[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came "I wouldnt let her hear that, She looks like she could eat you and anyone else that doesnt like her song up, literally." "maybe she's a part of the next task," he found himself joking, a crooked grin on his lips as he regarded the musician of the evening. if only the tasks were truly so simple... the first one had been all right, but he knew better than to expect every task to play to his strengths as much as flying and physical activities did.
jaycen was glad that she did end up following him, that she didn't decide 'to hell with him' and turn the other way to disappear into the crowd and find her friend or a guy she would actually enjoy the evening with. even if she'd taken that course of action it shouldn't matter to him, but he couldn't explain the happiness he found in that she actually stuck around, following him to a quieter area where they could sit down. a benefit of the table they were at was that most people would have to turn completely around to gawk at them, and even teenagers seemed to have more courtesy than to do something so obvious just to get a glimpse at the latest potential gossip. he took his seat across from her, leaning back in it as much as he could, and ran a hand through his hair. this evening wasn't turning out as terrible as expected.
"You don't have to stay with me if you don't want to, i'm sure Molly and Layla are wanting to dance with you," he shook his head with a shrug. "we're not attached at the hips. 'sides, they've got their own dates for the night, and i've got you." he didn't even notice how easily the word 'date' flowed off of his tongue, which was good, because if he'd noticed himself using such a word he would have been reduced to a stammering mess to correct himself. "it's only a few dances in, they can survive hours more without me."
he watched her order a drink but didn't do the same himself. nervousness had made him parched a few minutes ago, but strangely now he was much more relaxed, though he did happen to replay her running off from him on the dance floor a few times. "i should have been the one apologizing," he sighed, not even sure if his words would make sense to her at first. the odds of her mind being on the same thing his was was unlikely. "i shouldn't have mentioned chun... or at least have told you about her before i asked you to the ball." not necessarily because it would make her feel like the 'other woman', he wasn't thinking along those lines at all. he just figured that she must be embarrassed, maybe thinking that many more knew about his engagement than jaycen was aware of and that she would be the subject of ridicule by people for going to the ball with an engaged guy. "if it helps at all, barely anyone knows about her and i. it's not something i'd like spread around." would she realize that that was his indirect way of asking for her to keep it quiet? if their truce broke she'd certainly have leverage over him now.

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | maybe she's a part of the next task," Raychel looked back at the woman. She was beautiful she'd give her that, but she had a dark presence around her and really hoped that it was just Jaycen's sense of humour. She did not want that woman anywhere near Jaycen...ok she did not just think that, but still she doubted his best friends would allow the dark looking woman anywhere near him either. Speaking of tasks, she wondered how he was truly coping with everything they were throwing at him? Ravenclaw had gotten third in the first task, not exactly the first they had hoped for, but they did beat Gryffindor. Still she could imagine if she were his partner instead of Claire, they would never have finished the first task, they'd probably argue all the way, fight one another instead of fighting with one another. It was indeed a good thing that they were paired together. But then it could have gone the other way. They were on the quidditch team together and hadnt tried to kill one another, in fact she remembered the last match they had against Hufflepuff, he had tried to defend her and although he hadnt gotten to the bludger, he had alerted her to it, therefore helping her out. So yes they were capable of working well together.
The head girl didnt think he would reply, but he did, whether he was trying to be polite or not, she wasnt too sure.
"we're not attached at the hips. 'sides, they've got their own dates for the night, and i've got you." I've got you, those three words were floating in her brain. But he didnt have her, he was engaged to another, she was only his for the night. Again where the hell did that come from. She was definitely not his, how many times did she have to tell herself that. She nodded, of course they could, but it was always nice to dance with friends for a couple of dances, maybe they were simply too shocked to approach them at the moment, she didnt blame them. In fact no one had approached them, not before, during or after the champion's dance. She knew they were most likely going to be the talk of the school for at least the next week until things died down after finding nothing had come from this night besides showing that they were getting along with each other.
Silence fell between them as she sipped on her drink, not questioning why he wasnt drinking. Surely he wasnt nervous or anything. He spoke again, this time he was apologising. Him, apologising, it was different but nice to hear those words coming from him, he was human after all.
I shouldn't have mentioned chun... or at least have told you about her before I asked you to the ball It probably wouldnt have made any difference, although she could have asked why he wasnt going with her before the night, before causing a scene.
"if it helps at all, barely anyone knows about her and I. it's not something i'd like spread around." Oh so she had definitely been acting like a foolish person, she had thought she had been humiliated, but to know that not many did know was...well it was a relief. "So how come you arent here with her?" she asked, "If you're to spend your whole life with her, wouldnt you want to get to know her better before the actual wedding?"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came he didn’t know why he felt like he had some need to explain himself to raychel. when he’d asked her to the ball it had been clear to each of them (at least, clear other than exactly why he’d chosen to invite her into such a situation) that he asked because neither of them had a date and needed one… right? he was pretty sure that he’d made some mention of it being good for their house with the two head ravenclaw students going together, that it would make sense to the rest of the school… nowhere had there been any implied obligation to each other through it, right? so why did he feel so bad that he’d sort of sprung chun on her, when he had no reason to worry? she hadn’t been as embarrassed as she probably thought she was because no one else knew about chun… problem solved, right?
