Sam shuffled onto the pitch. It was late afternoon, and the sun was beginning to recede behind the clouds. Broom in hand, he took a deep breath. He wasn't on the Quidditch Team yet, but he still practiced his flying. Lately flying was how he thought about things. He mounted his broom, positioned himself carefully, and then pushed off, placing his feet on the pegs. He shot into the sky, the wind blowing back his shaggy brown hair. There was a cool breeze around him as he slowed down a little.
He thought to himself as he flew. Flying was a good way to think about the things that were bothering you. Something about it was calming, and it seemed to clear his head. Right now his head was clouded with the names of four ladies, all of whom he was dating. Lindsey. She was a pretty redhead who was in Hufflepuff. She was shy, quiet, and quirky. Gretchen, a mocha colored beauty from Gryffindor. She was loud, rambunctious, and always had something to say. Stacy, from Slytherin. He didn't even know why he was dating her, she was just like him. She was dating every boy in Slytherin. He thought for a moment longer. Maybe he'd dump her.... And last but not least, Brittany, from Ravenclaw like himself. She was from the year under him though. And she was book smart, but not guy smart, or relationship smart. None of them compared to one girl who just seemed to have it all going on.
Arianna. He'd noticed this more and more lately. Every time they hung out he found himself putting on his nicer shirts, fixing his hair more, and making sure he smelled like cinnamon. He wasn't sure if she even liked that smelled. But he knew it worked for a lot of other girls. Sam ran a hand through his hair. Why was he even trying? She knew of his player ways, she wouldn't ever fall for him. And he didn't know how to survive with just one relationship. She wouldn't ever trust him. Which made him sad. He honestly thought he was beginning to feel something towards his long time best friend, but he knew that she wouldn't fall for him or ever be interested.
Something on the ground caught his eye. Was it a person? He started to fly down to the ground, when he recognized who it was. He good friend Arianna, who was oblivious to these new found feelings Samael was having. He circled above her for a few seconds, pretending like it was just some maneuvering he was working on. Would she want to see him? Did he smell okay? Was he looking okay? Wait a minute, of course he was, he always did. He grinned and shot down to land next to her, grabbing his broom at the last minute to pull it up, slid off of it, and stand next to her holding it.

The daylight hours were becoming shorter and shorter the closer they got to winter time. It was not late in the day, around five o'clock, an hour before dinner, but it seemed as if it was two hours ahead of that. The sun was slowly sneaking behind the many hills that surrounded the secure location of Hogwarts and the clouds were forming a blanket around the sun lowering it into it's slumber. But the sun would fight against the rest for another hour or so before it gave in. With the spare hour she had free before dinner and her homework completed she decided to go find her best friend Samael who she hadn't spoken to in a few days. The two have been best friends since their first year but it was often that Samael would disappear for a few days on end due to the attention he gave toward the ladies. Arianna was quite aware of his player ways, always having to have multiple girls in his line-up, which is why it confused Arianna when she had such wishes of being one of those girls. Perhaps it was just a silly fantasy but she thought that maybe she could tame the poor boy, that maybe she would be the one who could make him settle down. That was what most girl's intentions were when they tried to be with Samael, other than the obvious fact that he was rather handsome and amusing to be around.
Arianna had gathered word that Samael was out on the Quidditch Pitch, practicing no doubt. He wanted to be on the team but did not seem to be ready skill wise, most likely due to the amount of attention he put on the female gender, as stated before, that he never had enough time to keep up with them, as well as school and quidditch. But she hoped to see Samael on the team at least once before they left Hogwarts in two years. Arianna wasn't much of a fan of the sport, she almost hated the thing, but she was always willing to listen to Samael if he ever wanted to talk about it.
Making her way to the pitch, dressed in a light blue skirt and white blouse, with a pair of black ballet flats, she had changed out of her robes before coming outside. She saw Samael zooming through the air as she walked up the pitch. She watch him losing herself in his moments. "Get your arse down here Samael!" She said laughing.
Her head was bent slightly upward, watching as he flew over her. "Show off." She joked as his dismount was pretty good. "Where are those lovely flocks of girls that I so dearly miss?" She asked before giving him a hug. "They need to stop taking you away for me or else there is going to be a problem." She said grinning.

