jaycen was on top of the world. after practically single-handedly winning the last task for his house when claire was taken out of it, he felt rather invincible. normally he entered tasks wary, nervous even (though he would never admit it), but this time he was at a high. sure, there was the slight downer of his partner being his ex-not-really-girlfriend who he hadn't exactly been so kind to... but that had been three years ago. surely delilah could be mature enough to at least put their differences aside so that they could work together in the tasks? he'd be damned if ravenclaw lost because of a four year grudge which only existed because he had been a stupid, hormonal teen like pretty much every other fourth year guy.
the chilly silence that existed between them was a bit unsettling, though jayce was determined not to let it knock him off of his game. he had to be in focus right now, this was their chance. if ravenclaw placed first they were in excellent standing to win... especially if hufflepuff came in last. not that he really wished that on the 'puffs.... they were perfectly pleasant people, but the idea of winning was more intoxicating after last task's victory than it had ever been before. delilah was a capable witch. if the two of them proved that they could work together, they could soar through this task. everything would be fantastic.
an eternity seemed to pass, the head boy scuffing the toe of his foot against the ground in the heavy silence. he glanced up to his partner, but saw nothing but the back of her head as she stood away from him, apparently ignoring his existence. things had been like this since she'd been named claire's replacement. barely a word had been spoken between them, and the beater knew that it was his fault. "delil-" there it was, the whistle. there was no time to talk now as jaycen set out into the arena in search of their first target.

nervousness didn't make sense right now. nervousness held a place if you didn't think you would do well, and delilah knew she and jaycen could do this. she wasn't a half-bad witch, in the seventh year's humble opinion, and though she wasn't a fan of him as a person, she could grudgingly admit that jaycen was not terrible either. they were ravenclaws, the stereotypical smart house... they should have this in the bag. especially after jaycen's victory in the last task, vaulting them into second place overall. if they did well and hufflepuff tripped up they were golden. the only other team they really had to worry about was slytherin, and them minimally. gryffindor... well, their performance had been so poor that it was almost laughable. everyone had assumed harry potter's son would have the tournament in the bag, but apparently they'd gotten a harsh shock of the reality that heroics were not passed down in genes.
she still wasn't talking to jaycen. it was true that she had been elated when she was called as the replacement female champion for her house, but the next moment her heart had sank as she realized that she would have to work together with him. she'd never forgiven him for playing her as he had, though that had been in their fourth year. it was true that, as she'd observed from afar, jayce seemed to have matured as an individual in the past few years, but that wasn't good enough for her. she didn't think cheetahs could ever change their spots, so she would cooperate with him as was needed, but forgive him? no.
his voice startled her out of her thoughts as she stood, back turned to her fellow champion, but before he could finish saying what he wanted to say he was drowned out by the shrill whistle that signified the start of the task. by the time she turned back to him he was on his way, and the dark haired seventh year was shortly behind, feet pounding against the earth as they raced off to find their first item.

if given the chance, delilah would have to applaud those who created the arena for this task. the desert felt real, the heat rising from the sand scorching her skin. delilah didn't mind, she just took off the running sweater she had on and tied it round her waist as they ran, making sure that jaycen didn't put too much distance between them. as much as she might not like it, they were in this task together, they couldn't afford to lose each other in the arena and have one of them get hurt as had happened to jaycen and claire in the last task.
how long they ran for lilah wasn't sure. she let the head boy take the lead, merely keeping up with him and letting him choose the direction... and then suddenly it paid off. in the sand before her, on big rock, actually, stood a small vial of some potion. delilah could only assume that it was a good potion... at least, she hoped so. she wasn't focused on the potion for long, though, as a figure in front of it quickly caught her attention. tall, dark haired, wearing billowing wizard robe's... "dad," the female champion choked out, freezing in her tracks. her throat tightened at the site of the familiar man, hand clenching her wand tightly. he couldn't be here, he was dead, but still the sight of him had the seventh year girl frozen in terror, even as he was silent.

