[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came jaycen still couldn't believe what was going on. this just couldn't be reality. it couldn't be the truth. the world had to make sense, and this certainly did not in any capacity. various scenarios and possibilities had flitted throughout the head boy's mind- maybe he'd been the latest in attacks at the school, or a bludger had hit him in the head during the ravenclaw vs. hufflepuff match, or he was dead and this was hell (in the case of that last possibility, though other than giving raychel a bit of hell jaycen had no idea what he could have done to deserve such an eternal punishment) or a delusion induced by head trauma. maybe he was under the imperius curse. ...was it possible to be cursed in such a way without being aware of it and able to fight it? someone else was controlling his actions. someone else had told him- forced him- to ask raychel to the ball with him. this was someone else's idea of a joke, and a bad one at that.
or, the final option... this was all very real.
that then begged the question that jaycen was in no hurry to answer: why? why on earth would he do this? why would he piss his father off and want to receive the three howlers that had arrived in the last week from his father, furious at jaycen for not taking his goddamned fiance instead of a 'filthy halfblood'? why not take, if he were not taking chun, someone that he knew he would enjoy the evening with like lily or another close friend? by taking raychel he had set this evening on a fast track to disaster, and it hadn't even begun yet. he hadn't wanted to be embarrassed by not having a date to the yule ball as a champion, but it would be far more embarrassing to have himself and raychel get into a fight in the middle of a dance and her storm out on him with all eyes upon them... jayce could envision that event perfectly.
ah, whatever... it was too late to change his decision now. it had been made, half of the potential consequences with his father's anger had been served, and jaycen didn't want to ruin his enjoyment of what might be a good evening by being stuck on the fact that he and raychel didn't exactly have a very good track record when it came to getting along. hopefully, though, this evening could be like their encounter in the prefect's bathroom and the commons area when he had asked her to the ball- normal. well, normal for everyone else. not normal for them, seeing as that would involve yelling...
luckily, as a guy, there wasn't a lot he could do in preparation for the ball. he was ready fairly quickly, with almost an hour left until the ball was to officially begin, and from then on bided his time in his dorm room. he felt so formal in his black tux, jayce was much more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt than in a suit and tie, but he didn't think professor swanepoele would be pleased if he decided to attempt this as a casual event.
with forty-five minutes to the the opening of the ball jaycen set out of the ravenclaw tower, taking his time as he walked to the great hall. the champions were supposed to start off the evening with a dance, which meant that he couldn't be one of the latecomers arriving whenever they wanted throughout the evening, and he might as well wait for raychel until she arrived down by the great hall as much as in the commons room. when he arrived to the area before the great hall it was practically deserted. most guys would think they had better things to do with their time than wait for their dates for a half hour, but as time passed the area began to fill with happy couples waiting for the ball to begin while jayce stood near the staircase, fidgeting slightly (not from nervousness... right?) and waited for raychel to arrive. |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Raychel was sitting crossed legged on her bed, staring at the dress that was laid out on the bed. All the other girls were running about getting their dresses on, doing their hair and makeup, but all Raychel was doing was sitting, and in her underwear at that. A hand ran up her arm, expecting to find her bra strap had fallen from her shoulder, but she found nothing, and then she remembered, her bra was strapless. A heavy sigh escaped her lips, she wanted to hide in the tower for the whole night, she wanted to avoid having to go down to the great hall and put on a happy face whilst she pretended that she and Jaycen were getting on as if they were friends...or worse lovers. Her fingers reached out and touched the sliver decorative brooch on her dress, tracing it for a moment with soft fingers before pulling back. "Idiot," she cursed out loud, and immediately she felt eyes turn her way. "Oh I simply forgot to get a bag to match the dress," she replied cheerfully, hoping that the others would simply turn to finish their own business. It was a small white lie; she had no plans for a bag that night; instead she was calling herself an idiot for agreeing to go with Jaycen.
A couple of girls left the room and she couldn’t help but admire how beautiful they were and wished she was one of them, happily about to greet her date that she liked. Turning back to her dress, she sucked in another deep breath before reaching to grab the soft material of her dress. The silky fabric slid over her skin like a lover's caress as she slipped it on, adjusting it so that it sat perfectly against her body. Would Jaycen even appreciate the dress or would be simply turn the other way and pretend she wasn’t in something so magnificent? She couldn’t help her hands running over the material, she loved the feeling of it against her skin, loved the softness and coolness of the material, she was very much in love with the dress. But just to go down in a dress like she was would not do it justice. Taking out her wand, she pointed it to her hair, mumbling the simple spell she had found. She felt her hair twist, pull and tighten until it settled into the desired style she wanted, topped off with a sparkly silver clip.
The head girl looked at herself in the mirror, spraying perfume, and applying makeup and jewellery by hand, she spend as much time as she could so that she didn’t have to meet him earlier that she had to. Her shoes were next, simple shoes she thought, but why dress the shoes up when the dress was the star? She was as ready as she was ever going to be. She left her wand on her bedside table, there was no need for it that night; if she wanted to hurt Jaycen then her heels proved to be just as good at hurting.