Sam hugged her back, enjoying how comfortable she felt against him. He felt some heat rise to his cheeks at that thought and quickly pulled away. His left hand gripped his broom stick. Clearing his throat, he smiled down at her. She always had a way with words. She wondered where Sam's little gaggle of girls were, considering they usually followed him everywhere. And not one of them knew he was dating them all. He was a dating master. But as of late, he was losing interest in all of them, and his attention was focusing on the one girl who couldn't be clearer about how she felt about him.
Arianna always made it known that they were friends. She knew about his player ways, and this had probably made it easier for her to ignore his charm. She was probably wise to his game, especially now after five years of perfecting it. Which made it harder not to want her. He scooted back onto his broom and looked down at her while he hovered. "Well lovey, my little gaggle of girls are all distracted right now. I have all my undivided attention on you," he said, smiling down at her. He flew around her slowly, his bright blue eyes looking into hers.
He flew a little higher, properly mounted the broom, and reached a hand down to her. His mouth turned up in a small smile, beckoning her to join him. As soon as her hand touched his he pulled her onto his broom, to sit side saddle in front of him. He laughed and took of slowly, gibing her time to say no instead of flying. He knew that she didn't really enjoy it, but maybe flying with him would change her mind. Sam wrapped a strong arm around her waist to help her stay steady and not fall off.
"Want to take a leisurely flight around the pitch deary, and enjoy the sunset?" he asked, whispering in her ear. Most of the time his charms didn't work on her. But something in his stomach said, GO FOR IT! She was particularly stunning today, wearing the skirt and blouse combo. Even her little black shoes were cute. Sam smiled into the light breeze they created by flying slowly through the air. An old Irish song came to mind, and he hummed it quietly while flying with her.

There was a light squishing sound as Arianna walked across the pitch the rain from the previous day had not all been soaked up by the ground. As she stood there looking up at Samael her ballet flats were getting a bit wet. The wetness didn't bother her since it was unaccompanied by mud. Arianna hated getting dirty, one of the reason's why she disliked herbology class as well as sports. A proper princess did not play in the dirt it was not a classy look. It was not long after Samael had touched the ground that Arianna was wrapped in her best friend's arms. But the embrace did not last so long and Arianna felt cold without his touch. She tried to ignore that chilly air that caressed her skin.
The pack of girls that followed Samael around, most of whom were dating him at the same time completely unaware, had been relentless lately. It had been days since Arianna could properly interact with her dearest friend. But tonight, it seemed, that he was completely free since all the other girls on his list seemed to be busy. "Ah, so when the other girls are off with someone else I am your choice in company. I See." She said frowning slightly. Arianna did not like the feeling of being last on Samael's list, only used when none of the others were available to him. There was a time that she had been the top most priority in his life but then those bloody hormones had kicked in for him and pushed to the bottom of the barrel she was. Best friends endured these types of things no matter their secret feelings. In order to pay him back for slighting her feelings Arianna said. "So you aren't worried about any of your girls spending their evening in the arms of another man? It seemed that Brittany was getting mighty cozy with David in the common room." Arianna lied, but it was just a playful one that wouldn't do much harm especially since Samael didn't have feelings for any of these girls just wanted to collect them all.
Samael was on his broom sort of hovering above Arianna now. "Do not tease me Mr. Salvador. Get down here." She said placing her hands on her hip. Samael then reached a hand out to her and Arianna thinking that he wanted help down grabbed a hold of it. A silly mistake for a Ravenclaw who disliked flying. Samael pulled her up onto the broom. She closed her eyes, gripping his arms really tight. "Don't look down, just don't look down." She said over and over to herself.
His warm breath tickled her ear as the words he spoke almost sounded intriguing enough not to ask to be put down on solid ground. "Only for a moment." She said, her voice shaky and her eyes still shut tight. With Samael's strong arms holding her in place she felt oddly secure as a melody she didn't really recognize hit her ears. Samael was humming, whether to her or not, it was a lovely sound. She began to relax a bit within his grip but still too terrified to peak even just a sliver.

