sadly at the moment. Liyah shifted her seat to face him and smiled lightly "Just here alone. Wasn't planning on meeting anyone, just felt like enjoying the solitude of the forest" she replied wondering how he had just happened to see her entering the forest. The only way he would have just happened to see her was if he too had been down by the forest, she had been right about more students than just her breaking the rules.
"So what were you doing that caused you to just happen across me walking into the forest? Skipping class? Breaking the rules? I thought you were so much better than that" she replied with a teasing laugh and rested her head on her hands. She had always heard her brother talk about how Dominic was such a good guy, never telling lies or really doing anything bad for that matter. Liyah herself was a pretty good girl but that didn't mean that she never slipped up or gave into her wilder side. Sometimes it was just too tempting and sometimes she had to let loose and have a little fun, but don't tell her brother that, or any of her family for that matter.
A blush of color tinted Liyah's cheeks as she remembered what had happened only a week or so ago. Galen and her had been fighting and as a punishment their older sister Angel had locked them, herself and Dominic in a room for the night. In order to kill some time Liyah had suggested truth or date which had eventually led to Galen daring Dom to kiss both of his sisters. Dom had kissed Liyah first, gentle and sweet and then had kissed Angel the same way. It had made Liyah jealous to watch them and that was when she had realized that she had a crush on Dominic. Probably just a school girl crush but she would neve really know now would she. "You don't have to protect me you know. I am pretty sure I can handle myself better than you could handle me...I mean, that didn't come out right" she said with a laugh.

A relief washed over Dominic that he couldn’t quite explain. A part of it surely had to be that he wanted to make sure that Aaliyah wasn’t out there on some secret rendezvous, for Galen’s sake of course as Dominic knew he wouldn’t take to kindly to something like that happening betwixt his sister and some unknown person. However, that was only a small part of it. The relief that he felt was also contributed to the fact that he was grateful that she wasn’t meeting anyone. The thought of it didn’t sit well with him. Perhaps it was the high opinion that he held for Aaliyah that made him think that there weren’t many young men out there good enough for her.
Her laughter, though teasing, was pleasant to listen to, almost like tiny silver bells ringing out a sweet melody. Dominic didn’t break the rules, nor did he skip class for anything less than an emergency. “I was simply taking a stroll when I saw you venture in from a distance.” This the case here the emergency that had influenced Dom to follow her in, effectively breaking the rules by doing so, had been his concern for her well being.
A patient smile adorned his lips at her flustering. “But of course. I would never question otherwise, however just because you might not need my protection does not mean that you still aren’t entitled to it.” The sexual innuendo had not escaped Dominic but he was too much the gentleman to make any sort of capitalization on it. There was no sense in embarrassing her for a cheap thrill. It did manage to remind him of the brief kiss that they had shared, which Dominic was sure had been meant to cause in embarrassment. He had meant what he said though and amongst those few seconds that their lips had been joined Dominic had felt something, what that something was though remained but a mystery to him, for the time being. He couldn’t entertain those sorts of thoughts regardless, there were certain things that one did not do in order to keep a friendship solid and putting the moves on your best mate’s sister without his permission was rather high on that list. “I’m sorry to have interrupted on your alone time.” Dominic’s head bowed apologetically. “Would you like to get back to it or may I stay and keep you company?” He still didn’t particularly like the idea of her being out there alone.

So indeed it turned out that Dominic hadn't been breaking any rules, he had simply been strolling along and caught sight of her from a distance. She supposed that made sense and knew that her brother would be thrilled to know that his best friend was keeping an eye on his sister. That was what tended to suck about being the girl in a family, especially a girl in a family with a number of boys. To top it all off Galen and her were two of the three triplets of their family so that made their ties just that much closer. Sure they fought a lot and generally they fought about how over protective Galen was but they did care for each other, they just didn't like to admit it. "Well I am sure my brother would be happy to know you were looking out for me" she replied, not meaning it in a mean or sarcastic way, just stating a mere fact or opinion.
Aaliyah listened to what he had to say and then shrugged her shoulders, "It wouldn't bother me any if you stayed. As long as you don't mind being in here" she replied with a smile signaling to the forest around her. She knew Dominic didn't like to break rules, but by being here he was and she wasn't sure whether that would make him uneasy or not. Aaliyah didn't mind his company really, almost anyone else and she would have told them to move along before she made them move along but Dominic was a nice person to be around so it didn't bother her.
"So how is dear Galen, hopefully staying out of trouble for Angel's sake. I am not sure why she tries to act like she has control over him. I mean sure I will get angry with him and point out mistakes but I know in the end I am not going to stop him, can't say he would be the same way with me though" she replied. She knew that there were things that she may let him get away with that he probably wouldn't let her get away with. That was why she just had to be sneaky and make sure not to get caught doing the things he would disapprove of. Glancing around her she smiled softly "Most people find this place unnerving, I find it kind of peaceful" this statement was more of a rhetorical statement than anything else, sort of off topic but just something that had crossed her mind. She wondered why people let themselves get so worked up about something that wasn't even really that bad.