"so how come you aren’t here with her? If you're to spend your whole life with her, wouldn’t you want to get to know her better before the actual wedding?" many things in those simple questions made the head boy visibly flinch. not because he was the stereotypical teenage boy and the idea of marriage and spending his life with one person appalled him, no, he’d kind of been forced to at least realize that when his dad had pushed the engagement on him, but because of the idea of it with chun… the girl was perfectly pleasant to him. maybe in different circumstances they would have been pretty good friends, but he was not going to marry her. the idea of life at the side of the slytherin girl where no real love existed, nor would ever exist, was like hell to the head boy.
”i…” how could he explain? opening up to raychel seemed so weird when she would probably have, in the past, taken this information to torment him with in their little spats, but he couldn’t really answer the questions without letting her know at least a little bit of what went on in his brain. ”i don’t know a hell of a lot of what my life is going to be like in ten years, but i do know that i will not be calling her my wife. my dad can deal with the disappointment, like he says he’s dealt with so many about me already, but i refuse to be forced into a marriage with someone i don’t care about.” he was revealing a bit more than he wanted to reveal, but found it hard to stop once he got going. ”i just… i need to find the right opportunity,” and the courage, ”to find a way to back out and say ‘screw it’ to my dad’s plans to keep me in control and keep our bloodline pure. i’m not entering into a loveless marriage.”

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | For a moment, Raychel didnt think he was going to answer. It would have been fine if he didnt. After all she had no right to ask my personal questions like she had. They weren't friends but they werent exactly enemies. So what where they, they knew each other well enough to be past acquaintances as well. But still she felt like she had no right asked. It was his life, his choice on how to live it and who he spent time with. The head girl sat back, placing the half empty mug of butterbeer on the table as she looked out towards the dancing floor, figuring that Jaycen's silence meant he didnt want to answer.
”I…” The Ravenclaw turned her head back to Jaycen. It wasnt like him t stumble over words, perhaps he was trying to answer her question after all and had no idea how to say it. She sat there quietly, waiting to hear what Jaycen said next.
”I don’t know a hell of a lot of what my life is going to be like in ten years, but I do know that I will not be calling her my wife. my dad can deal with the disappointment, like he says he’s dealt with so many about me already, but I refuse to be forced into a marriage with someone I don’t care about.” He seemed very adamant that the marriage was not going to go ahead, that he would be Chun free. Fair enough, she would have been doing the same if she were in his shoes, trying to get out of a loveless arranged marriage. But what intrigued her was the fact he spoke about his father and how he had dealt with so many disappointments from Jaycen already. What were these said disappointments exactly, besides the wanting to get out of the marriage. She could think of nothing, at least there was no disappointment at school for him. What more could his old man want. His son was in Ravenclaw, he was a beater, the head boy and a champion for his house, that was not disappointment but achievements. Somehow she could not imagine him acting any differently when he was at home.
"I just… I need to find the right opportunity, to find a way to back out and say ‘screw it’ to my dad’s plans to keep me in control and keep our bloodline pure. I’m not entering into a loveless marriage." He continued before she had the chance to speak. This was more than what she had bargained for and she realised that if ever their truce broke, she had something over him, but would she use it now that she knew this side of him? "Your father is wrong, dead wrong," she replied, finally finding a moment to speak herself. She turned towards him and leaned forward, "There is nothing about you that screams disappointment, he's a fool not to be proud of you and as for the marriage, again he's a fool. Wanting to keep the line pure, doesnt he realise that thought disappeared when the second war ended?" She was angry at his father and if she ever dared met the man; she'd definitely want to put him in his place. She sat back again and looked in him the eye. "I'm sorry that he's put you through all of that, he doesnt deserve to have a son like you. If it had been me, I would have either run away or done something I would probably regret," such as getting sent to Azkaban to get away from it all, or she would have taken the easy way out by jumping off a steep cliff or something. But for him to still remain as he was and to put up with his father, it took guts. Not only did she have a whole new prospect for him, but she also admired him.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came this was weird... the things he was telling her, well, they were things he hadn't told anyone. not even molly and layla. they knew his opinions on the marriage, they knew his opinions on chun, but he was always blunt about things with them. factual. this wasn't as though he was just relaying facts to raychel, he was giving her more, practically opening up his mind for her prodding. raychel entwhistle, of all bloody people. this was... wrong. he shouldn't be so comfortable talking to her. he should be able to restrain his rants, keep his thoughts quiet... who cared if she'd been embarrassed learning that he had a fiance? he shouldn't be practically spilling his guts to her when she had better things to worry about. and once the night was over, when he next pissed her off, the blonde now had a world full of weapons to throw at him or spread around the school just to hit him as hard as possible. this had been a stupid, impulsive move. stupid, stupid, stupid!