One would have asked why she had gotten so dressed up for someone she hated, but it wasn’t for him, at least that was what she kept telling herself, it was for her house. Her heels clicked loudly against the floor as she exited the common room and made her down the number of stairs towards the great hall, only pausing at the last flight of stairs. Her green eyes peered around, wondering where Jaycen was. It took not even a second after to spot him and her breath caught. How could someone she hated for the past six years, look so tempting, so...so devilishly handsome.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came as more and more people began to file in to the area jaycen started to look around for his date, honestly having no idea of when she would be arriving. she wasn't late or anything, but he'd prefer not to be freaking out over not having a partner three minutes before the first dance was to begin. he didn't fancy grabbing a random girl from the crowd just so that he didn't look like a fool and having to face a jealous boyfriend later or something like that which, with his luck, would be exactly what would happen. still, like said, she wasn't anywhere near late, he didn't need to panic... as that thought crossed his mind a shift of blonde hair caught the corner of his eye and jaycen automatically turned to face it.
woah... was that really raychel? of course on a night like tonight most girls were dressed up far differently than they usually were. their outfits were certainly different, their hair tweaked to give them the perfect look they desired, and so on, but it was still surprising to jaycen that he barely recognized the head girl. he didn't know what he'd been expecting... a girl in sweats and a ponytail? casual? relaxed? he hadn't actually envisioned raychel dressed up like all the other girls, he'd just envisioned, well, raychel. somehow her looking so gorgeous different caught him off guard, and it took him a second to realize that he was actually staring at her. yeah, that wasn't awkward at all.
shifting his eyes away jaycen maneuvered through the people around towards her, going to meet her at the bottom of the stairs. he was aware of a few people looking their way, probably recognizing them because of their status as head students in the school, but ignored the looks. being stared at wasn't much new to him this year, so it was easy to just focus on the beauty girl before him.
"you sure clean up nicely," he found himself commenting with a playful little grin automatically appearing on his lips. he didn't mean to be insulting at all. the comment was one that he would generally give to a closer female friend, teasing them, no harm intended at all... so why had he given it to raychel? she was no close friend that such playful remarks were common with... what if she thought he was making fun of her and decided to slap him for an assumed insult? yeah, that wouldn't be good. he quickly stumbled over his tongue to try to correct his wording. "er, that is, i mean, you look good, raychel. really." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | She could feel the stares of others, the feminine whispers, really was it that much of a shock that she could dress up, become a real life Barbie doll just like every other girl on these types of nights. She wanted to roll her eyes at them, to tell them off for gawking, something that would stop the attention from being upon her, and just when she thought said attention was gone, she realised that the attention was divided between her and Jaycen. Were they trying to wonder why they haven’t killed each other yet, why they haven’t thrown insults at each other like a tennis match. She doubted that they knew they were going together, unless someone had tipped them off and she for one hadn’t told anyone but Izzy. Speaking of her best friend, she wondered how she was going, had she met up with this mystery date that Raychel didn’t particularly like. Oh she didn’t mean that she hated Izzy's date, just the fact that it was a blind date, that they hadn’t seen each other before the night.
Her mind was working on overload again and she really didn’t want to analyse everything that happened tonight. This was a night meant for fun, well as much fun as she could get, she doubted very much that being with Jaycen would be fun. She noticed her date...partner...Jaycen had moved to the bottom of the stairs. Hitching her dress up slightly so she didn’t step on it and make a complete fool of herself; she descended slowly, this was going to be a long night, she could already tell. Her foot soon connected with the flat floor in front of Jaycen. She prayed he didn’t open his mouth and insult her. He did open his mouth though, but what he said was far from an insult, in fact it was more of a compliment which sent a faint blush straight to her cheeks. A sheepish smile appeared on her face, as a result of his smile.
Once more he opened his mouth and ruined the moment somewhat but trying to explain what he had meant. Of course she had known what he had meant when he had first spoken, she wasn’t an idiot. These were the times where a girlfriend would demand their boyfriend to shut up and kiss them and just that thought alone made her nerves triple. "Thanks," she replied, making sure she had control over her voice, "And you, you don't look so bad yourself." Now that wasn’t a lie but it was an understatement. Jaycen looked good enough to eat...she put a stop to that train of thoughts. She was going this for her house, for Ravenclaw, she was doing this so that their male champion didn’t look like a fool without a date. Of course, he could have asked someone from the lower years, but then as she thought that, she pictured a girl having run down the stairs to cling to him...well maybe tripped down the stairs in her rush but still ending up with her arms around him. It was so not Jaycen, she could not picture him with any sort of clingy girl. "Are the other champions and da...partners here yet?" she asked, trying to get a topic that wasn’t revolving around romance or people staring. She glanced around again but couldn’t spot any of them, maybe they were waiting for their dates near the common rooms, or maybe they were already inside.
Why wasn’t her nerves going, why did they seem to increase as the time ticked on? Was it the thought of having to dance with Jaycen or the thought of having to be close to him and touch him that done it. Maybe it was both. She hoped they'd die down after the first dance; she didn’t want to spend the whole night with nerves plaguing her body.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came he felt like a bit of a fool, complimenting her like that... it was just so weird for the two of them to exchange pleasantries like that. would it have seemed more right to make some insult about her hair or shoes or- no, he couldn't happen to find fault with any of that... fact was, however little he wanted to admit it, raychel was drop dead gorgeous this evening and he should be counting himself as a damn lucky guy for snagging her as his dat- partner for the ball today before she agreed to go with some other boy. maybe some of the people watching the first dance, well the males, would hold bits of jealousy for him with a blonde haired beauty at his side... maybe.
"Thanks, and you, you don't look so bad yourself." a bit distracted with his thoughts, jaycen just offered her a slight, quick smile in return. "uh... thanks." okay, he now had a new goal for the evening (besides surviving it, that was). he wanted to actually say something without adding in an awkward 'uh' or 'er' or 'um' between words. it was pathetic that he didn't think he'd managed that so far. people only added in such things when they were nervous, didn't they? and jaycen had zero reason to be remotely nervous. he was just here with raychel. he didn't care what she thought or him. he didn't care about her. ...right?
