The clouds overhead had darkened ominously as all the students made their way to Hogsmeade, or at least the students who wanted to go went. Despite the gloominess and the possibility of rain, Poppy had smiled for her entire trip to the village, keeping the smile on as she passed through Honeydukes first, stopping at the Three Broomsticks for lunch with a few friends, and then going out to explore Honeydukes a little more and running some errands for her father before heading into Scrivenshaft’s Quill Shop to get herself new drawing pencils to replace her last ones, which had not only been getting used and grubby, but she had misplaced a few and needed to get a new set as she couldn’t find the replacements. With her purchase under her arm, she made one last stop in Tomes and Scrolls to see if the books she’d ordered had come in, but apparently they hadn’t, and she’d have to check in during the next Hogsmeade trip.
As she exited the old shop with the smell of musky dust and old paper on her, a distinguishing characteristic of the old books held in the shop and the news ones that took on the smell if they were sitting there for too long, she was a little disappointed. She’d ordered those books of prints weeks ago, and she was trying to be patient, but she couldn’t wait to get her hands on them and try the new techniques they held for her to discover. Poppy didn’t really like buying books about painting or drawing or art, but she had some that were very useful and others that weren’t, she preferred having books of pictures of paintings, so she could see the techniques and try to recreate them herself. Adding her own little splash of originality and passion in everything she did.
Not two minutes after she had left the shop, she found her toe caught on something hard, and nearly fell over when it did. She took a moment to dislodge it, watching her arms and being careful not to drop anything she’d acquired during the day. When she finally caught herself and her center of balance had taken over after a brief spill, she looked down and was surprised to see that it was a person, laying on the side of the street, possibly sleeping or passed out. Why would someone be down there? She looked up and saw that the sky had darkened considerably and not only as the heavier rainclouds rolled in, much time had passed and it was probably nearing dinnertime.
Her eyebrows knit together in confusion, at the same time her hand seemed to automatically reach into her messenger bag and pull out her sketch pad, fingers eager to acquaint themselves with her new pencils. It took her less than two minutes to stuff everything she could into her bag and set it down with what couldn’t fit, and take a seat on the cobblestone sidewalk, disregarding the fact that she was wearing skirt and it probably wasn’t the most lady-like thing. Quickly, her fingers went to work drawing out the basic skeleton for the man, trying to capture the awkwardness of his position as best as she could.

Hogsmeade weekends were generally fun for Aderyn, the idea of escaping Hogwarts for a little while and exploring if only for a few hours before she had to return to Hogwarts. Not that she didn’t love Hogwarts, she adored it, it was her home away from home but she liked the idea of getting out a little more. It was why she loved walking around in the small village, and she usually made plans to meet up with Poppy or one of her other friends. That was of course who Aderyn was currently looking for, Poppy. Her best friend was known to get easily distracted, and Aderyn was starting to think that’s what had happened. They were supposed to meet at the Three Broomsticks but maybe Poppy had gotten side tracked, she waited for a few minutes before deciding to hunt the hufflepuff girl down. She pulled her coat closer, glad that she hadn’t brought her cloak around, because the winter coat her mother had bought for her before she had returned to Hogwarts. She bit down on her lip as she tried to figure out where her best friend could be, there were so many options. She was starting to think it would have been a good idea to ask someone if they had seen Poppy, since there were a lot of Hogwarts students running around today.
She decided to try that bookshop she frequented, Aderyn had found a lot of interesting books in that place, and she knew Poppy loved it. She turned in the general direction of the shop, it was in one of the emptier streets of Hogsmeade a bit far from the normal path, so she had to be careful about where she stepped. She was reaching the shop, when she saw two figures not that far away from the bookshop, and she was not paying attention to them initially but she noticed something odd. First of all one of the figures seemed to be doing something, and Aderyn’s curiosity got the better of her. She gripped her wand, in case she had come across something bad, but the closer she got the more she relaxed. The figure that was moving, it looked very familiar and the closer she got the more she realized it was her best friend. She was caught in between amusement and horror that Poppy was literally on the ground, which had to be freezing and she seemed to drawing the other person. He was obviously homeless, just because he was laid out in the middle of the street, and unconscious. She seemed to be very concentrated on the drawing she was working on, and from where she was standing she could tell that Poppy was doing a fantastic job of recreating the man on paper. But she also had a feeling that if the man woke up, he would not take well to two teenage girls staring at him. Deciding to break her friend’s concentration because she was not sitting down in the most appropriate manner given what she was wearing, she tapped the other girl on the shoulder.
“Poppy, sweetie. What are you doing?” She asked.