Sam smiled as her soft hand held onto his and he pulled her up into his broom. She was clearly not impressed that he'd pulled her up onto his broom. But she sat there, still as a statue, eyes squeezed shut. He just smiled and continued to hum his Irish tune. He thought about singing it to her aloud, but thought better of it. Too weird. Too random. And he wanted her to continue to like him.
She said she would be willing to fly around for just a moment, and he could hear her talking to herself, saying don't look down. He grinned, his blue eyes looking down at her. He stopped humming and reached a hand up to push away some hair from her eyes. "There's nothing to be afraid of lass," he said, feeling her relax while still in his arms. He slowed the broom to a crawl, something it wasn't really meant to do. it was meant to go fast. But it was fine.
Sam let one of his arms drop down to hold the broom, the other resting on her back to steady her. He didn't want her falling off now did he? He hummed his song again, picking it back up. He figured it could help her relax better, and faster.
"Oh blow the winds o'er the ocean And blow the winds o'er the sea Oh blow the winds o'er the ocean And bring back my Bonnie to me" he sang aloud this time, his voice low and deep, yet rich. He had always prided himself on his singing, and he didn't sing for just anyone. He only sang for special people, like his mum. Nobody else had ever heard him.
Sam gazed out to the beautiful sunset in front of him. The sky was a mix of purples, reds, and oranges. It was amazing. The sun was just setting, its large orb starting to sink beyond the horizon. "You should open your eyes now Arianna," he said, "the view is amazing."

The feeling of the wind blowing through her long blond locks and over her body would of been a pleasant feeling if Arianna's feet were firmly placed on the ground. But instead they dangled in mid air where the terrified Ravenclaw sat on a thin piece of wood called a broom handle. Surely this defied all physics but so did the fact that she was a witch. Neither thought helped ease the shakiness in her body. All Arianna could see was herself falling from the broom and tumbling toward the ground, thankfully her eyes were still shut so she couldn't see how high she was.
The only comforting thing that was helping Arianna not to go into hysteria was the fact that her best friend was sitting right behind her. Samael had her in his arms and slowed the broom down to a small crawl, almost hover, to help her calm down. Arianna clung to his strong arm, afraid to let go. But slowly she had begun to relax as she listened to him hum. "Falling isn't something to be afraid of?" She asked, almost snapped. But she knew Samael had not meant it in a teasing way, he was only trying to comfort her.
The two rode in silence for a few minutes before a new sound caught her attention. Samael was singing and it was beautiful. Although she did not like the sound of wind blowing for all she could picture was the wind spinning them out of control she listened to Samael sing. She had never known he had such an amazing voice. Arianna hummed along with the melody for a bit of time. "Samael, why have you kept that song-bird voice from me?" She asked wanting nothing more to turn around and give him one of her stern looks but would not risk such a task on a broom.
The entire time Arianna's eyes had been closed, no one could pry them open. She was not going to look about and see how unnaturally high they were. Surely she would scream. Although she was more calm than she had ever been on a broom, Arianna didn't want to get started up again. But Samael was telling her to open her eyes to see the view. "I'm sure I don't want to see this view from this high up." She said stubbornly. But slowly she began to open her eyes. After all Samael had just given her the gift of hearing his voice, so she would pay him back by enjoying this ride with him as much as possible. Who knew when she would see him again?
"Oh my!" She gasped. The sun was setting and a masterpiece was being painted before their eyes. Shades of blue, purple, orange, pink were sprayed across the sky. "Oh Samael...this is so beautiful." She said as her eyes were fixed open loving the view.