"Are the other champions and da...partners here yet?" grateful for the distraction from his unsettling thoughts the head boy took a quick glance around, and noticed for the first time that the doors to the great hall had opened wide and the area outside was beginning to thin out as students entered the hall to await the first song. "to be honest i wasn't really paying attention. i'm sure they are, though. the ball's about to begin." and therefore their impending doom first dance was fast approaching. was it too late to pull out of the tournament and the yule ball by default? ...nah, claire would kill him if swanepoele didn't first.
"speaking of which..." he trailed off, turning towards the great hall and instinctively offering her his arm like a 'proper gentleman' would to any woman. damn his upbringing, though if his parents had seen how it had apparently paid off they might be proud (though, no doubt, his father would complain that he was offering his arm to a half-blood and not his fiance whom he wasn't too keen to think about.) "are you ready to go?" |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | She swallowed, so far so good she thought. They were behaving, being nice to each other. Well duh, she thought, of course they had to be nice to each other thanks to their truce, either that or it was go back in insults, which she really didn’t feel like doing. Not after she got to see a better side to him. That side was the most human she had ever seen him be. All because of one night in the prefects bathroom. It was like fate wanted to keep them together, yet there was no plausible reason for doing so. But fate always seemed to through a curved ball and this night was definitely one of them. The only satisfaction she thought she'd get from this night was the look on people's faces during the first dance, and the way the girls would drool over him. Oh yes, given the chance they would most likely do it too, grab him, make those damn annoying eyes at him whilst drooling in awe.
"to be honest I wasn't really paying attention. I’m sure they are, though. The ball's about to begin." Really he didn’t have to remind her on that part, the ball was about to begin, yes she could see that and she was nervous as hell. As much as she didn’t want to do this, she didn’t want to let Ravenclaw down. Its all for Ravenclaw, it’s all for Ravenclaw she chanted in her mind yet she couldn’t help sneak a sideways peek at him. Ok so maybe it was a little for him too but he didn’t have to know that part.
"speaking of which..." She jumped at the sound of his voice. She half expected him to make a remark about her looking at him but a moment later her mind processed what he had actually said. Oh god she was so not ready for this, she took a deep breath and noticed that he had offered her his arm. It was the moment of truth; she had to...touch him. Why oh why hadn’t she worn gloves. Why had she agreed to go with the guy she hated for six years? And then he spoke again, asking if she was ready, as if he read her mind. Could she make a witty comment about skipping the dance and going somewhere else. Heck she'd take talking to him in private any day than having people watch as she danced with him.
She sucked in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she raised her arm, hesitated for a second before taking his. The head girl automatically thought that touching him would have felt so wrong, but oh how wrong her mind was. Her fingers tingled and she wondered if he felt anything. The last time she could recall her ever touching him was slapping him way back in their younger years after an insult match; since then she controlled herself. "Honestly...no," she replied in a small voice as she stared into the great hall for a moment before looking up at him, "Can't back out now though." In her mind it sounded insensitive, but she couldn’t help it, she didn’t want to be stared at whilst dancing the first dance, she didn’t want the whispers that she knew would come; maybe she should have thought things through before agreeing to him. What was done was done though and she couldn’t change it.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came what had he been expecting? her touch to be slimy? her grip wriggling like worms? the fact that her being attached to his arm felt perfectly normal was just... odd. unnerving. but maybe he was just being ridiculous... after all, other than the history between himself and his date- er, partner, there was nothing that set her apart from any other girl his age. of course she wouldn't feel like some space alien to him. he was freaking himself out psychoanalyzing every little thing either he or raychel did. why couldn't he just relax and try to focus on enjoying, or at least surviving, the evening they had ahead of them?
"Honestly...no," surprisingly jayce found himself laughing a little and nodding ever-so-slightly. he knew exactly what she meant, but unfortunately time control was not a bit of magic wizards had mastered. at least, not in their seventh years without a time turner in their possession... so there was nothing to do but push forwards and suffer the torture that was a ball. maybe he'd be lucky... maybe it would pass like history of magic, far quicker than you thought it would because you dreaded it so much. wouldn't that be wonderful? in the blink of an eye he'd be back in his dorm sleeping away whatever awkward or potentially awful memories of the evening he'd created...
"Can't back out now though." true... the time for running was long past. she'd had plenty of time since he'd asked her to the ball to politely, or not so politely, tell him that she had changed her mind and he had had just as much time to tell her that he thought it might be more comfortable for each of them if they found different partners for the dance. jayce felt that he probably should say something to reply, maybe apologize for roping her into this mess or something of the sort, but all he could see to do was nod slowly and look ahead as he started to walk towards the great hall, bringing his partner along with him.
maybe it was just that the crowd was so thick, or maybe time just slowed down, but it seemed to take ages for them to navigate with the rest of the students into the great hall, moving towards the front of the students and couples grouped around the empty dancing area, quietly talking to each other. jayce couldn't see the other champions in the crowd, but knew that they must be there with their dates and friends awaiting the first dance as he was. he really hoped that they weren't left standing near the dance floor awkwardly for another half hour... suddenly he just wanted to get the first dance over with and done so that then, maybe, he would be able to relax a teeny-tiny bit more.
it was like that thought had been the cue for the first chord of music to begin, the sound of student's chatter rising with excitement and then falling to observe the champion's dance. jaycen swallowed, still not sure why he was so freakin' nervous, and turned to raychel with a slightly forced smile to hopefully make himself not look as tense as he felt. "would you, uh... care to dance?"
