A long, long time ago, in a land far, far away....By the Black Lake, Atticus calmly awaited the arrival of his NEWT students, whom he had warned yesterday in class that he would be doing so. He had told them to dress warmly, because it was indeed winter and there was a lot of snow on the ground. Usually, he liked to keep his lesson plans a surprise, but in certain cases he’d give hints as to what they were going to do, to see if any of them would guess and come prepared or not. Or, in this case, he needed them to be prepared. He hadn’t told them what they were learning, or what they were going to do outside besides freeze their butts off if they didn’t get this right. He was hoping, strongly in the back of his mind, that he hadn’t made a bad decision in letting them out of their uniforms; but it was their last class with him before the holidays after all, and he was trying to make it their best one yet, having them comfortable and in their own clothes would make it better for them. Besides, he wouldn’t want to be one of the girls stuck outside in their uniform skirts.
Of course, it wouldn’t be hard. What self-respecting teenager didn’t like playing with a little fire? When he had learned this spell, Atticus remembered the entirety of his class being completely entranced in their teacher, and the mastery with which he preformed it. For a while after that, his classes seemed lacklustre, and didn’t appeal as much as that one had, which was why Atticus decided to teach the Fiendfyre spell during the last lesson of the year, technically, before the students went for their Christmas break. It would make an impact, he was sure, and he hoped it would incite them to be a little more enthusiastic to come back to school, if their last class ended with a bang.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw students walking around the grounds, those who didn’t have anywhere to be during the last period, and a few that were heading over, some of the NEWT students from his class. He couldn’t help but grin behind the wide collar of his warm coat. Boy, were they in for a surprise.

Cupping his hands to his mouth, Cade blew the warm air on them in an attempt to warm his hands up before they fell off. He had lef his gloves in the common room of the gryffindor tower that morning, and he hadnt had a chance to go back and get them, or he would have been late for class, and being a preftect and showing up late to class didnt really show a good example to the younger kids did it. He pulled the black sweater closer as he walked down to the lake, kinda rgetretting not wearing warmer clothes, but he honestly hadnt though it was as cold outside and he was just going to have to live with it today. He had done it, wasnt like he could turn around and blame someone else for it. No he would just have to suck it up. Blowing the warm air on his hands again he looked around and saw where the class was being held.
Or so he thought anyway. The proffesor was standing there, so he was assuming thats where he had to go. He rubbed his hands together and shoed them into the pockets of his sweater and he crunched through the snow, his feet sinking slightly as he walked through the white blanket that covered the ground. He moved to run a hand through his hair and he shivered sightly as he stopped a bit away from the teacher of the class. He grinned slightly, shaking his head and he looked at proffesor beaumont. "Morning Sir" He said, tyring to be cheery even though he was kinda freezing his but of. He shook his head and looks at him again. "Please tell me were out here because we're using something like fire?" . . He had already guessed that, what other reason would there be for them being outside, and he grinned slightly.

Ah, finally! Poppy inhaled a deep breath of cool, fresh air as she stepped outside of the castle. It felt so good to be outside after being cooped up inside for so long. Poppy had never done well being contained in small spaces. It wasn’t that she was claustrophobic; she just had too much energy to be forced between four walls. She became quite the nuisance in the winter months, always running around the hallways and practically bouncing off the walls. She needed open space; she needed to be able to run when she needed to burn off sugar. She needed to be able to twirl around and not worry about hitting people. She needed fresh air, the sun on her face, the breeze against her skin... not that she had anything against winter, it was very pretty, but outside seemed to be mostly off limits most days; she was apt at getting sick and was effected easily by the cold as small as her body was.
Laughing, Poppy had to practically hop up and down to get her feet out of the blanket of snow that covered the ground, her brown curls bouncing under her beanie as she did so. Winter could be just as fun as summer, as long as she was bundled up in layers as she was now. She had chosen her thickest tights and warmest skirt, and Professor Beaumont had said that they’d be warm if they performed the lesson correctly. She was glad too, because down by the lake there was a brisk breeze coming from the water, succeeding in giving her a slight chill that passed quickly.
Exuberantly, Poppy joined the only other student who had arrived, and paused. “We’re doing what?” she asked, eyes wide, breath cut short, grin wiped off her face quite quickly.

