Lazy days like the one that Nikko was currently faced with always had him restless. There was nothing to do, well nothing that interested him really. Sure, there was that essay that he could have been writing or practicing that new charm, but why work on your day off. It seemed an abomination to him, an affront to his slacker nature. Thus, Nikko had taken to lounging about the common room. At least he had for a while, stretching out on the over stuffed couch that sat so cozy-like in front of the crackling fireplace, an arm draped over his eyes as though he were taking a snooze in the middle of the day, but that wasn’t really the case. No, Nikko was just listening to the goings on of the common room.
He loved Hufflepuff House. It was, by far, the cheeriest of all. Or so Nikko liked to believe. It always had such a homey feeling to it. A warmth in the rich colours that decorated the rooms. Where some might have been ashamed to be in such a fluffy house, Nikko took pride in it. The younger years spent a lot of their time playing games in the common room, Gobstones was the only one that Nikko actually enjoyed playing and when he bored of laying about, decided to get up and join a game that a couple of third years were starting. He could be a bit of a bad influence of the younger kids though, as, for purposes of greater entertainment, Nikko suggested a wager be put in place. Rather than the loser simply being humiliated by getting that disgusting liquid that the stones excreted on them the winner also got a Galleon, one from each of the losers, for his triumph. It wasn’t a particularly large bet, but they were only third years so didn’t expect them to be laying down big coin in a gamble.
Nikko, as he had anticipated he would, had wiped the floor with the less skilled boys he had been playing against and two shiny Galleons were placed in his open hand. “Better luck next time.” He offered with a smug, yet some how still slightly sympathetic expression on his face. Standing up from the table they had been playing at, Nikko rubbed the two coins together before shoving them into the pocket of his trousers. His face lit up with a smile as he saw Shailene and made a beeline for the girl. “Hey there toots.” He greeted slinging his arm around her shoulder to pull her in close to his side.

Shailene had spent the pass few hours in the library working on her school work assigned by the many professors within the school. Although Shailene wasn't an overly ambitious Ravenclaw she was a rather busy Hufflepuff who kept herself occupied by taking almost every class in the school. She didn't want to miss out on anything and always wanted to be prepared if she ever wanted to change careers later in life.
The sun had begun to set which signaled to Shailene that it was time to put away the books and head back to the common room. It took a few minutes for her to place every book in its rightful place but she would never leave a mess behind for the librarian to clean up. Packing her own books into her bag, Shailene shouldered her famous polka dotted bag and left the library behind. She was sure she would be there tomorrow to finish up anything she wasn't able to get to today.
Shailene walked to the Hufflepuff basement running into no one she knew. Payton was most likely asleep even though it wasn't that late but Nikko was sure to be up. Shailene entered the common room and smiled as an arm wrapped around her shoulders pulling her into a side hug. "Hey love." She said. "What have you been up to? No, wait let me guess. Ignoring your homework and playing gobstones?" She asked even though it really wasn't a question. She knew her Nikko pretty well.

That bag of hers managed to knock into his knee in the process of pulling her into him and already Nikko knew why Shailene had just waltzed through that door, and it hadn’t been because she was out boozing it up either. When it came down to it he really could stand to take a page out of her book. Just because he wasn’t a brain didn’t mean that he couldn’t put just a little bit more effort forward. It wouldn’t have killed him. But thinking on it a little more, dramatically, Nikko recanted that thought. It probably would, he could get Carpul Tunnel, or something equally as unpleasant if he over exerted himself. An aneurysm, that was possible… better not risk it he figured.
Shaking his head Nikko shot a glance at the sulking boys that he had just left. “Am I really that predictable?” He hoped not, but Shailene had an unfair advantage, knowing him as well as she did. Didn’t mean that Nikko was predictable, just that Shailene was immensely perceptive when it came to matters involving him. “But I wasn’t playing Gobstones.” He informed smartly. “I was winning at Gobstones. Suckered a couple a third years out of two Galleons, I did.” How very proud and accomplished Nikko seemed about it too. “Now I can buy the pretty lady a well deserved Butterbeer because, undoubtedly, you have been hard at work in the library.” The bag gave it away really, not that Nikko was terribly perceptive himself, even when it came to people he was well acquainted with.
It was sad really that Nikko could be as naïve as he was, but that didn’t change the fact that he saw things in black and white, no gray areas. Or that he sometimes couldn’t see past his own nose despite his face on many occasions. Nikko had his flaws and he wasn’t the type to deny them either. In fact, often, he was the one to first point them out, make them well known so that whoever he was dealing with would have some semblance of an idea as to what the expect from him.