(ooc: hope you don't mind me kinda speeding it along a bit... ^^) |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Was he laughing at her, she looked up sharply at him, wanting to glare at him when she caught him nodding, almost like he was agreeing with her? It was hard to read him, what was he thinking, did he actually agree with her or did he nod to try and make her feel more at ease, which she felt none of. Why was Jaycen always so hard to read, he was unpredictable, even after all the fighting and the insult matches, she still could not figure him out. It made her more nervous.
And then she felt the tug on her arm as Jaycen moved. Although nervous, she managed to plaster a smile on her face, making sure it looked genuine. Raychel sure as hell didn’t want others to know how nervous she was, nor did she want them to think it was because of the guy she was holding onto. She could feel the stares on the back of her head as they made their way through the crowd. The atmosphere was thick, nothing like the party she imagined it to be. It was stuff as well and hard to breath. She didn’t think she could do this, she felt as if she would faint at any moment, the only thing that would have been holding her up would have been Jaycen. The thought brought a little relief at the irony of it. Jaycen, the guy she hadn’t would help her, would be holding her, well she liked to think that he'd try and catch her if she did faint and although it was a nice thought, she wasn’t very tempted it see if it would come true. The sound of the room buzzed, but she didn’t hear a single word. It was all a jumbled mess of noise. Biting her lip she tried looking around for a familiar face, but couldn’t see anyone. Was this what it was like to have an anxiety attack she wondered.
Jaycen had stopped and so did she. They had finally made it to the dance floor, but the air was still as thick and hot as it was before, in fact she could have swore it had gotten worse. She glanced at Jaycen, wanting to demand that he get her out of there but instead she saw him offer his hand and that was when she heard the first notes of the music. Crap, she thought, it was too late. Offering him a smile and a nod, she accepted his hand and prayed that she made it through the next few minutes.
How had they gotten near the middle of the floor, she could have sworn she had not taken a step in any direction, yet here she was in the middle of the dance floor where everyone was watching the champions and their dates. Taking a breath, she placed her free hand on his shoulder and waited for him to lead.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came how long was this obligated to go on for? jayce knew that he was probably supposed to stick around until the crowd began to noticably thin out to represent his house, but how long was raychel supposed to stay with him? one dance? two? three? an hour? or could she just slip off into the night, maybe to find her best friend isabella, as soon as the opening song was over? it wasn't like he would hold her hostage, or anything, he knew that she probably just agreed to go to the ball with him for the sake of their house and all, so that ravenclaw wouldn't look like a mess in front of the rest of the school, and knew that as soon as she could she'd probably want to leave to find people she was more comfortable spending time around... that was fine with him. he wasn't going to be some controlling bastard and demand she stay with him just because she was his dat- er, partner.
he needed to focus on the present right now, though, like the song swelling as it began sounding throughout the great hall and the way that the chatter of students abruptly shut off, replaced by quiet whispers as the eyes of the student body were drawn to eight (jaycen thought. he didn't have time to actually look around and count.) pairs around the dance floor beginning the evening. trying not to seem as nervous as he felt, jayce placed his hands appropriately as raychel did the same, ignoring the fingers pointing their way (or maybe behind them at other champions) that he could see out of the corner of his eyes. focusing on the people watching would only succeed in making him more nervous, and likely mess up, which would be just, well, way more than embarrassing.
he praised the lord, or rather lily potter, a moment later when his body finally started to move, leading them in a dance much smoother than jaycen had hoped for three months ago. back when he and raychel had had their little meeting in the prefect's bathroom that had somehow snowballed into their dancing together right now, he'd made mention of dancing and how he'd never done so before... and then shortly after he'd gone to lily for help. of course the little potter had been elated to help him out, teasing him all the way of how he owed her, and jaycen was now of the same mind. he knew he'd be tripping over his feet right now if not for the red haired gryffindor.
it was incredibly awkward to look away from raychel seeing as they were facing each other, dancing, but it was somehow even more awkward to look at her, but he couldn't just dance looking off into the distance... so he forced his eyes back to her, giving her a nervous and small, but genuine, smile. "thanks for doing this, raychel. really." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | She scolded herself for looking around, trying to catch those that where whispering. She set her eyes straight ahead, which meant she had forced herself to look at Jaycen, but he was the lesser of the two evils, right? Nervous just seemed so much like an understatement. Who would have thought that she would be dancing with Jaycen, actually who would have thought she would have had a nice, decent, insult free conversation with him. Well the latter had already happened and the former was happening. Did the headmaster purposely chosen them as the heads in hopes for this result? Surely Professor Kingsley would not have known, nor could have known that the outcome of making them the head students would be this. Perhaps he was just wanting them to get along.
The way he moved did not describe that he was not able to dance. Oh she remembered the conversation they had clearly in the bathroom and where he told her he couldn’t dance. She wanted to tell him that he was a liar but perhaps at that moment in time he had been correct, perhaps he had gotten dance lessons off someone. There was no need to guide or correct him in any of the steps, it was as if he were a born natural at dancing. Maybe he had put a spell on his own feet...no he would have most likely ended up dancing into the great hall before any music started. That was a humorous imagine she conjured up in her mind, him dancing wildly. She didn’t dare make a face or laugh at him, at least not while people were watching. Would he find it funny as well, she wondered.