Post by JAMES SIRIUS POTTER on Sept 17, 2011 13:48:24 GMT -6
James didn't even care what he wore right now, all he knew is that his Gryffindor sweater was covering his clothing underneath but he also had a slight jacket on to give him that edge in this competition, but was amazed that they were outside. Oh goody, extra-curricular activities and bonus house points for them, woohoo. Glad that he had gotten his pants on right today and they were rather loose on him, yet stayed up far enough he wasn't trying to pull them up all the time. Now looked over at the other two contestants, as he saw them, just lounging about as one looked excited as the other didn't. James merely laughed a little at this, but he figured that his competition was indeed going to be bit tougher this time.
Especially when he glanced over at Cade Wood, a fellow Gryffindor, and one that wasn't partial to taking to what they both were going to be doing. James perked up when he heard something about fire, and was merely intrigued by this. Secretly he just wanted to show everyone up so that he could prove to them just how awesome he really was as he tugged on his black silk gloves that were able to hold his wand easily too. James hated being cold and so cast a warming charm on himself at the same time. Whatever was required of him he was ready to study hard for this requirement and then merely waved to the others. "Sounds like fun to me," he merely said to them...ready to show off.

Shailene's lesson on Mimbulus Mimbletonia had just concluded in the Green House. There wasn't much time before she was suppose to meet Professor Beaumont for Defense Against the Dark Arts class which would be taking place by the black lake. With this in mind, Shailene knew she wouldn't have enough time to rush her plant upstairs, the one she would be taking care of for the rest of the year, so she asked Professor Longbottom if she could leave it here until her class with Professor Beaumont was over. After gaining his permission she quickly stashed her plant that was marked with her name in the back and made her way over to the frozen lake.
It was freezing out but Shailene had already been prepared for the bone chilling weather seeing as she had to venture outside in order to attend her Herebology class. But unlike most of her other students she was practically in her school uniform because the no uniform rule did not apply to Herebology. Her robes were made of a warmer material for the winter months, So she didn't feel that cold. Her hair was worn in low pig tails beneath a yellow wool hat and her hands were protected by gloves.
As she joined the rest of her classmates that had already arrived, Shailene looked over at her brother who was shivering. "Forgot your gloves didn't you?" Shailene asked looking at his hands that were hidden in his pockets. Shailene took a minute to dig through her polka dotted bag and pulled out an extra pair of gloves, handing them to her brother. "Here, so mom won't have to worry about you getting your hands chopped off due to frost bite." Shailene said, smiling lightly at her forgetful brother. It seemed lately the two hardly ever saw each other, she had no idea what was going on in his life and lately she had been hearing rumors about him and some girl but she didn't want to believe them until she heard it from Cade himself.

Winter was surely upon them but that wouldn't stop Zmeyette dressing as alluring as possible, especially when uniforms were abandoned for this lesson of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Zmeyette were a pair of grey skinny jean, which she paired underneath with leggings to keep her legs warm. A snug dark green sweater paired with a cropped blazer with three quarter length sleeves. With werewolf blood running through her body Zmeyette didn't need to dress as warmly as the others when it came to the winter months, she naturally had a warm body. With a pair of grey gloves on her hands, Zmeyette strolled outside and onto the grounds. She headed to the lake where Professor Beaumont had informed them to meet next class. She wondered what exactly would they be going outside for, she was rather curious about today's lesson.
When Zmeyette arrived there were a few students handing around but she was the only Slytherin and none of the others she liked in the least bit. Zmeyette shoved her hands in her pocked and waited until the professor announced what they would be doing for the lesson.

Atticus was pleasantly surprised that the first student to make an appearance had guessed correctly what they were going to be learning about. Althought Mister Wood had probably guessed so due to the chill he was feeling, Atticus was impressed nonetheless. Hopefully, the rest of the students would understand the hints too. This didn't seem to be the case with Miss Longbottom, who came right on the young boy's heels. "Yes, it will be fire today Mister Wood," he said with finality in his voice. He took note of Poppy Longbottom's frightened expression.
"It will be fun, Mister Potter," he said when the young man offered his imput after arriving shortly after the other two. "But," he gave James a hard stare. "I will be closely controlling this lesson carefully, so no funny business." He knew James Potter quite well, and he knew that giving teenagers free reign over a rather dangerous type of fire wasn't a safe idea, but Atticus was confident in his ability to control anything lest it get out of hand, that he wasn't worried about anything happening. He wouldn't, after all, ever put his students in danger. Though the young Longbottom girl seemed to be doubting his control.
"Fiendfyre is not a spell that should be taken lightly," he said, subtly beginning his lesson regardless of the lack of students. He wasn't surprised that many had decided to skip; it was the last day before Christmas vacation after all. Even he didn't want to be stuck in classes all day, but he had a job to do. "I'm sure you're all familiar with the spell, at least in theory. Today, you'll be learning to create the illusive fire."