It definitely would please Galen to know that he was keeping a watchful eye on Aaliyah, she certainly wasn’t wrong about that. Galen was hardly a saint himself when it came to the opposite sex. The boy was flirty and often acted out on his urges, giving the ladies that bad boy charm that so many found appealing. Did that make Galen hypocritical for wanting to keep Aaliyah away from those type boys? Not in Dominic’s opinion. In fact if anyone was in a position to have an aversion to having their sister fall for that, it would have been the ones who knew first hand the damages that it could cause to her emotions. Aaliyah was a sweet girl, a tad bit anti-social, but sweet nonetheless. She didn’t need to involve herself with the type that would lead to heartache. That was all Galen really wanted, or so Dominic was under the impression, he wanted to help prevent any unnecessary pain being caused to Aaliyah. “It isn’t just for your brother’s sake.” Dominic informed vaguely.
“I don’t mind in the least.” He wasn’t afraid of the Forbidden Forest nor did he have a desire to explore it, more a state of indifference toward the location. Dominic appreciated the beauty that it held. Everything was so rich with colour in the woods the earth seemed to be more vibrant and alive giving him a sense of adoration for the serenity that the musical forest could bring. With the birds chirping, whistling short melodies back an forth to one another, rodents scurrying about foraging for food, the sound of leaves rustling in the canopy over head, all the wonders of the woods being viewed through grateful eyes. He wasn’t uneasy in the forest, but comfortable. The misfortune of breaking the rules in the process was far outweighed by the benefits of staying.
Galen was much the same as he always was. Even if he tried to stay out of trouble, trouble usually found him. Some things were simply unavoidable it seemed. “You’re right. He is more likely to be overly persistent about stopping you from doing something he doesn’t like than to accept your decisions.” Dominic was always quick to defend his friend though. “But you have to understand that the reason behind this intrusion to you personal life is only from the best of intentions.” He had been trying to make that point the night that Angelica had locked them all up in that room. “Even the best of intentions though can often be misguided. Galen cares about you, his way of showing it just has some unfortunate consequences.” The biggest one being that Aaliyah easily became fed up with him and allowed herself to be sucked into the vicious circle time and time again, slinging insults at one another rather than recognizing what truly was going on.
“It is peaceful here.” Dominic glanced around taking everything in once again, from the flowered weeds to the great oak tree. “I’ve always liked the woods, especially the one that borders my grandparents property line.” Technically his grandfather still owned that land but it wasn’t part of the house’s grounds. “As a boy I used to spend evenings caught fireflies with this girl from the village. Ever since then it’s been an excellent place to indulge in some healthy self-reflection.” Turning his gaze back to Aaliyah he spent a moment admiring her beauty. “Do you have a special place like that?” He realized that in the time that he and Galen had been friends he hadn’t learned that much about Aaliyah. It was poor form on his part. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

So Dominic did care about Aaliyah at least in some way, shape or form. Whether it was that he just cared about her because she was his best friend's sister or whether he cared about her as more than that, it didn't matter much really she supposed. He had admitted in some round about way that he was keeping an eye on her not only for her brother's sake which must mean that he was watching out for her to set his mind at peace as well. That made her feel...special she supposed, well maybe not special but it created a warmth in her like knowing that someone other than her family cared about her made things better somehow. "Good to know that people are interested in me" she replied with a small laugh.
"I'm glad you don't mind the forest. There aren't many other places that I really like to spend my time, too crowded and all that. It is nice to know that I am not just some weirdo that likes to hang out in creepy places" she replied with another small laugh moving a strand of her hair that had escaped behind her ear. Sure the forbidden forest wasn't exactly the most picturesque forest in the world, it had odd creatures and even odder plants but somehow it was just a nice place to be while she was stuck at school. The way she talked most people would think that she hated school, but it wasn't so much that she hated school on the contrary she loved to learn, what she hated was all of the people. She had never been much of a people person as it was and being in a school with hundreds maybe even thousands of other students. Very few shared her secrets.
Liyah rolled her eyes playfully when he broke into a speech about how Galen really did care about her and that he only acted completely insane because of that. "Yeah yeah yeah, I know he cares and all. It is a whole sibling rivalry thing and has probably gotten worse as we have gotten older because now we are both interested in dating and such but he doesn't think anyone out there is good enough for me. Maybe he is right, but I need to make those decisions on my own. I am not so special that I need some perfect guy, I just want someone to accept me for what I am and know that I will never be well normal" she replied with a sigh. She hadn't meant to jump into a full on lecture but it had just happened that way. Of course there was going to be at least one guy out there for her, she just hadn't found the right one yet and figured not many people did until they were older anyway.
She smiled softly as he talked about his special place at his grandpa's house. Then he asked her if she had a special place like that and really she had to think about it. "Well there is this hideaway at my house, it is in my room. There is like a little door in the corner that leads to a small crawl space. When I was little I used to go in there and spend some time so that I could be alone. I guess that would have to be my special place as far as I can remember. Now I just look for places that I can have some peace like here for instance. I love nature, always kind of have but now I think I enjoy it and appreciate it more than I did before" she replied playing with some flowers that rested in the ground at her feet.