Dancing with Jaycen felt...comfortable, easy, and as if they had been doing it for years already. Where was the awkwardness of it all, where was the bumping of each other, the stepping on toes, there was none of it. One would could have said they fitted together. And that smile, although she detected the nervousness though it, it was one that she was sure would make most girls melt, and yes she would have been one of those girls. Was she falling for him...no she couldn’t be, that just wasn’t possible. She returned a smile, making it appear as if she were having a good time, although that wasn’t so hard to fake, for she wouldn’t have been lying. She was having a good time and she was thoroughly impressed by him.
"thanks for doing this, Raychel. really." Even his voice didn’t ruin the mood, maybe someone had cast a spell over them, to make this seem all the more magical. "Its fine really," she spoke, her eyes meeting with his, "I’m having a great time." her voice was full of honesty, yes she was having the time of her life and with Jaycen of all people.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came it was rather surprising how easy it was to relax. then again, it was impossible to relax. everyone around them seemed to have kind of melted away, background white noise of the evening. it was easy for jaycen to shove them aside and ignore them. he hadn't really expected anything else everyone was likely talking about the champions and their dates... it was good gossip in a school like hogwarts. and while he didn't exactly like all of the eyes upon him and his date- er... dancing partner, it was surprisingly easy to shove unease about that aside. it was harder to relax about dancing with raychel, though. this wasn't bad at all, no, surprisingly easy, in fact. apparently his dance lessons with lily had really paid off and he hadn't made a fool of himself yet. he and raychel worked well together, gliding smoothly through the steps... all awkwardness between them at least didn't involve the dance, which was something right?
"Its fine really, I'm having a great time." she was just being nice. there were likely a million places throughout the castle, a billion throughout the world, where the head girl would rather be at this point in time. probably at least one of them included a guy that was not named jaycen tate, not that the ravenclaw champion really cared or anything about what boy the blonde might fancy... he had no reason to care. though, once the thought was put in place, he had to wonder... with how little he associated with raychel outside of prefect duties he had never noticed her hanging out with another guy, nor had he ever caught any indication that she might like someone, but he still had to wonder if there was a guy she wished she were spending the evening with instead... mentally he shook his head at himself. it was not his place to wonder who she cared about. if she wanted, she could always go seek them out after this dance. it shouldn't matter to him.
"i know this couldn't have been your first choice of how to spend the evening... but i'm glad you at least don't seem to consider it a torture." he flashed her a small grin again, trying to loosen up through the conversation and relax further. he didn't even know why he was so nervous and on edge... it wasn't like he should care of what raychel thought of him right now. they'd never gotten along through all their years of schooling, well, except for more recently... anyways, the point was that if through six and a half years of putting up with eachother jaycen didn't once care of what the beautiful girl thought of him, why should he suddenly start now? |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | She thought Jaycen would simply drop it, accept that she was here with him and not push the subject further. She should have known better. Jaycen was never the type to be completely satisfied with a simple answer, at least not from what she had observed over the past 6 years. So why did she expect different from him. Maybe it was because they had turned over a new leaf, because they were actually getting along. She wondered just how much pretence had become reality in their truce, she wondered why it stirred up different emotions. It wasnt like the whole truce was written on paper and as far as everyone else was concerned, nothing had happened between them, there was no evidence to suggest it, besides this night. But then people could assume they were only together because of their house or because they felt duty bound. In the beginning, it was just that for her, duty and for her house, but now she wasnt so sure.
"I know this couldn't have been your first choice of how to spend the evening... but i'm glad you at least don't seem to consider it a torture." his voice floated in her ears, above the music. Did he really think that, that she would consider this torture. She was in half a mind to step back and slap him across the face for even thinking of such things. The old Raychel would have done it, would have been joyous at the fact she would have embarrassed him in front of the whole school, but the new Raychel stayed put, fought the urge to slap him.
"Really Jaycen torture?" she asked, raising her eyes to look up at him, trying not to enjoy the way his name rolled off her tongue but failed miserably, "If I considered this torture, do you honestly think i'd still be here?" she asked, trying to keep her tone low enough just for him to hear, the hint of amusement was evident in her voice. "If I thought that I would have said no," she added, giggling a little. Funny enough though, that thought had crossed her mind the days prior to the ball. She had wondered why she had said yes in the first place and wondered why Jaycen or all people had asked her. She had thought it was just another one of his ploys to humiliate her, but dancing with him was nothing to what she had originally thought. Surely if they wanted to embarrass each other, they would have done it by now, with the whole school watching. Apart from the torture comment he had made, there was nothing that made her want to torture him.
This was how they should have been since their first year, polite, friendly and peaceful, not the insults and fighting they subjected each other to. "I do admit though, it wasnt my first choice, nor the second. My first choice would have been to avoid the whole ball, the second I had to come to make sure that Izzy was fine with her blind date, I never expected to be going with anyone myself but... thank you," why the hell did she just blurt that out, why couldnt she just have kept it to herself. And what was with the thank you, she couldnt remember a time where she had thanked him, not once.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came how far into the song were they? it seemed rather endless, but at the same time... not. floating around the dance floor with his long-time enemy was far more natural and easy than he'd ever imagined it could be. even in practice with lily he had stumbled awkwardly, there had been unnatural hesitations, and missteps... but jayce hadn't been able to find a single error in his movements with raychel so far. this dance was almost flawless, and surprisingly he wasn't having to concentrate one hundred percent completely to make it so. he was able to joke around with her, take part in a conversation, notice things other than where his feet were being placed... it was nice.
one thing that he noticed, for the first time ever, was the head girl's eyes. beautiful murky green, almost light brown in the middle, much more interesting than jaycen's eye color: brown. there wasn't much to be said about brown eyes... they were plain. dull. dark. luckily jaycen was not in the practice of swooning over his own eyes in a mirror- ...for that matter he was, and would never, get into the practice of melting at the sight of raychel's eyes, either, or anything about her.