Cade rolled his eyes slightly as he heard James Potter talk about the day being fun. Cade honestly, didnt like the older potter boy, he was far to cocky and in Cade's view he needed to be taken down a peg or too. He pulled his hand out of his pocket and he raked it through his sandy blond hair as his sister came up next to him and e grin spread across his face. "No . . I didnt forget them . . . they jumped out of my bag . . in the common room . . " He said, with the grin still spread on his face as he eyed the gloves she had pulled out of her bag. "If they have hufflepuff colors on them . . " He said jokingly, he wasnt really one for house rivalry, if someone was in a diffrent house so what? It didnt make them anyless than him.
He took the gloves off his sidter and he grinned, pulling them onto his hands and flexing his fingers to help unfreeze them he turned to his sister and he nodded slightly. "Oh . . after class . . i have to talk to you" He said softly, hoping no one else could hear. Oh he knew about the rumors going round about him and Phenix Wulfe, and well most of them were true, but some of them had made Cade laugh. He shook his head slightly and looked at the proffesor as he started talking and he nodded slightly. He had read about what they were going to be using, but he had never had the chance to use it, he figured it would be to dangerous to use while he was still learning, so this was a great chance. He kept his eyes n the proffesor, listning to what he said and he tried to remeber everything he had read. He spoke up his query, just curious, yeah it was taking it back to the basics he always did when learning a new spell, the more you knew the better you could cast, though, he wasnt really a fan of dark magic. "Sorry proffesor . . . loosly related question . . Ashwinders . . they can be made from Fiendfyre . . can they not?" He said, looking at proffesor beaumont. He had read about them before, and been curious, and who better to ask than the D.A.D.A teacher.

Well, this wasn’t going to be pleasant, she decided as soon as the professor confirmed Cade’s suspicion. While everyone else had probably been thinking the same, Poppy had been wondering if they were going to make snow angels, and snowmen, build snow forts and have a snowball fight. She wasn’t sure how that related to Defence Against the Dark Arts, but she was sure that Professor Beaumont could come up with something. He always had interesting lessons and creative assignments. Her way of thinking was a little naive, but she could always hope, couldn’t she? Maybe they’d have to magically enhance their forts and use magic to defend themselves or use it in offensive moves... No, that didn’t make much sense, though the more she thought about it, the more interesting it was. But no, they had to be learning Fiendfyre. Fire. The thought alone made Poppy shiver.
“Uhm... Professor?” she said, moving a little closer to him, and waving to Shailene as she appeared and gave her brother an extra pair of gloves. If she had to actually participate in this lesson, she was fairly sure she’d have a heart attack. Observing she could do, as long as she was far, far away from where the flames actually were, or hiding safely behind Professor Beaumont in case something happened. “I have a, uhmm,” she paused and blushed. For someone who worked regularly in a kitchen, she had a rather odd fear of fire, though at the Cauldron their burners were now covered completely, and at home too, here at school she mostly did baking and didn’t have to worry about it. “I have a phobia of fire,” she explained softly, looking down and kicking snow with her feet, clearly feeling much more meek than usual.

Vasilisa sauntered up to the group of students gathered around the black lake. In their previous lesson of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Beaumont stated that this was the destination for their next class. She could see the handsome professor standing at the forefront of the pack. The grass beneath her feet crunched with each step due to his semi-frozen state. The weather had grown colder quite quickly. Vasilisa wore a black double button pea coat that was keeping her rather toasty. Her jeans snugly fit her and were tucked into a pair of grey wool boots. A pair of grey gloves protected her hands and a wool hat sat cozily upon her head, her blonde locks falling onto her shoulders from beneath the hat.
Upon reaching her fellow classmates she heard the professor speak of fire which automatically got her attention. Although she might be considered late since the professor was describing what was going on for today's lesson it wasn't of much importance to Vasilisa. At least she had shown up and well Vasilisa was happy that she had decided not to skip this class. Fire was always exciting.