"Sorry." Shailene said to Nikko as she saw her bag full of books collide with his knee cap. Gripping the strap harder she readjusted it on her shoulder more securely than it had been before. Shailene couldn't keep a straight face with Nikko. He almost sounded hurt when he asked if he was predictable. "Just to me." She said with a small laugh. "I'm sure you still have the rest of the school fooled." She added as she looked around the common room. There wasn't a great deal of people sitting about, most had probably went up to bed by now. Shailene was entertaining the thought for she knew she had more work to do tomorrow but she wanted to spend a bit of time with one of her best friends.
"I bet you feel all high and mighty tricking students three years younger than you." She said glancing at him. Although she would never do the same as Nikko, she knew that he wasn't coming from a malicious place by conning those boys out of their money. 'You know gambling is illegal in Hogwarts. I should dock some house points for it." Her voice was stern but not serious. She would let it slide this time. "But you better keep that offer of a butterbeer on the table or I just might change my mind." Shailene joked as she walked over to the couch and tossed her bag on the floor with a thump. "So what are you planning on doing tonight? Are you ready for bed or do you have something else in mind." Shailene asked as she held back a yawn. "I don't want to know if its something that I'll have to become my prefect self again either, so only rule accepted ideas." She added quickly.

”Ain’t nothing but a thing,” He flourished a hand in the air dismissively. “Besides I’ve got idiot strength.” Cracking that cheeky grin of his, Nikko wasn’t being self-depricating really, just joking around. He could turn anything into flippancy- it was a skill of his. Sure his knee did twinge a slight bit but there was no reason to make Shailene feel bad about it. Anyway he had brought it on himself, should have been a little less eager to pull her into him then it might have been avoided. It was well worth the meager pain though. “Good, I’d hate to think of what punishment you would cook up for me if I had to try harder to be unpredictable.” He was feisty enough without having to prove any points.
Wiggling his loose tie in a mock attempt to straighten it out to appear more distinguished his Scottish accent made it nearly impossible to sound posh but that didn’t stop Nikko from trying. “It does. I don’t know what they were thinking when they agreed to play against me when I am so clearly superior.” He got the pompousness down just not the accent. Nikko didn’t mind though he was just goofing off as it was. Was it really illegal or was Shailene just pulling his leg? “Hot damn, is it really? I’ll be more discreet about it next time, maybe form an underground bookies while I’m at it.” Though Nikko wasn’t serious it wasn’t a half bad idea now that he thought about it. But no he wouldn’t do anything like that… well not on that large a scale at least.
He followed her over to the couch kicking back on it with feet propped up for maximum comfort. Nikko wasn’t tired in the least. As exhausting as doing nothing all day could be that wasn’t the case now. There was an eagerness in him actually that was just itching to do something that night. “”So no streaking down the halls, starting a football game in the common room, or playing strip poker- man.” Nikko snapped his fingers. “What does that leave then?” Really all of those things were something that he actually would do which made it all the more hilarious for him. It had a lot to do with why he would never have been asked to be a Prefect, go figure.

Sometimes Nikko could be so cheesy but it was a quality that Shailene couldn't help but love in her best friend. Whenever she was having an off day all she had to do was go seek out Nikki and he would surely put a smile on her face in an matter of seconds. His grin was infectious and Shailene was soon laughing at his foolishness. "Oh jeez, I don't even want to have to ponder that idea." She said. "It would be something serious because you would be risking my life if you stopped being unpredictable, I might just die of boredom." Shailene joked, giving Nikko a smile.
"Knock that off, that look and sound doesn't suit you at all." Shailene informed him, though she knew Nikko was quite aware of this. "Pompous doesn't fit you deary." The smile remained on her face, as it always seemed to do while she was around Nikko. "You never know they just might surprise you and take you down a notch." She warned. "Can you imagine how much they would rub it in your face because they finally won." Shailene said laughed lightly. It would truly be a sight to see if that happened and if it did Shailene would love to see Nikko's reaction. "Going bigger is just going to put you in the whole more if you ever got caught." Shailene stated. "But yes its illegal, its in the handbook." Shailene said shaking her head a bit. She should of known that he hadn't ever read it.
"All of those things I wouldn't even partake in if they were allowed. I'm not getting naked in front of you Nikko." She said laughing. It wasn't that she was a prude but she didn't want to go showing her whole body off to everyone either. She had morals and maybe sometimes those morals held her back from doing things but at least at the end of the day she could go to bed happy knowing she stuck to her guns.