jaycen was praying that luck was on ravenclaw's side today. an early lead would give them momentum, and could be the difference between ending up a victorious first or sliding in at dead last. he would far prefer to be the one celebrating in the ravenclaw commons room tonight than the team sulking off to their dorm rooms, promising their housemates that they would 'do better next task'. the tournament was halfway over, and though things could be better jaycen was content with ravenclaw's current standing. he wanted to keep things that way rather than send them crashing down in despair.
the man standing in front of the small vial of some potion was familiar to jaycen, but only through a picture he'd seen many years before and the stories delilah had told him of her father. from the sounds of it, her dad and his would have been good friends, though delilah's father had been clearly more outspoken of his beliefs than the 'respectable' soren tate. from the tales lilah had told it didn't take a brain surgeon to realize that the figure in front of them was not her 'dear' father, but a boggart, which made jaycen internally cringe. what the hell was with all of the boggarts in the tasks? great, you discovered that one of the 'champions' of the school was turned into a statue when confronted with, for example, a bloody wooden trunk, what was the need to repeat that ten times? weren't there other ways for the student body and the professors to get their entertainment from these events? with that in mind, the head boy moved forward, putting himself between his partner and the boggart with his wand raised. "riddikulus."

perhaps ones father was a weird thing to have as your boggart, but in delilah's case it was more than true. no one really knew why, though. only those that she trusted understood the reasoning delilah had with fearing her father so much. everyone else just thought that he had been her dad, a normal working man, who had passed away when she was young. she didn't exactly want to advertise that he had been a death eater who had beat both her and her mother, and had died in front of her eyes when the aurors came after him after he killed muggle and muggleborn children. no, that wasn't the sort of story delilah wanted people to know at all. jaycen knew the truth because she had once trusted him, something she'd quickly learned to regret, but little others at the school were aware of it. lilah wished to keep it that way, which made the fact that he appeared as her boggart rather inconvenient. it was bound to create many questions.
with a single word from jaycen, though, the boggart shifted, suddenly dressed in a dress with ridiculously overdone makeup, a sight that even managed to summon a small giggle from the seventh year girl, one that she stiffled almost immediately as the boggart disappeared into nothing. casting a quick glance at her teammate, delilah moved forward and grabbed the small bottle, slipping it into her pocket. and and jaycen could debate over who got it later. "let's go."

it seemed like it would be just jaycen's luck for him to have to try to beat this bloody boggart ten times before it finally faded off into nothing, but apparently luck was on ravenclaw's side today. he could only hope that that luck would stick with them. a good start would be crucial to winning. if they got through the first few sections quickly, and some of the other teams (such as hufflepuff) lagged for one reason or another, they could get a lead that would stick with them for victory.
defeating the boggart quickly was the first step to getting that lead, and it worked well for the ravenclaws. jayce watched as the man, delilah's father, disappeared into thin air, leaving the coast clear for the female champion to jolt forward and grab the potion. she didn't even check to see what it was... what if it was something useful? whatever, he wasn't going to get into an argument with her just over a little potion. arguments were counterproductive towards working together. he couldn't hold back a look with a raised eyebrow, though, when she just brushed off his help practically ordering that they move on right away. "...you're welcome?"
whatever, he couldn't blame her for being uncooperative with him, so all he did was follow the girl off in whatever direction she wanted to take them.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]
this was incredibly frustrating. they were supposed to be a team, but the entire task was passing by in relative silence between them. what was the point? the middle of a task was not the time to sort out their differences and issues, but it would have to be addressed soon after this ordeal was finished. the fourth task would be huge, they had to figure out how to work together as well as they were able to before then.

unlike the crybaby headboy, delilah was perfectly comfortable in the silence that followed them as she hurried through the environment, partner in tow. as long as, when trouble did come, they were shooting their curses at the creature rather than each other, what was the trouble in their silence? talking would only distract them, and a distraction wasn't wise when you had to be focused on doing your best for your own benefit and the benefit of your house. she didn't take this whole 'house champion' deal lightly. she had a responsibility, she took it seriously, and jaycen better do the same.
what was frustrating, however, was that even after running along for what seemed like quit a while, they weren't finding anything at all. that just didn't work out for her. she wanted to be fast, and aimlessly wandering without finding a single helpful clue just didn't fly for the seventh year. gritting her teeth lilah kept casting glances in every direction, hoping to find something, anything, and then abruptly swerved to the left. "this way."

