you know how the time flies
the dust covering the various golden and bronze trophies and plaques that lines the walls of the trophy room were testament to the fact that this little area, this secret quiet paradise, was one of the lesser visited areas of the school. it was understandable. teenagers lived for the moment, not to dwell on the achievements and accomplishments of those long dead in the past. it was just the teenage way. you were always looking towards the future, right?
zac could understand that. hell, he was that much of the time. live life in the moment, laugh, joke around, spend minimal time on past mistakes... but still, this was cool. the quiet dusty room had a simple elegance to it, a feeling that nowhere else in the magical school possessed. the greatest students and professors in hogwart's past were celebrated here, their names forever engraved into 'stone', or metal was it was, for future generations to see. true, ninety precent of the names upon various awards meant absolutely nothing to the muggleborn wizard, but it was what they stood for that was just... well, plain awesome. the people celebrated here were the best of the best. it was a personal dream of zac's to someday have his name up on the wall with everyone else's. quidditch captain of a winning team, perhaps? he couldn't see himself somehow being a hero to allow himself some special award... a quidditch one would be perfectly fine. of course, he had some awesome competition for that position once lyra was gone, so he wasn't pinning his hopes and dreams on that off chance. still, it'd be cool.
while other students in his year and house might be cramming for the next morning's exam at this time, nine pm in the evening, zac was too restless to sit and study. the quiz in transfiguration the next day promised to be fairly simple so, as he often did, he'd decided to talk a walk through hogwarts. it was kind of cool at this time of day, the sun was generally gone and with it all natural lighting, so the castle was illuminated by torches quietly flickering in their holders on the walls. castles had fascinated zac since he was little, living in one was an accomplished dream, of course he would take advantage of it to enjoy it. generally he would go to the courtyard or a tower to enjoy the view and fresh air, but today his feet had brought him on his path to the trophy room, where he now stood, looking at the section of the room that held the names of students who had accomplished amazing feats over the years. maybe someday his name could be added. someday...

Joy had no idea where her feet were going to take her now. There weren't many places in the castle that she hadn't seen or been to but she still wondered where her wandering might take her. When there was nothing else left to do with her day Joy usually left herself to wandering about the castle. She would just pick somewhere to start from and then just walk with no particular purpose or ending point until she got somewhere interesting. Doing this for the last six years had revealed many great places in the castle to go that usually you wouldn't think of going. Each floor of the castle held something new and exciting just waiting to be discovered. Of course some areas were off limits and despite her curiosity she had never ventured into them, a stickler for the rules you could say.
Today she had started wandering about on the fourth floor but finding nothing of interest there she proceeded down towards the third floor. She meandered down the hallway at a leisurely pace, humming softly to herself as she did. About twenty strides down the hall she spotted some movement and realized that there was someone else here as well, someone in the trophy room. The trophy room was nothing new to her, she had visited the room a few times over her stay at Hogwarts but not at all recently so she decided to stop in and take a look around as well. She hoped whoever it was that was already in the room wouldn't mind. She strode over to the doorway and then stepped inside clearing her throat purposefully so that the boy didn't think she was trying to be sneaky or anything.
"Hope you don't mind if I join you" she said to him as she glanced over at him. She thought she recognized him, another fellow Hufflepuff but she wasn't familiar with him. Probably one of those people that she had just never bothered to meet. During her time at school her interactions with her peers had been painfully few and far between. She had a few good friends but other than that tended to stick to herself. Maybe she really was too withdrawn, maybe she did need to make more friends. With a shrug she decided she might as well try it, maybe this fellow housemate would be a friendly guy. Only way to find out was to talk to him right?

you know how the time flies
"hope you don't mind if i join you" the voice that broke the silence startled the sixth year at first, but he relaxed as he instinctively turned to see the speaker and found one of his classmates standing there. once he recognized the girl he let a warm grin spread over his features as he nodded, giving her a small wave with his hand. "of course i don't mind, joy," he assured her, letting his attention drop from the trophies and awards the lined the wall before him and over to his classmate.
of course he recognized her. the blonde haired boy had always had an excellent memory for names and faces, and it would be a disgrace if he didn't know of one of the girls he'd grown up with. they were not only in the same year, they were in the same house. especially in their younger years before they were able to choose their classes they'd had nearly identical time tables. not that zac had ever liked her and therefore paid too much attention to her, or anything, he just had a good memory for her face and name and often saw her around in the commons area. if she didn't remember him, that was fine with the sixth year. yeah, he did consider himself to be a pretty friendly guy, but he was a muggleborn wizard and sometimes didn't seem to quite fit into the happenings at hogwarts. he was an outgoing dude when people would put up with him, but for the most part liked to hang out with dunstable and his long time friends until he got to know other people better. he had no illusions of being the most popular guy in the castle, however awesome that would actually be.
he ran a hand through his hair, moving a little bit closer to her. he didn't like awkward encounters, but things were only awkward if you allowed them to be. that was always his motto. if you didn't act like an idiot, you weren't one. if you didn't act like things were awkward and unusual, they weren't. "what brings you to the trophy room?"

Joy was a little bit surprised when the boy knew her name right off the bat. That surprise soon turned to slight embarrassment because she had no idea what his name was. Six years of classes together and of sharing the same common room and she still had no idea what his name might be. That showed her just how little she payed attention to those around her. That was something she needed to change otherwise she was going to end up alone forever, at least that is what she thought would happen. "Wow I didn't expect you to know my name" she replied with a small laugh "I have to say I have no idea what your's is, sorry" she frowned slightly.
Joy looked around at the trophies around her, hoping that the situation wouldn't become awkward. She worked really hard to just be calm, cool and collected and not let anything freak her out right now. She genuinely wanted to make some new friends but knew she wouldn't be able to do that if she didn't let people inside her walls. "Was just wandering around the castle and ended up here really. No particular reason just horrible boredom" she replied with a laugh. The castle may be big but when there was no classes, no homework and you really had hardly any friends it became really boring. She spent most nights by herself reading or writing generally.
"What about you?" she inquired, wondering what had brought him to the trophy room on this fine evening. Joy tried to remember if she knew anything about the boy at all, what he liked to do, who he hung out with, just anything to place him in her memory. She thought maybe he hung out with the Dursley kid but couldn't be sure. She was realizing just how sad her time at Hogwarts had been so far, she was a sixth year and had spent her entire existence cooped up in her dorm or some corner somewhere. With only one and half years left at the school she wanted to make it memorable somehow.
