Class had just started for today, and Stephanie was feeling pretty good so far. It was early, and the sun was barely up yet, not only that, but the few beams of light that did peak past the horizon were blocked out by the lingering clouds – a small blessing for those who didn’t enjoy sunlight. The class was busy, voicing mingling together as friends and classmates discussed what they would be doing later this afternoon, asking how their tests and such had went and whether they wanted to hang out this weekend. It was a pleasant atmosphere to be in, and Stephanie soon found herself turned around in her seat as she too joined into the various conversations that were taking place all around her, mostly with her house mates, but also with a few Hufflepuff girls that were sitting nearby. The teacher wasn’t in yet, but she would be soon, so every minute counted because once class started, you knew better than to interrupt her – unless you enjoyed having your entire house angry with you for costing them points.
Honestly, the person that had come up with the house point system was brilliant. Your actions didn’t affect just yourself, but all the people you basically lived with as well, and while some might think it unfair, Stephanie thought it was an excellent method of control. Peer pressure made most students behave decently, and the ones that did misbehave still did it less than they would have otherwise.
The front rows of the class were alerted to the teacher’s presence when the back rows fell eerily quiet. And yes, there she was, pacing into the class with admirably speed, especially when you looked at how huge her book was. That thing had to weigh a ton. As soon as she reached her desk and had set her books down, she began to speak, and everyone listened intently save for a few people on the back rows which wasn’t too surprising, usually only lazy people sat there, people who didn’t actually care about their homework much.
Just as everyone prepared to open their books, the teacher stopped them, telling them they wouldn’t be needing those today. Today, they would be paired up in couples to create a potion; the most complex potion they felt they could handle. Stephanie suspected this was a way of testing which students needed more attention in class and which were doing well and required less focus. The weak students would be forced to make a fairly simple potion as that was the best they could do, while the strong ones made a genuinely complex one, having enough skill and knowledge to pull it off. She liked it.
What she didn’t like so much was the whole pairing up thing. Despite being a social creature, Stephanie had never really enjoyed assignments that required you to work with others, especially not potions assignments as that would require using one cauldron, which made it difficult for each of the team members to just do their part and never mind how the rest did. Stephanie was at a certain level, and while she understood that not everyone was at that level, she disliked having to downgrade. It was either that, or do what she would’ve done had she been alone, and have the other kid look on with glazed over eyes; it would make her feel like a show-off.
As the teacher began to pair people up, Steph prayed that she would get paired up with another Ravenclaw. With a Ravenclaw, you at least knew they would be intelligent, as they wouldn’t have been sorted there were the opposite true. Today’s class was with Hufflepuff, which was always a gamble and not a fun gamble either. You never knew what you were going to get. While there were most certainly intelligent students in Hufflepuff, she’d also heard from a guy in Slytherin (perhaps not the most objective source) that Hufflepuff was the house of spares. Those that didn’t fit in with any of the other houses were still qualified to enter Hufflepuff. They didn’t need the courage of a Gryffindor, the cunning of a Slytherin, or the intellect of a Ravenclaw. Really, they needed no talent at all, and while Stephanie didn’t think the entire house was made up of spares, there was always the risk of getting paired up with one, which would mean either working below her level or coming across as a show-off. It was a lose-lose situation for her.
Her name was being called, and Steph looked up with a nervous expression on her face. “Ravenclaw, please let me work with a Ravenclaw.” as fate would have it, she got the exact opposite, and was paired up with a girl from Hufflepuff.
Sighing softly, she began to grab the items she’d need and simply hoped that the girl worked at her level. But then it sunk in… what name had the teacher just called again? Sabrina Lunel? “Crap!” she cursed inwardly as she dropped a few pencils on the floor. Sabrina and herself had never really gotten along, which was only natural considering what they both were. Vampires and Werewolves simply clashed by nature, it was in their blood, and blood had a strong influence on people like them. Even though neither of them were a full vampire or werewolf, their blood had still caused tension between them, apparently even a small fraction was enough to cause trouble. It wasn’t really hate as much as it was just a general feeling of unpleasantness and distaste she felt around the girl. She imagined the feeling was mutual, because Sabrina had never given her the idea that she liked her either. What was the teacher thinking, placing these two together? If they’d been the only students then fine, but there was an entire class filled with people who would be a better match for them.
Unless of course, that was the plan, to put people together who wouldn’t normally want to work together and see how well they did despite their differences.
With a huff, Stephanie stood up from her chair and crossed her arms as she made her way over to a free cauldron. When Sabrina was close enough, Steph nodded a greeting, “Lunel,” She spoke in a neutral tone, her voice not holding its usual joyful pitch and her trademark smile was completely wiped off her face.
This was going to suck, wasn’t it?
((I suck at thread titles, but at least it's easily recognizable? xD))