He continued to sing his song, sometimes switching back and forth between the old Irish language and English. Sam really enjoyed singing, especially for her, but it occurred to him that he hadn't sung in front of anyone before, not even Arianna. His heart beat fast, his blood coursed through his veins. He hadn't ever felt this way before. What was taking over him? Sam gripped her closer to him. He felt as if touching her was something new, something that he'd never done before. When in fact he'd touched her many times over the years, through various high fives, hugs, and tackles.
She almost snapped at him, mimicking his words of being not afraid to fall. He just smiled and continued to sing. His words crooned out of his mouth, sliding in the air around them, hanging there. Her blonde hair blew softly in the wind, sending the scent of it into his face, where he quietly enjoyed the scent of it. He'd never noticed before how nice she smelled! "Oh cut it out lovey," he said, rolling his eyes even though she couldn't see, "You would LOVE the view." Sam didn't know quite how to answer her question of where he'd been keeping that voice of his for so long. He honestly hadn't ever thought to sing to her, or anyone else for that matter. He didn't even sing to his lady friends!
Once his song was finished, he could feel her loosening up. And finally she opened her eyes. He could tell, because her disposition changed automatically. She gasped and murmured something, something he had to listen carefully to catch. "What was that love? Are you saying I was right?" he joked. He knew that she was really stunned with the sunset, the brilliant hues of gold, red, orange, and yellow being thrown across the sky. Somewhat tired of flying, and having just fulfilled his mission for the night (to get her to enjoy this flight), Sam started to land the broom, going in for a soft landing. Once hovering just above the ground, he helped her off the broom and set it on the ground. Sitting atop a large hill just outside the Quidditch stadium, Sam crossed his legs and leaned back on his arms.
He patted the ground next to him, happy to be sitting on the comfortable grass once more. He protruded his wand from his jeans, waved it, and waited a few seconds. A large blanket flew towards them, and he stood up to catch it. Spreading it out on the ground, he got all the kinks out of it and laid back down, his arms behind his head now. He now had the perfect view for looking at the stars after the sunset. "Arianna dear, won't you join me?" The sunset had only a few more minutes before the sun dipped behind the horizon, and the moon came out. He could already see some stars glittering up there. He'd done this almost every night for as long as he could remember.
Sam turned his head to look at Arianna. Her blue eyes were startling, and he noticed for the first time that her's were almost as intense as his. A perfect match. Smiling at her, he waited for her to lay down next to him. They could star gaze and talk about their lives together here, away from the crowd of girls, away from the thoughts of school. Just two best friends here, just two best friends baring their souls together.

In all Arianna's life she had never imagined herself on a broom. The height and unstableness of it all frightened her to death. But now she was soaring, well more like gliding, through the air in the arms of her best friends who she felt a bit more than friendship for at this point in time in her life. Arianna wasn't a fool she knew Samael played games with girls hearts not really caring if he heart them. That also frightened Arianna but not enough to put a stop to the thoughts running through her mind. She felt secure in her arms, her heart raced beneath her chest due to their contact. She relished in it for she knew after tonight Samael was most likely to disappear for a week or more to spend some time with her the many girls he called his.
The thought saddened her but she tried to push it away and enjoy the moments she had with Samael. She hoped that one day he would realize the perfect girl was right in front of his eyes, but sometimes Samael was one the most oblivious Ravenclaws but clearly he was intelligent. Arianna doubted an idiot could keep four girls from different houses within the same school a secret from each other. Arianna had to admit Samael had some skill. Although Arianna would help him out whenever a girl had doubts about him they would seek her out knowing she was his best friend and as a best friend's duty was she always kept her mouth shut and assured the girl that she was the only one in his life.
Samael pulled her closer to him and she snuggled into him a bit more. She lightly hit his arm before saying "Samael it snot polite to tease." She said jokingly. The two always played around with each other, it kept their friendship fresh and fun. Arianna was actually enjoying the ride the more Samael sang and hum. It calmed her nerves and made her feel safe. Soon Arianna gave in and opened her eyes to the glorious view. "Maybe you were right...this one time." Arianna said with a small smirk on her face.
Soon the broom was heading down toward the grown at a slow pace but it still made Arianna tense up who closed her eyes immediately. She did not want to see the ground coming closer and closer to their faces. Finally Arianna was being helped off the broom and she dramatically fell to her knees and kissed the grass. "I've missed you dear solid ground." She said laughing as she stood back up and dust the dirt off her.
Arianna stood there on the hill as Samael was setting up a nice little blanket for them to lay on. She wondered if this was how he treated his girls because this had truly been a romantic evening. Flying on a broom to watch the sunset and now to lay on the ground and watch the stars. If this was how Samael treated a friend she wondered how he wooed his girls. Or maybe this was just practice for a date he was planning to take another girl on, but she tried not to think that way. She doubted that Samael would use her in such a way.
Arianna walked over to the blanket and laid down beside Samael, their hands just barely brushing each other. "This is quite pleasant." She said turning her head to look over at Samael who seemed to look more handsome under the dark hues of the sunset and light glow of the stars. "So how long will it be before I see you again?" She asked Samael as she let out a small sigh.