"Really Jaycen torture?" he hadn't meant literally torture, more the loose definition of it that teenagers often used to describe homework... basically 'it sucks, it's not fun, i don't want to do it', but he felt that raychel probably understood where he was coming from and hadn't taken him literally, she was just giving him a hard time of it. "If I considered this torture, do you honestly think i'd still be here?" with the swell of the music around them likely no one would be able to hear them, unless they had some sort of super hearing or something of the course (which, with a few werewolf children in the school seyton could not rule out), but he wouldn't mind others hearing it just so that he could marvel with them that, hey, he and the head girl were actually getting along! "you never know... you might be some sort of masochist," he suggested with a smirk. "If I thought that I would have said no," of course she would have... but then again, he felt like he'd caught her off guard just as much as he'd caught himself off guard when he'd asked her to be his date, so maybe that wasn't the truth.
"I do admit though, it wasnt my first choice, nor the second. My first choice would have been to avoid the whole ball, the second I had to come to make sure that Izzy was fine with her blind date, I never expected to be going with anyone myself but... thank you," he couldn't blame her for any of that. who wouldn't rather be with their best friend instead of the person they hated? he himself would be here with molly or layla if one of them hadn't had a date. "i don't blame you. i admit it was kind of impulsive, asking you, but it's worked out well. definitely better than coming with chun." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Raychel didnt know how the other champions and their dates were doing, in fact all she could see out of the corner of her eyes was a blur, like the world was melting into one. All she could hear as the music and him. His breathing, his words. She could feel his warmth as well, it was comforting...no it was more than comforting. And she felt safe. Ha that was funny she thought, she felt safe in the arms of her enemy. It was the type of warmth and safety that you didnt want to stray from, that you could be forever content with it. Why was she thinking like this all of a sudden? It had to be the music, yea that was the most logical explanation she could think of, the music was a spell.
But if this was a spell or even a dream, she didnt want it to end.
"you never know... you might be some sort of masochist," She couldnt help it, she burst out in a fit of laughter. She wasnt trying to be rude, but the way he said it was just hilarious. She was not some sick person that got off from punishment. There were far better ways than that. Had Jaycen always been this funny, she wondered. Did his friends always find themselves laughing at something he said, whether or not it was meant to sound hilarious? At this point she actually envied his friends. They could laugh and joke with him whenever they wanted. That didnt mean to say that her own friends didnt crack her up, they certainly did, but Jaycen's humour was different, refreshing to say the least.
The song seemed to carry on forever, but she didnt mind one bit, she was having a good time, a decent conversation and she had no urge to kill him. What would Izzy say about them? She couldnt even conjure up a response to that.
"I don't blame you. I admit it was kind of impulsive, asking you, but it's worked out well. definitely better than coming with chun." If felt as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice cold water over her head. The people in the room were becoming clearly and her mind begun working overtime. What did he mean by that, definitely better than coming with Chun. Oh she knew of the girl, a Slytherin and apparently not a nice one at that. So what did a spiteful Slytherin girl have to do with Jaycen, why did he bring her up. Why did she care so much that there could possibly be another girl. It wasnt like they were dating and besides his two best friends were female, but the way he had said Chun's name, she knew there was more to it. Her first reaction was to stop, demand who she was and then leave him on the dance floor like some heartbroken girlfriend. But she wasnt his, nor was he hers. They were just being friendly right. "Why?" she found herself asking, her voice small as she tore her eyes from him and looked everywhere but his handsome face, "What's Chun got to do with this?"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came there could be hell to pay after tonight. jaycen was preparing for it, expecting it so that he wouldn't be off guard then the howler arrived in the morning male tomorrow, or perhaps the day after. 'hello son, merry christmas, what the fuck were you thinking bringing a halfblood to a ball?', but much more strongly worded, much angrier, and probably without the beginning greeting. actually, definitely without the greeting. jaycen's father hadn't been polite enough for greetings towards his son for quite some time not, he preferred to be blunt and to the point when trying to control the seventeen year old's life. how exactly he always seemed to find out what went on in jaycen's life was beyond the seventh year, but he did. anything that jaycen did that might displease his dear old dad was addressed in a howler within the next week without fail. gotta love having a powerful, well connected father.
was this worth his father's fury? jaycen might have surprised the person he'd been at the beginning of the year by immediately responding with 'yes'. he was having a good time, actually a great time. he was enjoying himself, and more relaxed than he would have ever been with his fiance. time spent with her would have been awkward silences, wary glances, and more than likely chat chat about the weather. at least with raychel there was a level or normalcy. screw every argument his father might be able to come up with... tonight was about having fun, not stone aged ideas of blood purism and betrothals.
