Kyra walked through the snow and towards the lake. She knew the students would be unhappy having to hold a class out in the December weather, but she felt it was necessary. She had never worked with students before, so this was a new experience. She kept asking herself how she should treat them, what they should be able to get away with, and more. Coming up with the lesson plan for the day had been even harder. Kyra knew not if this would work, but it was worth a try. She would treat this class like an advanced one, as it was just that.
Kyra stood by the lake with an assortment of brooms for those who had not one of their own. Those who did own a broom however, were allowed to bring their own. Her own broom was in her hand. It was an older Firebolt. She loved it for its speed, capable of reaching 150 miles an hour. Of course, Kyra had never pushed it to that limit during a fight, as she knew that the risk was not worth the gain. Waiting for the students to arrive in the field Kyra straightened out her outfit. She was wearing her traditional muggle-wear. Grey sweats tucked into combat boots which were over yoga pants, and a black thermal shirt with a grey hooded vest. The fest had a fake fur trim on the hood-as Kyra refused to buy real fur-and was a zip-up style. Overall a very practical outfit.
As the students started Filing in Kyra waited patiently, hands behind her back and the small, gentle, smile across her face. Right then, she was her sweet innocent self, someone who Certainly didn’t seem capable to control a classroom, let alone fight Death Eaters. That was almost part of Kyra’s camouflage though. Let the enemy underestimate you and you have the upper hand so long as you do not do the same. When at last most of the students seemed to be in place Kyra opened her eyes a little more and spoke. She did need to give an introduction
“Welcome to the advanced flight class. My name is Kyra Jade Clark and I will be teaching this class. Seeing that you’ve signed up for it, I expect you know how to manage a broom fairly well. Now, I have a few expectations and rules I need to get out of the way.” Kyra’s small smile vanished and though her features were still kind she had a small smile on her face. She removed a small folder from under her armpit and held it in front of her. “For those of you who are expecting to sleep through this class, I am sorry to disappoint you. Though there will be no written assignments, I expect you to practice what we learn in class every school day despite the weather. You may be a Quidditch seeker or captain but even for you this class will be a challenge. Trust me, I held those positions and I know for a fact I couldn’t have accomplished what I am about to impose on you without guidance. I ask you devote your attention to me, and obey what I say. This is more for your safety as unlike the beginner class, this one can and will become dangerous.”
Kyra paused for another moment before letting herself continue. “Manny of you probably are wondering: What more is there to know about flying? Tell me something.” Kyra held out her Firebolt after she asked the rhetorical question, “When you look at this broom what do you see? You see an object of sport right? You see a tool for winning house points and beating the competition? That’s good, that’s average. But this broom for others, can be more.” Spinning her Firebolt so it was in a sideways position she continued. “Brooms can be an object of battle and one underestimated. Most of you wouldn’t begin to imagine how hard it is to cast an unforgivable curse while moving through a blizzard at 70 miles an hour, avoiding similar curses from two directions. I know. I’ve done it. At a time like that, its critical you know more than your opponent.”
Kyra brought her broom back to her side, looking over the faces of the class and making eye contact. “You took the basic flying class your first year, but this time it’s different. A combat orientated class that I will teach by example, not book. You will learn things I don’t even know If I should teach you. You will combine what you are learning in your Transfiguration, DADA, and Charms class, and apply it to this broom. If your thinking this is going to be easy. You’re wrong.” The Gentleness from her face was completely gone now. They needed to know that this was not going to be like music class. This was a combat class.
She clapped her hands after a second and pointed to the brooms. “Ok, those of you who do not have brooms I have a lovely selection for you to choose from. Choose one quickly and then I want you to line up in front of me and I’ll explain today’s lesson. If you have any Questions now’s the time to ask them.” She waited for the students to get in line like she directed as she opened the folder and looked over the roster, pairing students up in her head for what was to come next.