Was it actually possible to die of boredom? No, it couldn’t be but then if that wasn’t the case then what about all of that nonsense about dying of a broken heart and if that was true then couldn’t dying of boredom be true also? Nikko didn’t much like the thought of Shailene dying at all, which was why his smile was a little more feeble in that moment. Nikko was the flippant type but that didn’t mean that there were some things that he took seriously, especially when it came to the people that he cared about.
She was right though. Pompous didn’t suit him. He could be a little bit arrogant sometimes, but who wasn’t from time to time. Nikko could have always called semantics into play; he wasn’t arrogant, he was overly confident on occasion. It was something that he allowed himself to think and confidence wasn’t a bad thing. There was a chance in the laws of probability that one of these days the suckers that he hustled out of their money, innocently enough, would beat him. “I’m sure they would throw a huge stink about it, throw a parade maybe, toss some confetti.” Nikko nodded knowingly. He could see it now, a crowd of younger students all banning together to party over him finally loosing. But he was distracted in his thoughts by what she said next. Drawing back in surprise his eyebrows shot up. “You actually read the handbook?” It was unfathomable to him.
Nikko did realize that two out of three of his suggestions had involved being naked but it didn’t really register with him until Shailene pointed it out. He just didn’t have any of the reservations that others might have in similar situations. “That’s too bad.” Which she was his best friend but also a very pretty girl. It would have been stupid to turn down the opportunity to fully appreciate a fine female specimen. That was probably crossing some friend line but he just couldn’t bring himself to let all the potential problems that would come of it to turn him away from the notion that he wouldn’t pass up the chance.

The dim smile on Nikko's face, which was a rarity to even see him without one, made Shailene sorry for joking about such a thing. Of course death was never a subject one should joke about but Shailene had only meant it as an expression. She wasn't entirely sure that it was possible for a person to die of bordem. Perhaps it was but there had never been a recorded death linked to such a cause. "Don't worry Nikko, I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. Even if you did become a predictable prat." Shailene said.
"I bet they would even use the money they won off of you to buy the supplies for such a party." Shailene teased. It would really be something of an event if Nikko lost a game. Although she would feel sorry for her friend who lost a bit of money a part of her would always be rooting for those underdogs that he always beat. Shailene laughed lightly at Nikko's shocked expression at the fact that she had read the handbook. She shook her head lightly and pointed to her prefect badge that was always pinned to her robes. "I was sort of expected to." Shailene said. Of course she would need to know every rule down to the comas and periods as to keep order in the school, that was her job after all.
An eyebrow raised slightly at such a remark from Nikko. Not that the idea that he had thought it a loss in him not seeing her undressed bothered her but that was surely a comment she hadn't expected to hear from him. "Why thank you...I guess." She said a bit uncertain. It never crossed her mind that Nikko might like the idea of her being naked, would he find it appealing, was there more to this friendship than she had anticipated? Shailene laughed inwardly, no of course not, even if Nikko had stronger feelings for her she was sure he would speak up about them.

he couldn’t ask to take comfort in more than that. Still, Shailene’s reassurance had been appreciated. When it came to that sort of stuff Nikko preferred to be in blissful denial about even its existence. Having a shrink for a mom meant that he was prone to over analyzing himself and that wasn’t an exception in this case. Nikko figured that it had to do with that black and white way that he viewed the world. Death, and all its amenities, were part of the grey area that Nikko stayed far away from. “You know I just like looking out for ya.” He offered by means of explanation.
Her teasing easily put him make into a playful mood. Fleeting moments of seriousness were really all that Nikko could take. He was immature like that- horrible and unhelpful in a crisis too. All bluster and brawn and little compassion and appeasement didn’t mix well in those scenarios. The notion of a party, even at his expense was fine by Nikko. “And you know I’d be the biggest partier there.” He laughed slipping right back into his comfort zone effortlessly. The rulebook was better used to throw at some jerks head than it was to be helpful during school. Nikko waved the expectation of hers away dismissively. Prefect or not it had been cruel and unusual punishment to make Shailene read that dreaded thing.
The way that she was so… tentative about his comment, and thus her gratitude made Nikko a bit wary. He hadn’t meant to muddle her mind with any confusing thoughts. It was just that he was the flirtatious type and what wasn’t there to be desired about her. She was beautiful, smart, kind, funny, all the things that a person could admire and was deserving of compliments. Nikko was just giving her what she had earned by being as cool as she was. “You’re welcome.” Nikko was nonchalant hoping that if he didn’t make a big deal out of it Shailene wouldn’t be worried about any awkwardness that might have come out of the situation if he was crushing on her, which other than the casual acknowledgment of how great she was, wasn’t the case.