He found it a terribly awful shame that Aaliyah felt that way about herself. She was such a beautiful person from what he had seen of her, had a brightness within her that could stun and mystify even the most unyielding of men, and yet Aaliyah didn’t seem to know it. In the course of her life, even though she might have been quiet and kept mostly to herself Dominic had witnessed it happen on many occasions. A simply friendly smile from her in the direction of someone that had needed it had made all the difference in the world to that person. She had touched more people than she would ever realize. Yet Aaliyah laughed at the mere idea that there were people out there that were interested in her.
“Oh but the forest isn’t creepy.” Dominic countered politely. “Sometimes people assume something is bad because it is different- that just isn’t the case in reality. I don’t consider you a weirdo in the least. You just know how to see past the surface of things to see the truth of the matter. It is a very rare gift.” It was this sort of inspirational enlightenment that he often used on Galen as well. Dominic hoped that he was appealing to her better nature and not being a bother by preaching to her, as it could be considered by some.
When romance came into the picture Dominic could really relate to her struggle. He was an only child for the most part as he got to see his half-brother maybe four times a year. That didn’t stop him from attempting to see it from both siblings stand point. On the one hand Aaliyah was right, she should be trusted enough to make her own decisions and learn from her mistakes. But Galen’s point was just as legitimate too. He didn’t want Aaliyah to have to feel the heartache that came with the territory. He nodded pensively. “No on is perfect.” Dominic moved closer to Aaliyah carefully, so as not to create any creases in his trousers, perched his bum on the edge of the boulder, more leaning against it than sitting. “But that doesn’t mean that there still isn’t someone out there that is perfect for you.” His gaze turned upon her. “A point of interest, if I might add, I think you are very special. You should too.”
Her special place sounded charming, nothing too extravagant but still spectacular in her own mind compliments of the fond memories that were associated with it. An idyllic smile formed gently in Dominic’s lips silently listening to the way that her voice floated out of her mouth so sweetly. “Perhaps you can show it to me when I visit next time?” That was a lot to ask though, wasn’t it? Dominic didn’t want to make Aaliyah feel obligated to show him or anything.

Aaliyah nodded in understanding when he stated that people tend to think something is dangerous just because it is different. "People fear that which they don't understand" she sighed, witnessing just how much that statement was true at many different points in her life. Sure she was in a community full of witches and wizards, some vampires, some veelas and some werewolves none of which would be considered normal to muggles. But like there is discrimination and stereotyping among muggle races there is the same between magic races. Witches and wizards still feared vampires and werewolves, some not all of course. There were some people that just didn't care what you were or who, nothing really ever freaked them out. It all just depended on who you ran into and who knew what you were on how they were gonna react.
She smiled when he complimented her about being able to see past the surface of things. "That is probably because I am different, I see past the surface of other people and other things because I want others to then in turn see past the surface of me. Sure there are people that don't care about me being half vampire, but then there are others that avoid me like the plague, fearful that I might bite them. I believe in getting to know someone, or at least trying to your best ability, before you judge who they really are" she replied with a small shrug. That was just her thinking on the matter though and it didn't mean that it was right now was it wrong it was just how she had decided to live her life and so far it was working out well enough for her.
She had to laugh a little when he started talking about her finding not necessarily the perfect person but rather the perfect person for her. "Yeah but I have to find not only the perfect person for me but also the perfect person for my brother and most likely the rest of my family so the poor guy doesn't get eaten" she said this in a joking tone, partially it was true but she didn't really think her family would eat her boyfriend even if they did hate him. "Finding someone perfect for my brother would be almost impossible, I would have to date someone that he really trusted, liked and knew which means someone he was friends with. Which is off limits cause you know the whole don't date your brother's friends thing" she said this too with a small laugh. She could see it know, guys lined up against a wall and Galen inspecting them one by one to judge whether they were good enough, of course that wouldn't happen but it was a funny picture in her mind at least.
"Well thank you. I can see why Galen is just good friends with you, you have an uncanny way to make someone feel better in the end" she replied meaning it as a compliment and hoping that he took it that way. She wanted to admit that she thought he was special too but instead held her tongue. If she admitted one feeling then she didn't think she would be able to keep the rest of her feelings in check and so decided to stick with thanking him for now. She looked thoughtful for a moment when he talked of her special place and after a moment she shrugged and nodded "I could show it to you sometime, it isn't really that special anymore. I haven't even gone in there for years but it might be kinda fun to see what is still hidden inside of it" she replied with a smile and shifted herself on the rock so she was facing towards him, face and body now instead of just turning her face to him.

There was a lot that people feared. Misconceptions were common with ignorance. He had always tried to be an understanding person, never judging people for what they were but rather who they were as a person. It was a rather sentimental view on life, attempting to follow that proverb of not judging a book but its cover, but Dominic did his best to live by it. Perhaps that was silly to base your methods on something so unrelated, to think that if it was true that appearances of book could be deceiving and a tattered or blemished binding could contain some of the richest, most intriguing context then it was true for people too- in Dominic’s experience though, it was the truth. “Human beings are still evolving. I’m sure eventually fruition will weed out the prejudice in the world.” That, however, was a very questionable thing. If people were so evolved as to no longer have differing opinions wouldn’t that take away what it was that made them human in the first place?
Dominic nodded his agreement. It was interesting that Aaliyah felt that way considering she wasn’t much to actually branch out and get to know people. That was understandable though. She had to worry about more things than just having an unpleasant interaction with someone. Because Aaliyah was part vampire she was probably worried that she might slip and bite someone, or hurt them in some other way if her temper flared. It was a valid concern, but Dominic didn’t think that she shouldn’t try because of it. “If Galen can make friends then someone as sweet natured as you should have no problem.” His and Galen’s friendship was quite the odd coupling. Everyone thought so. They didn’t have all that much in common, in fact they were complete opposites, but somehow they had a strong bond of friendship. Funny how things like that work out. Aaliyah would be able to find that good friend too, probably many more, if she simply tried.
Pursing his lips, the action only last for a moment before the corners of his mouth turned upward into an amused smile. “That does make things a tad more complicated for you.” He conceded putting his arms behind him to brace himself on the boulder. It would take a very brave man to step into that den and not be so intimidated that he came running out with fearful tears in his eyes, especially since he knew how Galen could be about that stuff. The entire family all together would be tenfold. “The same for your brothers friends. There is a code of not dating your best friend’s sisters too.” Dominic informed not realizing, until it was a fraction of a second too late, that he had specified his predicament rather than generalized it to include any friend. Was that one of those Freudian slips that he had heard tale of? Nothing like that had every happened to him before, Dominic was always really good at saying exactly what he meant to say and meaning what he said.
The compliment that was offered to him had Dominic pushing his previous concerns away to offer Aaliyah an appreciative smile. “You’re welcome. I’m not sure if my way is all that uncanny-maybe uncommon, just a natural perception of truth.” Dominic always told the truth, it was like Galen had said, so if he spoke truth then it stood to reason that he saw truth too. It was the logic that he was sticking to at least. “I would like that very much.” A sense of trust was being established between them, which pleased Dom. With what Aaliyah had said early it lead him to think that it was her that had the trust issues, not just the people that she came into contact with- otherwise she wouldn’t have cared if they thought she might bite them- it was a worry of hers thought of as a worry of theirs.