"Why?" the tone of her voice instantly caught his attention. had he done something wrong? said the wrong thing? ignored something? "What's Chun got to do with this?" oh... he'd mentioned her. great... now how to explain this? almost no one, on his side of things at least, knew of the betrothal between himself and the slytherin seventh year. he'd made a point to keep things quiet since he was determined the arrangements would not last, anyway. only molly and layla were aware of the future his father intended for him, and it had taken him a long time to gather the courage to tell them... but he could think of no suitable lie to tell to raychel. here went nothing. "my... my parents are old fashioned, in many ways, and my father's an ass." he hesitated for a good beat, then confessed with a sigh, "chun is my fiance. an arranged marriage." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | "chun is my fiance. an arranged marriage." She could hear nothing but those seven words. Chun was his fiancee, why didnt she piece it together sooner when he first mentioned her. She was stupid, she was the one being played yet again. This time she did stop dancing and removed her hands from him. "Sorry," she spoke as she grabbed the front of her skirts so she didnt trip as she moved from the dance floor, pushing past the group of people and out of the great hall, straight to the nearest bathroom.
Why was she acting like this, she shouldnt care whether or not he was engaged, but then shouldnt he have taken his fiancee, after all they were going to be spending their lives together, why not get to know one another better before being committed officially? She stared at her own reflection in the mirror, glad that no one else was in here at the time. Was she just the constellation prize, the lesser of the two evils, was that what he thought? Sighing she debated on whether or not she ought to go back into that ball. At least in here she was able to think, go through everything in her mind that had happened. Would he have sought out Chun already, would the slytherin have taken over the champion's dance in her place, not that she cared right, he could do whatever he wanted, except humiliate her like that. Merlin she bet the whole school knew of his predicament, she had been a complete idiot. Biting her lip, she let another sigh out. But they were finally getting along, would something like this destroy any hope of them remaining friendly. Merlin why was this so hard. She heard a noise outside the bathroom, the chattering of girls and she quickly turned the tap on and made it seem like and had indeed just used the toilet and was washing her hands afterwards.
Ten minutes, that was how long she was in the bathroom for before she emerged, having decided what to do. She had a duty to Ravenclaw, that was all. Squaring her shoulders, she raised her head high like nothing happened and entered the great hall again, heads turning towards her, probably trying to see if her face was red from crying. Well tough she thought, she had not shed a single tear, and why should she for someone that was supposed to be her enemy. She smiled at those that looked whilst she glanced around the room, looking for Jaycen. What would he think of her running out on him, she wondered. But she wasnt meant to care what he thought right? She couldnt see him, maybe he had gone back up to the ravenclaw tower. She tried looking for Chun and couldnt see her, she could have sworn the girl was here, maybe it was her imagination or maybe they had left together. At least she still had Izzy around, but she couldnt even find her best friend within the crowd of people.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came of all of the possible reactions for raychel to give at his confession... that had been the last. to be honest, he'd more expecting raychel to laugh. after six years of finding every opportunity to make each other's lives hell, to taunt each other on every fault and flaw of their life or personality, wouldn't the fact that he was being forced into a marriage be a source of amusement for her? he had been expecting for her to, maybe not taunt him about it seeing they had a pretty steady truce going on at the moment, but at least make some sort of smug remark about it... he was waiting for that, practically, ready to mouth the words along with her, but it never came. as he watched there seemed to come a change over his date. her eyes became more guarded, trying to hide some emotion he couldn't quite pinpoint, and she abruptly dropped her hands away from him, leaving him standing there awkwardly in the middle of the dance floor. "Sorry." before the head boy could react she was gone, gathering up the beautiful dress she wore and hurrying away from the dance floor.
and jaycen was left there, completely dumbfounded.
he could feel all eyes on him, the raised volume of the whispers in the room at the latest scandalous piece of gossip to hit the school. "raychel!" he called after her, starting to follow and abandoning the sacred first dance of the tournament, but his voice was drowned out by the music. 'ravenclaw champion abandoned by date', the headline could read, and he still had no freaking idea what he had done wrong! there was nothing going on between him and raychel... right? but suddenly he wasn't so sure... her reaction had been strangely like a girl who'd just discovered she was 'the other woman', but that wasn't it at all... even if there was something going on between himself and raychel deeper than just a truce (which there wasn't) chun meant even less to him than the fellow ravenclaw did. he was determined not to spend the rest of his life with the slytherin girl, just because his father said they were to be together didn't mean jaycen was going to allow that to happen.
by the time he reached the doors to the great hall, the entranceway, she was gone. there were masses of other students in dresses and tuxes milling about, but try as he might jaycen couldn't spot the blonde seventh year among them. he stood in the entrance to the great hall for a moment, looking over the heads of those around him for her, before he gave up and returned inside. shit... somehow this evening was terrible, he couldn't wait for it to be over.
he didn't know what to do now. the first dance came to a close as he reentered the great hall, and the happy couples around him moved to finally take their places on the dance floor. ignoring the gazes on him, the fingers pointed his way, jaycen retreated to the back wall on one side of the great doors, next to a lavishly decorated christmas tree, and leaned against it. shit... was he allowed to leave now? he didn't know what else to do... he remained against the wall for the entire next song, though, and then through the beginning of the next, unable to find the energy to make his legs carry him back to the ravenclaw tower. then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the stunning royal blue coloring of her dress appear in the great hall, a few metres away from him. straightening away from the wall without even meaning to do so jaycen found himself walking over to her, moving around the couples and friends in between them. he ended up behind her as she faced the opposite direction, looking for someone. probably, in all honesty, isabella to tell her friend she was going back to the ravenclaw tower. "raychel, are... are you okay?" |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Merlin did everyone have nothing better to do than stare at a girl. Ok yes she had run out on the most important dance of the night, but could anyone blame her. Finding her date...partner had a fiancée and wasnt with her was something that not everyone could handle very well, and obviously she was one of those people. Even her actions confused the hell out of her. She had run from him like she was his. But she wasnt, she kept telling herself that. Perhaps she thought they did belong to each other slightly because of the truce, because they were finally being friendly. She was being stupid of course, but it still didnt explain why she had run.