but then, there she went and surprised him. she'd been doing that a lot in their last few private encounters. "your father is wrong, dead wrong," his eyes widened in surprise. that had been one of the last things he'd been expecting her to say. actually, he had no clue what he had been expecting her to say, so maybe that statement was wrong, but it was like she was defending him, and that in itself was completely odd. "there is nothing about you that screams disappointment, he's a fool not to be proud of you and as for the marriage, again he's a fool. wanting to keep the line pure, doesnt he realise that thought disappeared when the second war ended?" jaycen found his mouth curving in a small smile simply at the impossibility of this... she was defending him. "he does... a fact that greatly distresses him. i've heard his rants on it plenty of times." he lifted a hand to rub the back of his neck, a nervous habit of his. "i'm the last tate of the bloodline. i don't have any pureblood cousins, my parents can't have any more kids... with me it'll all end if i don't marry a pureblood, and that's something my father can't stand thinking of happening. he was a slytherin for a reason. too prideful. too stubborn... luckily only some of his traits passed on to me."
"i'm sorry that he's put you through all of that, he doesnt deserve to have a son like you. if it had been me, i would have either run away or done something i would probably regret," "he doesn't think he deserves a son like me, either," the head boy muttered bitterly before he could stop himself, but the words were muttered so quietly that he wasn't sure raychel heard him. he hoped she hadn't. he didn't need to give her more leverage, even though she was, well... being kind right now. supportive. friendly. the type of person he could talk to any day, and clearly very easily, too. "he's my dad. he and my mom are all i have... i want to make them happy, but this marriage is one thing i refuse to follow along with." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Did she pity the Ravenclaw that sat opposite her? In a way she did a little. She believed he had the perfect life, the perfect family and as all out perfect in everything he done, but of course that thought would have remained the same had she not spoken to him like she was. If she didnt have the information he was giving her, she'd delude herself into thinking that Jaycen Tate thought he was perfect. But to know what she did, she wished she never had thought that. She wished she could use a time turner and go back to the first year on the train where they became rivals. If only she had stayed and spoken to him things could be different. If only she hadnt left then perhaps they could have ended as friends or at least acquaintances, none of the insults, name calling or teasing would be called for. Jaycen's family was just as screwed up as everyone else’s.
She caught the look in his eyes. She had managed to surprise him. If they werent talking so seriously she probably would have laughed and joked about his expression. Not to insult but to get him to have fun. Perhaps she hadnt needed to joke when she saw him smile. What exactly was he thinking, was he happy that someone else agreed with him or was it the fact she could have possibly said something wrong?
"he does... a fact that greatly distresses him. i've heard his rants on it plenty of times." Once more she felt pity, how many times had his father carried on about it all, how many times was Jaycen forced to sit down and listen to every single word his old man spoke? Jaycen nor anyone deserved that.
"i'm the last Tate of the bloodline. I don't have any pureblood cousins, my parents can't have any more kids... with me it'll all end if I don't marry a pureblood, and that's something my father can't stand thinking of happening. he was a Slytherin for a reason. too prideful. too stubborn... luckily only some of his traits passed on to me." He carried on, explaining about his family. He was the last Tate but at least he still could carry the Tate name. She and her younger sister were the end of the Entwhistle family, once both were married and their parents died, the Entwhistle name would no longer be on this earth. Still she was able to marry whomever she wished and if she didnt want to marry then she was free to do so, but having someone say you were engaged to keep the line pure was something she did not wish for Jaycen. He should be allowed to marry who he wants when he wants regardless of what his parents...his father wanted.
His father was a Slytherin; perhaps it was the Slytherin in Jaycen that she had picked up on the first train ride. No that shouldnt make any difference, after all her younger sister's a Slytherin. But she had to agree he was stubborn and just a little prideful. The head girl heard him mumble something else, but couldnt make out the words.