Aaliyah had to smile when he spoke of the human race, he spoke as if he weren't one of them but rather an outsider looking in on them. "You sure are optimistic about things aren't you?" she replied with a smile. It was kind of nice that he did have high hopes and optimism for the human race because not many people did. She knew that despite her trying to always think the best of people she didn't always hold high hopes for some. He was probably right though, maybe someday people would eventually realize that it doesn't really matter what is on the outside, the inside is where you find the true person. Humans will be humans though and humans have imperfections so things will never be completely perfect and peaceful.
Aaliyah nodded when Dom stated that if Galen could make good friends than she should be able to make them as well with no problems. Of course it wasn't always that easy for her because of her insecurities. More often than not she would shut herself off from the people around her because she wasn't willing to let herself get hurt like she had in the past. It hadn't taken her long to get to the point of not really trusting people, even her family had failed her before. It wasn't something she generally liked to talk about but she had learned to distrust her father a long time ago. Growing up he had seemed great enough but when she had rejected human blood he had flipped on her, finally striking her. He hadn't really meant to and sure he apologized but it had really hurt Liyah's feelings and left her with doubts about people in general. Sure it wasn't fair to let one or two bad experiences ruin your opinion of people in general but it had happened and maybe someday that would change.
What came out next evened the playing field just a little bit. Now they both had sort of, in some round-a-bout way, told each other that they each liked the other. Of course it wasn't exactly flat out saying that they liked each other but Liyah was pretty sure he had just hinted to having at least entertained the idea of dating her. This was when she decided it might be kind of fun to joke around a little, lighten the situation or something along those lines. "Well Mister Whittington, are you indeed admitting that you have entertained the idea of dating your best friend's sister? Shame, shame" she replied with a teasing laugh and made the shame, shame motion with her hands. She liked joking around and having fun more than being serious all the time because well being serious was just boring really.
Liyah nodded when he said that he would enjoy seeing her not so secret place sometime. "In turn you will have to show me your's sometime, that way we both are even" she replied with a smile. It would be nice to see his special place as well to know what he grew up around. Dom had been around her family for a long time now, a few years at the very least and Liyah had only now just begun to really see him. She didn't know why it was happening now but for some reason she wanted to get to know him now whereas before she hadn't really given him a second thought. Before he had just been her brother's friend but now he was a great guy and she saw him as attractive now. Getting older tended to change relationships like that she supposed, and only more time would tell where things were going.

Optimism could often times be vastly under rated. What was the big deal at looking at the positive in life and seeing the glass as half full? It was what helped Dominic get through life despite all the negatives that came along. Where he couldn’t account for genocide, he could take comfort in knowing that people cared enough to step in and do something about it. And though Dominic didn’t have much influence in the world, he was soothed by the knowledge that one voice could speak loud enough to influence others. The world wasn’t perfect and neither were the people in it, but there was still hope, which was probably the most powerful thing out there. “I try to be at least.”
He was faced with a bit of a dilemma here. He could hear that Aaliyah was just being playful in her question, teasing him a little bit as the opportunity had so nicely presented itself. But she also knew that he was pretty much incapable of telling a lie. It wasn’t just a moral thing, though it was the biggest part of it, but also he was a terrible liar. Dominic would get flustered, trip over his words, he couldn’t make eye contact, often times his cheek would glow with a blush, and his voice even raised an octave when he attempted to lie. So what was the point in it even if he had wanted to? Anyone who had spent just a day with him would know that it was highly uncharacteristic of him to do any of those things. So was he going to tell her the truth here or just let the question be passed by not dignifying it with so much as an acknowledgment?
“It has crossed my mind.” Dominic answered, clearly going, predictable as it was, for his usual choice of telling the truth. “But, as you mentioned, it is a shame. Galen is my best friend and you’re his sister. I couldn’t very well show any interest in you without first receiving his blessing.” There was also his involvement with Payton to take into consideration. He wasn’t dating her, nor had it even been discussed, but they did have something going on between them. It seemed, however, that Payton had something going on with Galen too, which Dominic really wasn’t too pleased about. He hadn’t questioned either party too much on the matter though so he couldn’t go accusing or assuming anything.
“I’d be happy to show you the forest by my house though.” He replied a moment later, not giving Aaliyah time enough to react to what he had just said. It wasn’t just for his sake though. No, Dominic was thinking of her when he had offered a scapegoat so that, if it made her too uncomfortable, Aaliyah wouldn’t even have to say anything about what he had revealed to her. What was there to say really?