If only she had her wand with her, she'd hex everyone that stared at her, she was not in the mood to put up with them. Maybe she ought to turn around and head back out the doors and up to the Ravenclaw tower. It was clear that their night was over. Both were at fault, although she figured it was more so hers for running out on him. If only she had stayed and talked to him about it, Merlin she had no idea how he even felt about his arranged marriage, she knew if she were in his shoes, she'd want to try and get out of it anyway she could, no matter whether she liked the person on not. People were free to marry whomever they wanted and loved, not someone they were forced to and didnt love. She had acted rash.
"Raychel, are... are you okay?" She heard his voice from behind her and she turned, losing her balance. She reached out to steady herself, finding she had grabbed hold of his arm. Stupid heels, she cursed them silently. Looking up at her partner she wondered why he was still here. Her eyes lowered to her hand, the one holding onto him. She could feel something, like a spark. It had to be static electricity, nothing else that she could think of explained such a feeling in her hand. Her eyes travelled up until the rested on his face. It hurt to look at him, with what had just happened. "I'm fine," she replied, "I'm... I'm sorry about before." She didnt know how to explain it and hoped he didnt pry into it, for she still didnt understand herself. For years her mind had considered him an enemy but she hadnt been thinking with her mind, was her own damn heart trying to betray her now?

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came he saw her stumble as she turned, and instinctively reached out with one arm to grab her around the waist and grab her arm,to steady her. as he was she grabbed his arm, first, but his hand that had been going for her waist reached its mark, holding her in place as she regained her balance. once he realized where it was he dropped it like a hot iron, though he wasn't certain why, later. after all, they'd just been dancing together, it wasn't any different...but it was the principle of the thing. contact on the dance floor had been required, this had not, and so he should not touch her at all whatsoever.
"I'm fine, I'm... I'm sorry about before." he could be an asshole... question and taunt her about what other people in the room might be gossiping about at that very minute. though they wouldn't know the specifics of what happened teenagers were often good at getting gossip close to the truth.at that very moment a giggly group of fifth year girls were probably joking that raychel had discovered jaycen was cheating on her, not realizing how close to the mark their little gossip session was hitting. "you don't need to apologize. i hated that song anyway." he surprised even himself by cracking the pathetic little joke, but he couldn't help himself. he just wanted to see her smile when he was the reason she had fled in the first place.
he looked around the great hall, setting his gaze on the small tables pushed against the wall where they could get some drinks if they wanted, just by simply sitting down and saying the name of whatever drink they desired. "would you like to sit down for a bit?" he questioned, then beginning to lead her over to one of the tables near the wall, away from the tables closer to the dance floor that were occupied. they were small little two person tables in the area he'd moved to, two chairs to a table. instinctively jaycen pulled out raychel's for her, letting her sit before he went to do so himself. not many couples were sitting down yet, probably taking advantage of the first few public dances, but that was fine with jaycen. once people started to tire of the dances the table area would get crowded, and he liked it with just himself and raychel. what the hell is that supposed to mean? |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | She hadnt realised he had made a grab for her until she felt his hand on her waist, it seemed so natural there. Ugh what the hell, she thought, scolding herself silently, this was an engaged man that was simply helping her, there was nothing to it, nothing in his touch other than that of safety. To prove her point that there wasnt nothing going on between them,. Jaycen had dropped his hand quickly as she done the same. There was absolutely nothing there, she had been overreacting earlier. So why wouldnt her heart stop trying to jump out of her chest. Ok sure he had startled her but her heart shouldnt be racing so fast. Stupid damn organ, she wanted to reach into her own chest and pull it out, if only she didnt need it to live.
The Ravenclaw was expected him to bombard her with questions, taunts and everything and anything else he could throw at her. She had made them both look like a fool on the dance floor. Of course she had a right to apologise.
"you don't need to apologize. I hated that song anyway." She chuckled, a smile appearing on her face. Everything that had just happened was forgotten about. She was grateful to Jaycen for not prying into it further, maybe they did know each other better than they thought. "I wouldnt let her hear that," she replied, inclining her head towards the singer that had been hired for the night, "She looks like she could eat you and anyone else that doesnt like her song up, literally."
"would you like to sit down for a bit?" That was perhaps the best idea they had so far that night and she was a bit parched. She nodded, allowing him to lead the way through the crowd. She expected him to lead her to one of the tables closest to the dance floor, so they could make excuses to leave and dance with other people but no, instead he lead her to the tables further away from the dance floor, the ones that seated only two. Why'd he lead her to these ones, did he not know that it would be more intimate here. She didnt question him, perhaps he just didnt want to sit with other people yet. And now he was being a gentleman, was there anything Jaycen couldnt do: Beater, head boy, champion, fiancé and now gentleman. She had never seen this side to him and she quiet liked it. "Thanks," she smiled at him as she took her seat. She could hear the buzz of the dancers and although they were still in the same room, the music seemed a bit dull, a spell perhaps, so that people could talk to one another without yelling. "You don't have to stay with me if you don't want to, i'm sure Molly and Layla are wanting to dance with you," it wasnt that she was trying to brush him off, merely saying that he didnt have to stay because she was his date. But at that thought, a pang of jealousy sprouted within, was she jealous of his best friends? She had no reason for. "Butterbeer please," she called out and a second later the glass appeared. She took a sip of it, looking at Jaycen over the rim of the glass, perhaps their night wasnt as ruined as she thought.