"he's my dad. he and my mom are all I have... I want to make them happy, but this marriage is one thing I refuse to follow along with." She knew how he felt wanting to make everyone happy, nodding at him. "There is always someone that will end up miserable if you try and keep them all happy, more than likely it will be yourself that will end up hating life," she replied. She knew what that felt like, been through it first hand, "Perhaps you should focus on making yourself happy and in time your parents will see how happy you are and hopefully will be happy for you." She could hope for the best for him right, there was nothing to say that she couldnt and she felt she needed to now they had the truce.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 500px; -moz-border-radius: 0 185 185 0px;background-color: #062B43;] my universe will never be the same---------------------- i'm glad you came, i'm glad you came why was he still going on about this? raychel was just... just too easy to talk to. maybe he was drunk? but he hadn't any beverages at all for the night, and they weren't about to supply alcoholic drinks to teenage students, anyways. perhaps there was some sort of spell on the ballroom meant to make people act crazy, meant to force people to get along so that christmas would go off without a hitch and that, if a fight did break out, the supervising professors couldn't be held responsible because it wouldn't be around the great hall where they were watching over things. that seemed like the most plausible explanation for this madness.
jaycen did not have the perfect life. he just... tried to make it perfect. he didn't need to psychoanalyze himself to figure out why he'd gone on the quidditch team the first year, why he'd gone through a player phase to get the girls to like him in his fifth and part of his sixth years... he always aimed to please his parents, specifically his father. his dad told him to stop being a goody-two-shoes academically? he got involved in the 'only respectable sport'. his father told him to stop being such a pansy and get a girlfriend? he 'got' plenty. the guy screamed at him for being head boy? he entered his name into a potentially life threatening tournament just to appease him, and got picked. mind you, only one of those decisions were one jayce actually regretted in the end, but the point still stood that he had nearly, or possibly just plain, unhealthy devotion to keeping up a 'good' relationship with his father. it was kind of a joke, though. jayce suspected that his backing out of the marriage, once he should gather the courage to do so, had every potential to get him disowned. yay for loving fathers.
"there is always someone that will end up miserable if you try and keep them all happy, more than likely it will be yourself that will end up hating life," he'd been forced to realize that. hadn't quite stopped him from trying to please everyone, well, moreso his parents than anyone else, but he had realized it. maybe it was time to take such wisdom more to heart, though. after all, he'd be moving away from his parents in a few months... did it really matter if they were pissed at him if the most interaction he had was a visit every few months and letters? "perhaps you should focus on making yourself happy and in time your parents will see how happy you are and hopefully will be happy for you."
"i can only hope..." jayce sighed, directing his gaze away from the head girl towards the dance floor. he ran a hand through his hair, sighing slightly. he shouldn't be focusing on his parents... tonight was supposed to be about fun, and a possibility actually existed that that could be accomplished even with raychel as his date. "enough with the depressing family talk," he decided aloud, a small smile on his lips as he hesitated. "but... thanks for listening. no one's actually heard most of that stuff before..." was it wise to let her know that? it could give her ideas if they fought again.
a moment later he shook his head a fraction of an inch to himself. he didn't need to think about fighting with her, either. he just needed to enjoy the moment... make the best of their evening. after all, it was christmas. they needed to relax, have fun, let loose a little... "the basic point of that, is that i'm sorry i didn't mention chun before. might i be forgiven?" he grinned a bit, trying to be casual about it, though he wasn't actually sure if raychel would forgive him so easily for unintentionally seeming to humiliate her in front of everyone else as he thought was the reason she had been upset. "i could always take up an extra or two shift from you to make up for it." |

if i leave my heart with you tonight promise me that you're gonna treat it right. | Could a parent forever hate their child for doing all the things that Jaycen had said. Getting into Ravenclaw instead of slytherin, being head boy, becoming champion and playing in the quidditch team. It was irrational for a parent not to be proud. In fact she believed that those type of people she never have become parents in the first place. She had thought her parents were bad with the whole babying her after her sister's death phase, but he had it worse, so much worse.
"enough with the depressing family talk, but... thanks for listening. no one's actually heard most of that stuff before..." Yes enough of the family talk, enough with the depressing conversation. "Anytime," she replied. No one had heard what he had said to her before, she had been granted a privillage that not even his two best friends had. She felt...honoured by it. It meant that their friendship was well blossoming, whether she wanted it to or not. And who wouldnt want it to. Her thoughts and opinions about him for the past six years had been wrong, he wasnt the complete arsehole he was made out to be but an individual who was just trying to make it though school.
"the basic point of that, is that i'm sorry i didn't mention chun before. might i be forgiven?" She placed a finger on her lip, tapping it as she pretended to think. "I dunno," she replied slowly.
"i could always take up an extra or two shift from you to make up for it." She couldnt help but chuckle whilst shaking her head. She had already forgiven him, there was nothing to make up for it. "You're already forgiven. It was a misunderstanding, thats all. No need to take any extra shifts," she replied with a smile on her face. Besides those patrols were often ways of relaxing. Sure she often went up to the astronomy tower during her patrol just to sit and watch the stars, but to her it was relaxing. Now that said family talk was over, she had nothing to say to him, nothing to start another conversation and she figured if she asked him about the weather to strike up another conversation, he'd laugh at her. Then again so would she. Apart from the champions dance, this night was turning out to be far better than she expected and she didnt want it to end.