Liyah smiled when he said that he tried to be optimistic at least. It was good thing. Not too many people were like him and it was refreshing really to be around someone that was. He was honest, kind and genuine, traits that had been pretty much lost in the human race for a while now. It was rare to find someone that was like Dom, but Liyah was happy that she at least know someone like him. He was good at putting things into perspective no matter what it was or so it seemed. Plus she liked the fact that he could lie, that meant that she didn't really have to worry about whether or not he was just sparing her feelings or really telling the truth. Guys were usually horrible about telling girls the truth.
Liyah figured that some girl would be really lucky someday to have Dom. She did wonder though why he was even single now. A guy like him would or should have girls all over him, but then again maybe girls are just too into the bad boy thing to even pay attention to the great guy that Dom was. Liyah knew that while the bad guy did have appeal, Dom was something much more great than that in the end. They say nice guys finish last, probably because the nice guys aren't appreciated until the douche bag breaks the girls heart. Luckily Liyah hadn't ever had her heart broken, and she wasn't looking forward to it happening someday.
When Dom admitted that it had crossed his mind and then told her that he would need approval from Galen before even pursuing her Liyah nodded "That is understandable" was all she really had to say about it. She could have said more, could have made the situation so much worse but instead she decided to spare both him and her. It was kind of nice to know that Dominic liked her though, he had clearly stated that he would have to ask Galen before showing any interest in her, he didn't say before showing any interest in one of her other sisters. For once Liyah felt like the special one because someone as great as Dom had noticed her. It wasn't exactly an ideal situation and things could easily go bad but she hoped that they would someday work out and that Galen would actually think about what she wanted before making his decision.
"I would like that" she replied with a smile, allowing him to make the change in subject so that neither one of them would have to sit their awkwardly trying to figure out what to say next. She was just happy to know that someone other than her family cared about her, that someone out there actually liked her despite her being different, it was nice and gave her a little bit of hope that her life might be just that much more normal in the future.

It was true that Dominic was single. He wasn’t entirely sure that it all had to do with his own choice, but it did play a contributing role in the decision. Dom had never been much for rash or impulsive antics. He was the type that thought everything through and tried to go about his life in a practical approach. There were so many lovely young ladies out there that to pick one that he could give everything that they deserved and more was a big thing. It wasn’t that he was having trouble deciding which was worth, but that he was having trouble deciding which was most worthy and who he clicked with best. Being the amiable sort that he was it was easy to get along with people but Dominic, if it wasn’t too selfish, wanted more than to just click with someone. He wanted a physical and emotional connection with the girl that would make the relationship long lasting.
This dilemma, however, didn’t stop him from treating all females with the respect that they deserved, offering them compliments and sweet gestures, which, in some people’s eyes, could make him out to be a charmer, or even a player in some cases. Dominic had never disputed that and, though his methods were far different than Galen, he supposed that was part of the reason they were such great friends- a big part of the reason that he were friends with a lot of other guys too, because they had one major commonality; an appreciation, or conquest in some of the other guy’s opinion, of women.
He was relieved that Aaliyah had taken what he had said as gracefully as she did. All that pent up worry simply melted away leaving him with a refreshed feeling. It had been irrational maybe to be too worried about how she might have taken it. Dominic didn’t want her feeling uncomfortable around him and, in his experience that could have easily been the case once she was aware that he did like her. Aaliyah was a bright young woman though. Surely she would have realized that his admittance was merely an offer to get to know her better so that feelings could perhaps formulate. Light conversation was perfectly acceptable, but if they got in too deep he would have to excuse himself. He had yet to speak to Galen, which was essential if Dominic had any intentions of becoming better acquainted with Aaliyah. There was a standard that he operated by and to divert too far off that path would be to lose who he was as a person.
Dominic liked Aaliyah’s smile, it made her look all the more beautiful and sparked within her the light that he was so very fond of in a person. “It’s not as grandiose as this forest, but there is this small brook that runs through it leading to the lake. During the summers I like to walk barefoot along it and these tiny minnows have a bad habit of trying to nibble at one’s toes.” He realized how childish the little tid bit had been, but that didn’t negate the fact that it was still one of those simple pleasures in life that Dominic indulged in on occasion. “Regardless, I think you’ll enjoy it.” Aaliyah never had been to his house before, not that many had, being a muggleborn and the fact that the majority of his summer wasn’t even spent in Nottingham anymore, but in Brazil with his father, it did make it difficult to bring people home. He could make the time for Aaliyah though.