When her lithe fingers had finished with her lightest pencil as the skeleton for the man, forming his curved back and his one arm that was tucked up against himself and the other splayed out on the sidewalk, she stuck it between her thick lips for safe keeping as she pulled out another pencil. Quickly, lines started to make up the basic lines for the man’s rumpled and dirty clothing, before that pencil was also placed in her mouth and her fingers had another, drawing in more definitive lines to give distinction to the clothing and start forming the scruffy face. It was a sequence that Poppy had long ago perfected; this wouldn’t be the first random person she’d found in the streets or laying on a park bench and decided to draw.
Of course, most people would find that little tidbit of information quite odd, but if they knew Alice, it wouldn’t be. She had an uncanny talent for finding beauty in the most unusual things, be they person or object. She wasn’t quite sure she knew anyone else who could stare at a coffee mug and keep drawing it over and over in different ways that played with the light and the contrast of it. Then again, people always said that Poppy was one of a kind... though she wasn’t sure if they meant it as a good thing when they said it. At least most people seemed fine with her; if they weren’t, she didn’t notice until they told her.
In the back of her mind, through her concentration, Poppy could hear her name being called, and willed herself out of her little world where nothing existed by her and her subject as quickly as possible. Her hands stilled on the paper as she answered.
“Mm rawing,” came her muffled reply. “Oops,” she said again, spitting out the pencils from her mouth to answer properly, putting them away as she did so, leaving her sketch half done. “I’m drawing,” she said innocently, listening to the ‘thunk’ of the pencils as they hit the bottom of the case. “Fffft,” she brushed her hair out of her eyes and held it back with her hand as she looked up to who was talking to her. “Oh hi Adie!” she exclaimed excitedly. “What’re you doing here?”

Aderyn was always amused by her best friend, she had yet to find someone who didn’t find Poppy Longbottom completely adorable. It was actually kind of funny because Aderyn was the stronger one of the pair but of course Poppy was loved by everyone so it was hard to find anyone who was mean to her. It obviously didn’t mean that Aderyn wasn’t always on guard anyway because she didn’t want anything to happen to her best friend, because in all honesty Poppy was way too innocent for people to even dream of wanting to hurt her. Either way she watched with amusement at how easily her friend got lost in things, and then she answered her question and Aderyn fought back a giggle. Trust Poppy to forget that she had something in her mouth before answering something. She watched as Poppy put away her pencils and she took a step back to make sure her friend had enough room to get up without disturbing the man. Aderyn looked at him, hoping he was fine, but also kind of scared that if they tried to help him he would wake up and yell at them. After all they had no idea why he was laying there in the first place, maybe they could just let an adult know that he was there.
“Any particular reason why you decided to draw in the middle of the street?” she asked, with an amused smile.
She let out a laugh when Poppy finally realized it was her, she understood how easily one could become immersed in an activity so she didn’t blame her for not realizing it was her until they were face to face. Either way she was glad that she was up, because in all honesty the floor did not look all that comfortable and it did look kind of dirty as well. She brushed a strand of hair from her face as she looked at her best friend. Honestly she had just been looking for Poppy she had grown quite bored of roaming Hogsmeade on her own. Unlike many of the third years she just came to Hogsmeade to escape the castle for a little while, she found nothing super exciting about it anymore. Unless you were with friends, then things tended to be a lot more fun. Like say this situation, no one else could say that they were going to run into their best friend sitting in the middle of the frozen street sketching an old man who appeared to be knocked out. She laughed, and motioned Poppy away from their current spot because she was getting kind of cold and of course she didn’t want the man to wake up and suddenly attack them or something.
“Well I was shopping around for some things, then I got bored. So I decided to look around for you, and I decided to check where I usually find you” she said, “But look at that, I end up finding you in the middle of the street, drawing. Did you have fun at least?”
*ick this sucks next one will be better!