Sam laughed as she kissed the ground, proclaiming how much she'd missed it. Rolling his eyes, he patted the blanket again, wanting her to sit down next to him. The sunset was officially over, and it was star gazing time. She finally joined him, laying so close that he could feel her body heat, her hand just a hairs breath from his. His fingers itched to reach out and grab it. "Only pleasant?" he drawled in his Irish accent, raising his eyebrows. He rolled to his side, leaning on his arm, his head in his hand. He watched her, studied her, for a few seconds. "How could I make it better, lass" he said, winking. That was his nickname for her and only her. It wasn't much of one, but he liked using it just with her.
He though of his rove of giggling girlfriends, and flopped back down on his back, the air whooshing out his lungs. To be honest, he hadn't even been thinking of them all night. He had his full attention on her. He honestly didn't really care where they were right now, he just wanted to have a good time with his best friend. He raised a leg to bend it underneath him, his knee pointing at the stars. Placing one arm behind his head, he tried thinking of the best answer for her. "Probably off gossiping and telling their friends all about me," he muttered, rolling his eyes again. He got kind of tired of hearing all these stories about himself. What if he wanted to just once go down the halls without a pat on the back from an approving guy, or a high five from a wanna be player?
Sam turned his head to look at her, his eyes boring into hers. She was so pretty underneath this moon light. The stars were reflected in her eyes, making them look big and beautiful. He smiled softly. "Why, you'll see me again in the morning, when I take you out for breakfast," he said sweetly, his smile reaching his eyes. "Or rather when you join me in the Great Hall and we dine together," he added, trying to joke about it. He could hear the sadness in her voice though. He knew as of late that he'd been with his girlfriends so much that he was kind of abandoning Arianna, and it made his heart hurt to think he was doing such a thing. She was his best friend, and in the past few days he'd begun to think of her as more. But she would never fall for any of his tricks, any of his charms. She knew him too well. He didn't know why he was dwelling on such thoughts when he was here in the present. Maybe these feelings would leave?
But as he looked at her sad face, and felt her emotions, he reached out his hand to hold hers, his large on encompassing her smaller one. "I'm sorry for leaving so often. I promise, anytime that you need me, I'll be there. I will come running." His voice was sincere, his heart out on the line. She might think he was joking, but he really wanted her to know that this friendship meant everything to him.

The sun had finally fallen behind the mountain tops that surrounded the Hogwarts grounds. The only light around was the soft glow of the twinkling stars and moon that hung above the two friends that laid on a blanket side by side. Arianna was well aware of how close Samael was to her it was practically the only thing she could focus on. But being raised in a royal family Arianna could easily hide her true emotions and always act in a poise matter. Samael turned on his side to face her and Arianna simply moved her head to the side to look at him. Her blue eyes studied his face trying to remember every detail of this night. "You don't need to do anything Samael, being here with you, having this bit of time for the two of us is enough to make this night amazing." Arianna said with a small smile. After her words registered in her mind she realize that it had sounded like it came from a place much more than friendship but hopefully Samael wouldn't be able to pick up on it.
Arianna returned her gaze toward the blackened sky trying to gather her thoughts that kept wanting to run wild with the idea of Samael and herself together and happy. She was perfectly happy in this moment now, there was no need to intensify issues with the risk that always came with friends who dated. What if it never worked out and their friendship was shattered because Samael played her like those others girls he was currently with. Arianna wouldn't know how to handle it and right now it just wasn't worth the risk, she wanted her friendship with Samael to last. He was, after all, her best friend the only person that really understood her. "Isn't that why you date them all? To get your name out and receive praise for the things you do." Arianna asked bitterness lacing her words. "But if they do gossip I think that might just get you caught." Arianna added. Although she wanted Samael to be free of his four current girlfriends she didn't want to see all of them come after him for what he did. She shook her head lightly at the potential mess of it all.
Now facing Samael after her last remark, her eyes swimming in his, she couldn't help but push back all those feelings of worry and sadness when Samael let her know she would be seeing him again very soon. It was rare that the two would be able to eat together because Samael was either getting flocked by females who wanted him or guys who wanted to be like him. Sometimes Arianna felt there was no room for their friendship anymore but Samael was proving her wrong. "Thats my favorite place." She said with a bright smile playing along with the small joke. She honestly didn't care where they went as long as she had some time with him. Their time together always seemed to vanish so quickly and then he was off with one of his girls leaving Arianna to fend for herself but she tried not to complain too much and allowed Samael to do as he pleased. So whenever nights like these appeared she held on to them dearly.
Arianna had long since turned her face toward the sky once more. She was trying to place all the constellations they learned about in Astronomy class when suddenly a star went soaring across the sky. She closed her eyes right and wished hard that somehow Samael and herself would be able to work things out and be together. Letting out a small breath she opened her eyes to find the sky darker than it had been a moment ago, the shooting star was gone. Arianna could feel a pair of eyes on her, Samael must be watching her. Suddenly a warm hand took hold of her small, delicate one. The roughness of his hand felt comforting against her smooth one. She looked over at him with a small smile and simply said "I hope so.", before adverting her eyes back to the sky.