Sometimes people wondered why Liyah herself was single considering she was indeed a good looking girl. Nice body, nice attitude most of the time and nice smile but in all reality she was too closed off to ever let anyone that close to her. She had dated in the past, short relationships at most, but had ended up chasing the guys away because she was always kept people at arms length. Almost every single guy had broken up with her saying you are a great girl and gorgeous but I can't deal with being shut out all the time. Sure it got irritating but even when Liyah did try to open up more she instantly shut herself back down. It would take someone with real patience to get her to actually let her walls down.
Pretty girl, broken past, unknown future, blah, blah, blah. It was all things she had thought of before, her life was such a cliche really. She had a big family, was a triplet, had an annoying but loving brother, a perfect older sister, a semi abusive father, a caring mother and heaps of younger siblings. She was bitchy at times, quiet at others and she hated her vampire half. She refused to drink human blood which just made being a vampire that much more irritating and to polish it all off she was crushing on her brother's best friend. She rubbed her temples lightly, absentmindedly. Finally she glanced back at Dom and offered a small smile. She was keeping her thoughs to herself because really there was no reason to discuss them at all, it didn't matter at this point at least but it may in the future so she would save them until then.
"I could use some normalcy in my life, god knows that is true" she replied with a laugh. Liyah liked it that Dom was a muggleborn because that meant he had a lot of experiences that she hadn't really been able to experience and she enjoyed hearing about them. "So what was it like? Being raised as a muggle?" she asked, loving to hear the different stories that she knew he could and hoped he would tell. Liyah enjoyed learning and hearing about things she wasn't familiar with because it allowed her to broaden her horizons and understand more of the world outside of her family and school. Liyah didn't fit in well with muggles at all, being a predator technically, a myth and not too keen on the sun meant she didn't exactly blend well.
"By the way I am glad you followed me in here. I like talking to you. I feel like I can actually talk to you. You don't look at me like you are afraid I might eat you like some people do. You know exactly who I am personality wise and not and yet you are still here, thanks" she replied pulling her knees up to her chest. She meant it, thanks as a friend. She wasn't trying to push him for more or anything, she just really appreciated that he was there to talk to, it was a nice change of scenery for her.

Paying keen attention to your companion was customary for Dominic. It was all about eye contact and making it abundantly clear that you were listening to what they had to say. Not only that but it was easier for him to figure out where he stood with any given person if he had the sense to observe their body language and expressions. Something, whatever was currently on Aaliyah mind, seemed to upset her, or perhaps agitate because she was massaging her temples in a rather soothing gesture. Thinking back to everything that he had said to her so far Dominic was trying to figure out if something he said had triggered such a reaction.
Nothing but the mention of his potential attraction to her, in his opinion, could have made Aaliyah feel irritated. It had to be something of a tangent in her thoughts rather than something directly caused by him. Being a compassionate sort of person Dominic had the urge to reach out and give her a sympathetic touch, just a small gesture to let Aaliyah know that he was there for her. His hand began to stretch toward her but before it could get too close Dom withdrew. He had said that he wouldn’t make any moves on her until he had Galen’s blessing. Such a gesture could be misconstrued easily. Closing his hand into a fist he rested it on his knee willing it to stay put.
What was it like to be raised muggle? No one had ever asked him that before. For Dominic there wasn’t really anything too fascinating about it, but for someone that wasn’t knowledgeable in the subject he could see how it might be. When Dominic had found out about the wizarding world it had been of interest to him so wouldn’t it be vice versa too? “It is subjective to all the variables that the wizarding world has, such as social standings, personalities and beliefs of parents or guardians.” Dominic’s best guess was that Aaliyah wanted to know what it had been like specifically for him though.
“I was raised by my grandparents for the most part. My mother got pregnant at a young age while she was still in school to become a doctor and my father was still in Brazil not knowing that I existed. My grandfather taught me most of what I know about the world and my grandmother was the one that taught me how to act in society- well mannered, good form, sporting, chivalrous…” Aaliyah didn’t need a condensed list of his personality traits though she had been witness to them already. “My mother died when I was still young so my grandparents continued to care for me. The only real difference about being a muggle is the use of technology and the fact that there isn’t any magic, well not like there is here.”
He smiled fondly at Aaliyah as she thanked him. It really wasn’t any trouble. Dominic enjoyed being around her. As for not being fearful of her eating him, that had a lot to do with his tolerance of people in general, but also because, there was just a sense of safety that came from being around her. Dominic trusted her just as he did Galen. “You’re most welcome.” Aaliyah curling her knees up to her chest was the last straw that Dominic could take. He couldn’t sit idly by without offering his comfort, or attempting to at least. His arm came out, hand gently grasping Aaliyah’s bicep on the other side and gave her a tender side hug.