there really was no reason for delilah to make such a hasty move, cutting off jaycen in his path to switch directions. the two of them almost collided, and the head boy let out a startled "hey!' he couldn't make a point by heading off in the same direction they'd been going in previously, though, getting split up was not an option, and so the head boy twisted his own path to follow the dark haired seventh year, hoping that she wasn't steering them on a course in the complete opposite direction of where it was that they needed to be. wouldn't that be just fantastic?

was delilah in the mood for jaycen's whining and complaints? no, not at all. if he wanted to direct the path they took, he should lead and not hang back for her to take the lead, because she would gladly take it. there were few people who lilah was such a bitch towards, really jaycen was the only one, but the idiot had earned his treatment by the way he had acted around her. besides, she thought she'd seen something in the distance, and based off of a mere glimpse her move was made whether the head boy liked it or not.
and her actions paid off. as she neared the glinting object, resting under the glares of the sun, its shape and name becoming apparent as she neared it, slowing her pace without much care of whether jaycen ran into her or not. "a sneak-o-scope out here... odd, isn't it?" the girl paced around the object in a slow circle, keeping her gaze resting upon it. suddenly she paused in her steps, looking up at jaycen. "grab it in one, two, three." and with that she placed her own hand against the object, feeling the familiar tug that jerked her and her partner to the next area...

pixies. why was it always bloody pixies? not that he was complaining about the lack of surprises or anything, but he was so tired of the same old creatures, especially pixies. he'd encountered them with claire in the first task, again in the second, and they never became less annoying. each time the creatures proved to be the same pesky little irritants that they were told to be in the defence against the dark arts text books from jaycen's second year yet. couldn't they encounter something easier, like... say, a pygmy puff? that would be amazing. more than amazing, in fact.
but he didn't have the liberty of saying 'no' to any obstacle put in his way. that wasn't the way these tasks worked. all he had to do was push through the task, and hope that they could get rid of the nuisances and move on as quickly as possible. "diffindo," he growled, pointing his wand into the midst of the flock quickly approaching himself and delilah. maybe if he caught one of them with his spell the rest would be scared off. he could only hope he was so lucky.

delilah didn't have the same sort of repetitive feel about the creatures encountered in the tasks as jaycen did. after all, this was all brand new to her... the only comment she did have on them was that she hated boggarts. creatures who fed on your fear, your past, your experiences... there was no point for them on earth. they were despicable, and honestly, it was cruel to have them as a part of the hogwarts tournament. weren't the rest of the creatures alarming enough without them taking on the form of your worst fear? it wasn't like delilah was a coward, but she hated having her fears exposed to the world.
pixies were easier to handle, though just as annoying. what they guarded would be worth the trouble of dealing with them, as the felix felicius had been worth the trouble of deal with the boggart, she supposed. she moved after jaycen, hearing his spell first. it seemed as good as any to deal with the annoying bugs, and so the seventh year girl echoed her partner's words, pointing her wand straight out at the pixies. "diffindo."

maybe the word had gotten out throughout the pixie population. after facing jaycen twice, maybe some of the ones who had bolted from his wrath had gotten out to their friends and warned them not to stick around him for too long, or they'd get hurt. at least, jaycen would like to think that that was the reason. who didn't want a bit of an ego boost when the opportunity arose?
whatever the cause, when delilah's spells flew out with jaycen's the pixies scattered. the small vial a few of them had grabbed, lifting into the air, fell from their grasp as the tiny creatures fled off to safety, whatever little hole they might call their home. the head boy darted forward, hand reaching out to snag the vial out of midair before it could shatter against the hard ground. he glanced at it for a moment, frowning, and then tucked it into a pocket of his jacket as he glanced back to delilah. "one down, one more to go?"
