"Hot damn." Nikko snapped his fingers as he was told that he wasn't allowed to smoke on school premises. Of course he already knew that, was well aware in fact even as he had taken a cigarette out of the pack and placed the end between his lips. What was the lesser evil though, smoking on school property or sneaking off? Both were breaking rules after all. The snooty girl that had tried to lecture him about it at his usual haunt by the Whomping Willow, left her behind to find a new spot to indulge in his bad habit.
His feet led him down an even less beaten path toward to greenhouses, to slip behind one of the buildings, out of sight hopefully, and slide down, back against the window panes that let in all that good stuff for the plants to grow. It was quiet for mid day, especially when the sun was shining through those light grey clouds, warming things up a bit. Students should have been running around outside, having a good time in the fresh air.
Sucking in a deep lungfull of smoke he held it in for a few seconds until it started to burn, letting it billow out from his nose. It wasn't like Nikko had some big stress in his life that made him want to smoke, it wasn't for the relief or whatever. It was just something to keep him busy that he enjoyed. What did he care if he might get cancer and the other negative effects were countered easily enough. Sighing in bliss Nikko lulled his head back to rest against the glass. He liked those relaxing moment such as the one he was experiencing now.

Payton hugged her sweater closer to her body, already tired of the cold. She really liked having light spring and summer clothes on. Maybe it was because she was from Tennessee and not the UK. She pulled her collar up over her neck in an effort to keep warm. The sun was high in the sky and you’d think that it was warm out. But you’d be wrong. Shivering as she walked by the greenhouses Payton ducked inside and enjoyed how warm it was in there. She sat down on a bench and removed her sweater, happy to have some warmth that didn’t have to come from a bulky sweater. Unwrapping a bright Hufflepuff yellow scarf from her neck Payton folded it neatly on the chair next to her atop her jacket. Humming she at first didn't notice the boy sitting against the stairs. She was twirling her wand in one hand and kind of dancing a little in her chair. Standing she twirled around in a circle, happy to be dancing Then as she went up a few more steps, she stopped in front of him, realizing that he was there. A rather cute boy was looking back at her, and a blush crept to her cheeks. She hadn't thought anyone else was out there. So she shyly pushed some hair behind her ear and looked down then back up to him. "Hey," she said quietly.

His situational awareness wasn't always at the top of its game. In fact there were time when Nikko was down right oblivious. This instance however wasn't one of them. He had noticed the girl the moment she came in. How could he not she was wicked gorgeous, besides he recognized her from classes, the common room, and the like. In the past he hadn't taken any time out to really get to know her. It had been all flirtatious, lopsided smirks, passing pleasantries, maybe the occasional wink. Searching his memory bank for a name as the blonde went about getting into whatever beat was jazzing up her dance moves, a smile touched his lips between puffs on his smoke.
When people were passionate about things they tended to get lost in it and Nikko suspected that was the case here. One of those eureka moments hit him as she spun around, Payton! That was her name. For the most part he had a damned decent memory, which most wouldn't have expected from him. The majority of people thought he was too flippant and uncaring to really retain much information.
Once Payton finally did take notice of him sitting there Nikko offered as charming of a smile as his goofball self could. "Nice moves you got there sweetheart." He wasn't just being nice either. Nikko didn't know much about dancing, in fact his dance skills were more limited to classics like The Sprinkler, and The Mashed Potato. He was a simple kind of guy, but he wasn't blind. Even he could tell that she knew what she was doing. Snubbing out his finished cigarette, Nikko put the butt in his pants pocket. He wasn't going to liter.

In reality she was more of a ballet dancer than a random hip jiggling dancer, but Payton didn't really care much. She just wanted to dance. She saw the boy take another drag off the cigarette and then snuff it and place it in his pocket. She frowned upon smoking personally. She thought it was bad for the body. At the mention of her dance moves she smiled sweetly and nodded. "Thanks, though dancing comes naturally to me," she replied, trying to keep a blush from her cheeks. Even though she was a dancer, she preferred to keep the spotlight off of herself. "You're in Hufflepuff aren't you? It’s... Nikko I believe." She mentally patted herself on the back for remembering his name. After being ignored by most of her house, she wasn't good with most names, but Nikko had always been somewhat nice to her. Smiling back at him, she offered a hand to help him up, since he was sitting. Putting both her hands in her pockets, she lifted her eyes and pursed her lips a little. She wasn't sure what to say right now, since she'd never really gone much further than a 'hello' to him before. ”So… Hiding from the Professors so you can smoke your cancer stick?” she said with a drawl, a cute smile coming back to her face. She’d always stayed away from them because she knew that they could endanger her lungs and make it hard to dance. And she had dreams of dancing in the big time shows. So no smoking for her. She refrained from wrinkling her nose at the lingering smell of the cigarette, for she knew that it would offend the other Hufflepuff, and the last thing she needed to do was offend him.

Nikko could definitely see that about her. It was natural grace that definitely went hand in hand with that natural beauty of hers. Displacing a face like that wasn’t something that Nikko could ever do, it was always the names that he had trouble with. Given time, and that he had heard it before or been introduced in the past, he was able to recall and that was no different in this case. It was that proverbial click in his mind that flashing lights displayed it for him to read like a sign. Good memory quirk to have in a pinch, or at least that was how he felt about it. Seeing her blush was always nice, an ego booster for any guy, he didn’t care how much a bloke denied it they were lying through their teeth it they said otherwise.
Her remembering his name was an ego boost too. ”That’s right.” Once you heard his name once it was unique enough to be remembered without being so strange that you forgot. He had no qualms about having a lady lend him a hand up. For the most part Nikko was too laid back to care about all that mucho crap. Sure, he had his fair share of brawls but he was a Scot so it was more nature than some tough guy act, and he lost his fair share too. He was tall and lanky which meant he wasn’t all that agile or quick, nor was he the hardest hitter, but he could take a punch like a champ and get his arse kicked five ways from Sunday and still go out swinging, which was the important part.
Running a hand through his already disheveled he gave her a half-hearted, one-shouldered shrug. ”I got an ear full from some lass out by the Whomping Willow.” Offending Nikko was nearly impossible, he didn’t care what people thought of him, but he could get offended if someone was harping on a friend- he was loyal and protective like that. ”It’s a nasty habit but I love it.” Nikko wasn’t naïve to the health hazards he just liked to indulge in it and nothing was going to change that. He had heard every lecture in the book and simply didn’t care. ”I try to have the courtesy not to smoke in front of others so go in solitary places, but you know how that can be.” After all the green house had been empty just for few moments ago and look how that turned out. Nikko didn’t mind her being there though, in fact, now that his cigarette was finished, welcomed the company.