From the corner of her eye Liyah did notice the subtle movement of his hand but he countered it well by making it into a fist and resting it on his knee. She had a feeling he had been moving his hand towards her, she wasn't exactly sure why but then guessed it might have something to do with her body language. She hadn't really been paying much attention but realized that all her internal thinking was probably being radiated out through how she was moving and he probably felt she was either distressed or irritated about something. Of course in all truth she was irritated about a lot of things, none of which had to do with anything he had caused in the least. Her life in all just tended to irritate her at times, but who's didn't?
She listened intently as he told her about his life. About how he had grown up with his grandparents, lost his mother and not known his father at least when he was younger she gathered. She knew that now he went and visited with his dad in Brazil and such which she thought was good especially since he had already lost his mother. Even though Liyah didn't get on well with her father she couldn't imagine not having any member of her family not there. Each one contributed to her life in completely different ways, some more good than others and some more bad but each person in her life had influenced who she was today and she knew that. "That is awesome that you had grandparents that taught you how to be who you are today. They did a fabulous job if I do say so myself" she replied with a small laugh. She didn't know how well her parents had really done raising her, but they had raised eight kids so they must be doing something right...she hoped.
"I'm sorry to hear about your mom though, even if it did happen when you were young and all" she replied wanting to offer her condolences but realizing that he probably hadn't known her too well as it was. But still losing a family member, whether you were close to them or not, seemed like it would be hard in one way or another. She didn't want him to think she was feeling sorry for him though, she merely meant to show she was indeed listening and cared about what he was saying. "A life outside of magic just seems to impossible for me. I mean I am what most muggles would think of as the monster that goes bump in the night or some myth made up to scare people. Muggles don't even believe in either part of me. I am half vampire, half witch, one hundred percent make believe" she replied with a halfhearted laugh. Part of her wanted to live a muggle life because in her eyes, at least for now, she felt they lived normal and she didn't. Of course whether that was true or not she hadn't really figured out for herself yet.
When Dom moved his arm around her back and grasped her other arm in a friendly side hug she smiled lightly and leaned in ever so slightly to him. She did this to show she appreciated the gesture and was returning it as much as she could but not pushing it past the friendship boundary that they were currently abiding by. His touch gave her a chill though, which she did her best not to let show and made her feel a little bit happier in side, a feeling which she also kept to herself. It was easy keeping things to herself, she had done it her whole life. She was one of those bottle your feelings up type of person. It was only seconds before the happy feeling was replaced with guilt. Why guilt she wasn't really sure, it wasn't like she and Dom were together which meant she was a free girl but she still felt guilty. The guilt was from her thoughts of Alex, a guy she didn't even know and didn't even think she really liked in general but one that she nonetheless had kissed...or rather made out with. For some reason when she was around Alex she was a completely different person, a person she didn't even want to be but was still apart of her and when she was around Dom he brought out the real her, the one she kept bottled up and hidden away. She felt safe around him, like she didn't need to pretend. The Alex situation was something she did not want Dom to know about, she didn't really know why she didn't want him to know just that she didn't. "Galen is lucky to have you as a friend" she added softly with a smile.

Dominic couldn’t help but to let a smile form ever so lightly on his lips. His grandparents would be pleased to know that he was being everything that they had taught him to be, or at least amiable enough to have Aaliyah’s approval. It pleased him most certainly. If, and his mind was wondering to the possibly that some romance could form between them now, his grandparents had the opportunity to meet Aaliyah, which was now a good possibility given he had invited her over, he thought that they would like her. She was respectable, sweet, had good manners, would treat them kindly, Aaliyah was intelligent, a wonderful conversationalist, and obviously gorgeous. What wasn’t there to like about her? Well there was the issue that his grandparents barely cooped with the idea that magic, beyond parlor tricks, existed. What would they make of a half vampire? Both his grandparents operated on a need to know basis.
Whenever Dominic had ever tired to tell them about all the fascinating creatures and devices that the wizarding world had to offer his grandfather had gotten into a lecture about morals and ethic making it quite clear to Dom that just because he did have a gift did not mean that he could abuse it and take the simpler route in life. His grandfather believed that if you didn’t do anything for yourself than there was nothing worth having. As for his grandmother, at that tender age of eleven when he had been so excited to tell them all the things he had discovered, had simply patted him on the head and offered him a ‘That’s nice dear’ and went on about her business. It wasn’t that they didn’t care about his life they took an interest in him just fine. No, the issue was that they were content with being oblivious to the wizarding world, comfortable with the lives they lead. Dominic supposed that was true for most muggles, which was why the majority didn’t know of this separate world. “You can tell them yourself soon enough.” Dominic offered getting back to the conversation at hand.
Thinking of his mother wasn’t saddening for Dom, instead he stuck with the pearl of wisdom that she had left him: Don’t mourn death, but celebrate life instead. Dominic would think of her from time to time without any trigger to bring it on. He could still remember the way that her shampoo smelt, and the way that she would gather him up into a bear hug when she came home and smother him in kisses all over his face, and how her voice seemed to be more appealing than any music he had ever heard. Aaliyah’s condolences were appreciated. “Thank you. I think she would have liked you.” Unlike his grandparent, his mother would have been intrigued to hear all about the wizarding world, the creatures in it especially.
“You know, I’ve always thought that muggles tell those stories painting creatures and beings in a negative light because they need something to fear that isn’t tangible for them, when things that are all too real are looming just outside their doors. The things that go bump in the night in muggle stories are the same one’s that keep them from having a psychological breakdown due to the atrocities they face.” Hopefully Dominic was making sense to her. It didn’t have to bother Aaliyah if she didn’t let it. There was light to be seen in this particular darkness. As she cozied up to him Dominic found himself smiling again, the gesture gentle. “I could be your friend too if you’d be so kind as to have me.” After this conversation, he hoped that Aaliyah wouldn’t have any reservations in putting her trust in him as Galen did. If Dominic couldn’t yet have her as he thought he wanted then, for now, he could be sated with being a true, and official friend to her.