Sam watched her close her eyes tight, wishing on that shooting star. He wanted to kiss her then. Her innocence was so amazing to him. He closed his own eyes and made a wish. Please, if there is a god, let Arianna and I be together," he wished, his heart pouring into the wish. He focused his mind on her smile earlier, when he told her they'd be going to breakfast together. Her smile would be forever embedded into his brain, and he smiled back. Opening his eyes, he saw her staring up at the stars.
"I really mean it Ari. I won't leave again. I promise. And if I do, strike me down with lightning!" He raised his arms into the sky, one hand still holding onto hers. His booming laugh echoed in the night, his eyes glinting with reflections of the stars in them. Turning his head to look at her, he watched her for a moment, studying her. She was so beautiful, with her blonde curls spread around her, and her pale skin shimmering in the moonlight.
"I know I must have hurt you, pulling away like I have. I'm so sorry," he said, his head rolling back to stare up at the sky too. "Sometimes its hard to remember that I have someone who actually likes me for me. I just get so caught up in it all sometimes, in what people expect of me. When you're around, it all makes sense. I know who I am. And what I want." Sam blushed a little, but nobody would be able to tell in the dark. He wasn't supposed to be bearing his soul to her! He was a guy! He should be trying to take advantage of her right now! No, stop! Arianna was his best friend, and possibly the love of his life. He couldn't think of her like that. He had to treat her with the most respect.
"Well I'm glad that its your favorite place, because from now on, every morning we will have breakfast in there. A new tradition for us!" Sam smiled, his hand tightening around her's, glad to be still holding it. It must mean something, if she hadn't pulled her hand away yet, right? Or maybe she was just comfortable enough with him being her best friend to hold his hand. Samael frowned a little, hoping that wasn't the case.

When Arianna opened her eyes after the flash of the shooting star had faded she glanced over at Samael who seemed to be doing exactly the same thing. Apart of her was extremely curious as to what he wished for or perhaps he had simply just closed his eyes without taking notice of the star that left a faint streak in the sky. But being raised to cherish one's privacy she wouldn't ask someone to share something that hadn't hinted or drew attention to themselves.
It shocked the blonde hair girl to see Samael have such a flair for the dramatics but it amused her to no end. Arianna giggled at him, but it wasn't her natural one. It sounded more of a school-girlish laugh, the type girls used around guys they liked. She blushed as she noticed this and was almost mortified. Usually being so comfortable around Samael never would have granted her to laugh in such an manner. Was the line between friendship and relationship becoming blurry? Arianna hoped not for she didn't want to embarrass herself by exposing feelings that Samael seemed incapable of returning. "Even if you couldn't keep your promise I wouldn't want you to be struck with lightening for that would demolish any future chance that you might hold to your words." Arianna said as she reached up and placed a hand on Samael's shoulder to rein him back down onto the blanket they shared.
The mood between the two seemed to be turning in a more emotional direction. Maybe the times were changing and Samael would be by her side again instead of chasing tail. "Samael, I forgive you. No need to constantly pour it all out to me. I know it wasn't intentional but your horrible teenaged boyish hormones were bound to screw us over eventually." She said laughing lightly at her own statement as well as her use of an improper word. Arianna had learned to not speak in such descriptive dialect that her parents would disapprove of. "But who honestly expects you to date more than one girl at once? Surely I don't and I'd be so bold as to say your parents wouldn't either. Why do the opinions of others affect you so?" Arianna asked turning her blue eyes on him.
Smiling lightly Arianna looked at him. "Now don't go making promises you can't keep because at this rate you might be struck twice with lightening and its highly unlikely that you can survive both hits." Arianna teased him.