Poppy considered Aderyn her very best friends; which was odd if you actually took a moment to look at the girls. If you didn’t know much about them, and merely saw them in passing, it was common to see them as a fairly odd pair. Though in reality, they balanced each other out quite well. Aderyn had always been the stronger of the girls, in will, intelligence and sound of mind, while Poppy was always the spastic, airy and bubbly of the two. They did share many common personality traits, and their differences only served to bring them closer together. Poppy needed Adie to balance her out and keep her grounded, while Poppy served to remind Aderyn that life wasn’t all work, and that it was good to let loose every once in a while and just enjoy herself. If ever there was anyone who simply enjoyed life, it was Poppy.
Poppy could only shrugs at Aderyn’s question with a smile. She had a habit of just stopping everything she was doing to get in a sketch or a painting, depending on where she was, and usually it got on people’s nerves. More than once she’d held up her family during shopping trips when she decided to grab a piece of paper and use a wall as a table, and just draw something when inspiration hit. She couldn’t help it; it was the curse of being creative. “Uhm... Inspiration hit?” she answered, though it sounded a bit more like a question. Whenever someone asked her, she was never sure how to answer. All she knew was that she wanted to draw, and it wasn’t harming anyone when she decided to go at it. it hardly could have bothered the bum either, considering he was passed out and had no idea what was going on just five feet from him. “He was just laying there all peaceful, and so beautiful that I had to draw him.”
“That sounds like a good day,” Poppy said, gathering her things and putting them back in her bags, taking one last look at the man so she could finish the drawing later, trying to engrave the image in her mind. Hopefully she’d be able to conjure it up later in enough detail to finish, or it would bug her forever. “Let’s go do something then!” Poppy said excitedly, threading her arm through Aderyn’s. “Boredom is terrible, afterall!”

She was caught between wanting to shake her head at Poppy to just laughing just because of just how different she and her best friend were. To anyone who saw them, they would wonder how on earth they were friends if they were so different. But Aderyn knew that Poppy kept her life in balance, she was the one that always made sure she didn’t always get so involved in her schoolwork. While Aderyn’s job was to make sure no on hurt Poppy or took advantage of her naivety. They were the perfect pair if you thought about it, they balanced each other out and they played to each other’s strengths. She watched as Poppy merely shrugged, it was typical Poppy. To just drop everything she was doing and just sit down and sketch some random person, even if the person really wasn’t aware of it. While that was endearing, it was also dangerous, it was why Aderyn didn’t want Poppy doing these types of things when she wasn’t around. She wouldn’t be able to have her best friend’s back if she had no idea what her best friend was doing. She brushed back a piece of hair as she waited for Poppy to respond, and she did, which only made her want to giggle.
“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” she said with a small laugh.
She shook her head when she said that he looked peaceful and beautiful. Trust Poppy to be able to see beauty in someone who was obviously passed out in the middle of the street. Either way she would feel much better when they were away from him, because they had no way of knowing if the man was dangerous or if he was just a meek old man who had too much to drink. She nodded when Poppy said that her day had sounded good, it had been pretty okay. It obviously could have gone better, but it was all okay now. Just as long as she could spend some time with Poppy and just forget about school and any other pressures. Some of the classes were beginning to get to her, and she just wanted to be able to relax and not focus on anything for a while. Poppy tended to provide her with that, and she readily took it. She watched as Poppy took one more look at the man, no doubt trying o remember him so that she could finish drawing him later. Aderyn knew her best friend, and dhs knew that if she didn’t get to finish her drawing of the old man it would bug her. Just like not finishing a book or an assignment would bug Aderyn. She laughed when Poppy said that they should go do something because boredom was terrible. She could very readily agree with her friend in that aspect because Aderyn hated being bored, usually she had too much to do to have any time to be bored, but it did happen eventually.
“That sounds like a plan, where should we go first? The three broomsticks or keep looking around the shops for nice things?” she asked.