Aaliyah couldn't help but smile when he said that she could tell his grandparents on her own soon enough. That meant that he was serious about having her come visit his home with him sometime. Of course she had reservations about meeting his grandparents and would be nervous as all get out but for now she was just excited that he wanted to bring her home to the family, as just friends or more she wasn't sure yet. Her nervousness would arise from the fact that she was far from normal and would be afraid of scaring them off. But then again you couldn't tell she was half vampire just by looking at her really and unless they knew about vampires in general they would have no reason to assume she was anything less than human. It was handy at times being only half vampire cause that meant she wasn't as obvious as full vampires. She had of course fangs that were retractable, her skin was only slightly paler than it should be, her eyes were a normal shade of blue, she could be in the sun more directly than a full vampire but it still did bother her, a bother that she could ignore and she wasn't a crazy blood sucking freak like vampires were played out to be.
"I hope they like me" she said absentmindedly her mind racing a million miles an hour thinking about this and that. It wasn't actually a phrase she had meant to say out loud but her mind was too full of different thoughts to really regulate her speech properly. Sure she was insecure about herself, most people were and she shared that in common with them. "I can't say I would have introduced you to my father if you hadn't already met him. My mother I would be more than happy to introduce you to but my father is a different story. Lucky for me you already know my whole family so I get off easy in that perspective" she replied with a smile. Her father wasn't a man she would want to introduce anyone to, especially a boy. But Dom had been around the family for a few years now and so he knew what to expect and such. She was happy Dom wanted to make sure he had Galen's approval but hadn't mentioned needing her father's, she hoped he wouldn't insist on asking.
Aaliyah nodded in agreement with his explanation of why muggles made up such horror stories about vampires, werewolves and the like. Sure there were some mythical creatures that had sort of created their own myths, vampires had attacked and did attack muggles and other humans as did werewolves but not all. "Their life is so overwhelming they have to find something to think about that is just a little more messed up than they are so they can feel better about themselves" she replied with a small nod just adding in her thoughts about the subject. Muggles could be odd creatures but she knew better than to stereotype them all by what she knew of only a few.
"Of course I would have you as a friend, refusing that kind of offer would be insane" she replied with a broad smile. She looked up to see him smiling and wondered if he was just smiling to smile or smiling because she had cozied up to him, again another thought she didn't voice. Leaning her head ever so lightly on his shoulder she sighed a little. There had been something on her mind for a while now that she had never told anyone and now she figured, who better to tell than Dom? Without moving her head or looking at him she said in a blunt but soft voice "It isn't that I hate my father" she began "I know it may seem like that by how I describe things sometimes. It is just...well...things are different now. I used to think he was my whole world, he was great, but as I got older things changed. When I refused human blood and I mean really refused it, he wasn't happy...at all. I am almost sure he had been drinking or something, he isn't usually like he was that night. He just flipped on me, he was mad that I didn't want to be like him, he smacked me and I hit the ground. It hasn't happened since and he was sorry, I know he was but I just, I don't trust him anymore, I don't trust anyone" her voice was almost a whisper by the end. Sure there were kids out there that had it a lot worse than her, abused kids, but for her the experience had been traumatic. Her father had been her idol until that night. She didn't know why she was telling Dom, but for some reason she felt like it was the right thing to do. To finally tell someone "I haven't told anyone that, not even my family knows. My father was to embarrassed to ever bring it up again".

”I’m sure they will.” Dominic didn’t have a single doubt about it actually. He knew his grandparents very well, it sort of came with the territory of spending as much time with them as he had. They weren’t just his guardians, they had raised him, been there to make sure that he had everything he needed including, despite both being very busy people, plenty of time for him. Usually that meant tagging along in doing the things that they did for pleasure. With his grandmother it had been going to operas and ballets and for his grandfather it was hunting and fishing. He liked to think that he had been well rounded in his upbringing, though he was the meticulous sort the majority of time he had still been given those opportunities to be a kid, like playing football with some of the locals and baiting his own hooks. Dominic preferred to be clean cut, but he wasn’t squeamish when it came to getting his hands dirty either.
“Especially my grandmother. She is, I forewarn you, liable to dote on you with the utmost enthusiasm.” His grandmother loved him dearly but there was also to be said about not being able to gush over a female, discuss fashion or any other female chatter that was prone to happen when a pair or more were thrown together for any length of time. Dominic was glad that he already met her parents too. Though getting her father’s approval would be required eventually too, Dom wasn’t in the market for getting too ahead of himself. When it came to courting the parent’s approval was essential but he wasn’t even about to think on that until he got past the first obstacle, if they so wished to do so. Dealing with the proverbial ‘bro code’ was the first order of business. Before courting came interest and before he could be interested in her he needed Galen’s approval. “You would get the sweeter deal. But rightfully so.”
Dominic nodded his consent. Aaliyah seemed to have a clear grasp on what he was aiming at. She might not be an expert on muggles but she understood well enough with his explanation. “Monsters, in stories, are usually always slayed. It gives them sense of comfort, as silly as that is.” The conclusion was simple muggles needed something to keep the hope alive. But maybe that was exclusive to non-magic folk, perhaps that was true for all free-thinking beings. After all didn’t Aaliyah have something that she used as a cooping mechanism, some worse scenario that made her troubles seem a little less important. It was natural so it seemed plausible to him. A smile once again adorned his features as his offer was taken graciously. “I’m much obliged.” There was a tinge of relief in his tone that Dominic couldn’t quite place at the moment. It probably had to do with his human instinct of fearing rejection of any type- not that it was strong enough to control him or prevent him from doing anything.
It was nice that Aaliyah was opening up to him physically. Her head on his shoulder was a clear statement that she was genuine about taking his friendship. But when she revealed such a secret to him Dominic was a bit floored. She didn’t need his pity but what Dom thought she might have been seeking was, his understanding. Trust was hard to come by and easy to lose. When it came from someone that was supposed to love you unconditionally there was a barrier that was breached that made everything else be put under the greatest scrutiny. He was beginning to understand why Aaliyah wasn’t out there making friends and letting that beautiful personality of hers shine. “I appreciate you trusting me with something that important.” He had used the word trust purposely, not only being honest in his statement, but also letting her know, if she didn’t already, that she could learn to trust again. He was proof of that. “I’m sorry for what happened though. You shouldn’t have been struck no matter what.” In his eyes, hitting a woman was inexcusable regardless of the circumstance.
