For some very odd reason, Poppy’s bed seemed much more comfortable this morning than most. Her pillow a little fluffier, her blankets warmer, her room without a draft, and could that be sunlight on her eyes? Unconsciously, she wiggled her warm little nose, sniffled and sneeze, recognizing the instant smell of her old room back at the Leaky Cauldron. The distinct smell of flowers, herbs, paint and turpentine wasn’t easy to miss. Funny that only a few days before heading home her bunk would start smelling like her room at home. Rubbing her eyes slowly, Poppy mechanically rose from the bed, not really wanting to leave the warmth of the little cocoon she’d formed in the duvet and sheets, expecting cold stone as her feet hit the floor. She was pleasantly surprised to find plush carpet under her toes instead, though confused as she didn’t have a mat next to her bed in the hufflepuff dorms.
When Poppy finally realized she wasn’t in her dorm and that she had taken her clothing out of drawers this morning instead of her messy trunk, she nearly squealed in excitement. She’d completely forgotten that it was yesterday that she’d gotten off the Hogwarts Express and stepped back into her home for the first time in nearly four months. With a renewed vigor despite her usual morning sluggishness, Poppy pulled on her socks, nearly tearing them as she yanked them past her knees and ran out the door to her room while trying to slip on her shoes at the same time. of course, she was home. nothing was more exciting than being able to spend the holidays with her parents, her brothers and the staff and patrons of the Leaky Cauldron, who were in fact just extensions of her family as far as she was concerned.
Nearing the kitchen, she almost knocked over a waitress with her momentum, before apologizing with a large smile and hugging Sophie tightly. It was so good to be home, really. She’d miss the friends she wouldn’t see, sure, and her teachers, but this was where she belonged. With a light laugh, she exited the breakfast-smelling kitchen and crossed over into the main dining area. She stopped for a minute to pick Frankie up after her rubbed himself against her legs, and held his weight high up enough so that he could see everything. “Look Frankie!” she said excitedly, using his paw to wave at the few early-morning visitors. “We’re home!”