The sound of shuffling feet woke Ethan who had slept in not really needing to bother with the morning ritual of waking up with the sun and rushing down to breakfast. His stomach would hold until after his Defense Against the Dark Arts class which he was apparently running late for. But Ethan wasn't the type to rush off to class so he didn't hastily throw the covers off him and grab whatever clothes were lying around. He took his time in getting himself ready for the day. After dressing himself in a casual manner Ethan sat back on his bed to pull on his combat like boots. He ran a hand through his hair sighing lightly. It seemed like such an effort to go on with his everyday life, but he did it for Amara every step was for her. Although he wasn't making the best choices with his life at least he was still living, or partially living.
Ethan gathered his books in his bag and walked out of the Slytherin dorms and common rooms and headed up to the main entrance. Exiting the castle he walked in the direction of the black lake arriving just in time to hear that they would be working with fire which Ethan found quite interesting. Maybe this will be a lesson he excelled at.

James was not too terrified of fire, but after hearing that Poppy had a phobia of it almost made him sneer in laughter. No, that wouldn't be right, but he heard the professor mentioning something about nothing funny happening, but that was the point of this wasn't it? James was having an image of a clown running on fire around him made purely of fire to make it clearly ironic that such a feat was impossible although usually the fire took on forms of beasts with a sentient form. If it got out of hand, surely Atticus would be able to put out the fires. Fiendfyre, and he had just completed an essay on the strange curse. Yes, he knew how it worked, and had never really practiced it in class before. Outside of class a few times, but he made sure the area was controlled with the fire he had used.
Yes, he was still incredibly rusty and practice did indeed make perfect. James's favorite creature to create was a dragon, with wings that soared high above the sky, but all he had to do was imagine it as his eyes seemed to hold a fiery aura to them. Very eager to start this lesson and get on with it as he soon looked at his other competitors. Too many useless people that would hold him back if they had to team up with someone, but James thought he had an advantage over most of them. Poppy's fear of fire was at least helpful to him, and hoped he would win the prize for this class at least.
The dislike of the said Potter was brought back two times as he glanced over at Cade for a moment, merely just pushing up his nose at him for a moment or two. Wasn't even worth his time for a second glance, and then looked back to the professor procuring an innocent enough smile that could have been mistaken for a sneer. "Whatever are you talking about professor? There will -never- be any funny business from anyone here, I don't think, especially not from -me-" he said, chuckling softly. Readying his wand to test the air as he did indeed cast a small fire spell that landed on the ground to melt the snow. It was just a quick Incendio near his own feet so that he wasn't standing in snow for much longer. Making sure the ground below him was clear for standing perfectly nice, and if anyone dared alter that he would hex them into next Monday despite the teacher's warning.

Normally she would just not show up if she was going to be late. She wanted to make it to that lesson however. She figured it was going to be interesting since the professor was having the class outside. There was also the fact that just about all of the professor's classes were interesting. Alaya quickly dressed for the cold weather. She didn't need much but she hated being just a little cold, so if she was over heated from the coat and what not she wouldn't mind. She like the warmth and she was really thankful for being a werewolf in the winter because during the full moon her coat kept her very warm.
She was silent in her walking as she approached the class that was standing in a group by the lake. She stayed near the back, listening carefully as to catch up on what she missed in the few minuets. She heard the word Fiendfyre and her eyes lit up. Learning dangerous and powerful spells was something to look forward to. She was keen on learning such spells even if they would backfire half the time. She had tried once to produce a Patronus Charm but that ended badly. Learning the spell was the fun part. She hoped that the more destructive Fiendfyre would be a bit better to work with.

Cade being his usual self had brought a smile to Shailene's face. She had missed her brother dearly and it bothered her that they hardly ever saw each other this year. Partly because of her devotion to her studies as well as Cade's social life. "Yes, the magical jumping gloves, who would of thought?" She said sarcastically as she held the gloves out for him to wear. "Hush up, Cade and put them on before I change my mind." Shailene added with mock crossness. The gloves were a basic black color she needn't have everything in her house colors even though she was quite proud of being a Hufflepuff.
Shailene watched as Cade put the gloves on, enjoying the warmth they brought. "Maybe I should put a sticking charm on them so these don't just jump off and leave you frozen." She teased, smiling up at her older brother. Next Cade said that they needed to speak after class which Shailene was intrigued by. "Alright. Is anything wrong?" She asked unable to hide the worry from her voice.
Shailene placed her bag on the ground not wishing to hold it any longer as Poppy spoke of her phobia of fire. "Don't worry Poppy, if you want you can work with me." Shailene offered knowing that it might cut down time with her brother but at least she would be speaking to him after class.
