It would be surprising for the people who knew Abi to discover that she actually loved flying, especially since she tended to avoid most of the Quidditch matches. Yet it was the truth. She loved the feeling of the wind rushing through her hair, she loved the feeling of freedom on the broomstick and she loved to be off the ground doing something so magical. As a muggle born it wasn’t something she was used to and the first time she rode a broomstick took her breath away. It would probably be even more surprising to discover she was good at flying. Not as good as some to be sure but as good as most of the people on the Quidditch team. She naturally moved with the broomstick and knew how to direct it to get it to do exactly what she wanted.
So when the Quidditch Pitch was empty of teams practicing (usually pretty late at night) Abi would sneak off down to the pitch, take one of the school brooms out the cupboard and, well, fly on it. I mean what else could you do with a flying broom? Sweep? It was a beautiful clear night, with a half moon hanging happily in the sky when Abi could be found pushing open the portrait of the Fat Lady, a wooly hat on and sneaking through the castle. It was lucky that she did not encounter any Teachers, but she was getting good at avoiding them using the many corners, nooks and crannies of Hogwarts considering she did this so often. Reaching the entrance hall, she opened the Great Doors just enough for her to slip through and closed them once she was out in the cold crisp dark outdoors. She took a moment to take a deep breath and look around to check for anybody before continuing on her quest to the Quidditch pitch.
It didn’t take her long at all to reach the pitch, grab a Broom out the cupboard and walk towards the centre of the pitch. Looking up at the six hoops, three on either end of the pitch and the stands she took a moment to imagine she actually was a member of the Gryffindor Team, being cheered on by the grounds, all eyes on her before she shook her head and closed her eyes, her mind returning to reality and the broomstick in her hand. The broomstick to her represented everything about this magical world she entered into by pure chance and luck six years. It was a symbol of infinity possibilities and she didn’t understand why its main use was in a sport.
With that thought in mind she swung her leg over the broom and kicked off from the ground. She soared into the air and grinned, chucking to herself slightly at the pure joy and freedom she felt. Leaning down on the broomstick she shot it forward quickly before pulling it to a sudden stop. Looking around her she sent the broomstick quickly forward once more leaping as she did so. As she drew straight once more at a steady speed she threw her arms into the air, laughing loudly, silhouetted against the moon.

She slipped outside, broom in hand. There wasn't any arm in working on her flying. Sure that is what practice and flying club was for but she loved the night. The pitch was most always empty and it was nice being able to enjoy the calmness that came with flying. At times like this there wasn't a bludger to look out for or a team to work with. Not that she regretted being apart of the Quidditch team, in fact she quite enjoyed it. However she did miss the simple pleasures of just flying. It really helped take a load off as well considering everything that had been happening recently.
It was a shock to see someone else out that night. Alaya let out a soft laugh as she smiled at the girl. She recognized the flier as a gryffindor, one that she had seen in some of her classes as they were in the same year. But like most others she had not talked to her at all. Alaya mounted her broom and took off. "Having Fun?" She asked as she approached the girl. Alaya had a kind smile as she hovered in the air for a bit. She felt comfortable on the broom and it was a very nice night out even if the air was a bit chilly. During her first two years she hated being on the broom. She had this need to keep her feet on the ground, but that did change and now she absolutely loved the feeling of flying.

She jumped when she heard a voice coming from within the air as well, causing the broom to wobble slightly and Abi to grab hold of the broomstick once more in an iron tight grip to prevent herself from falling off. Looking over to who spoke she recognised a girl who was in her house but whom she hadn’t spoken too much. She instantly stop being so relaxed in her attitude, withdrawing into herself slightly. She had learnt throughout her life that sometimes it was best to be wary of new people but it was more from the shock than anything else. She blinked a bit at the girl before realizing she was being a tad rude. “Hey...er yeah” she said before thinking and adding “Sometimes its nice to just fly...you know?”
It also occurred to her after a few moments thought that the girl was also on the Gryffindor team, something to do with a bat if she recalled correctly. She didn’t know much about Quidditch and she supposed that was another reason why she avoided it so much. She had stopped the broom when the girl had spoke, both so she could regain her balance and so she could talk to the girl so she began to move forward again at a slight slow pace, flying lazily in circles around the girl. Looking at her again a name came to her Alaya she thought she was called. In fact she was pretty sure of it and she should be considering she shared classes with her. “So whats a girl like you hanging in a place like this at this time of night?” she said, trying to make up for her earlier rudeness. The words were followed by a grin. Swinging her legs she began to circle once more, her posture once again relaxed.

Alaya did not mean to startle the girl. And from her actions she really did look like she was going to fall. Alaya was relieved that the girl did not fall and was able to regain her balance. It was kind of unnerving the way the girl looked at her but then again Alaya figured it was just merely her and not the girl. She was probobly just in a slight shock. Alaya was the one who startled her so it made sense. There was no more tension when the girl started to speak. "Yeah I understand that" She said. I was nice to just fly. Being able to defy gravity and enjoy the peace that came with the night sky. Even in the cooling temperatures of the autumn, going into winter, it was wonderful having the time to just wonder outside pick up a broom and fly.
She did not mind the girl's circling. Alaya was trying to figure out where she saw the girl. She was a gryffindor sixth year. They were in some of the same classes but Alaya could not quite remember her name. She was very bad when it came to interaction so it wasn't surprising that she couldn't remember the girl's name. Alaya kept to herself most of the time or she was with James or the team and that tended to drive people away some of the time. She listened to the question and smiled. "Well it is the perfect time to enjoy a peaceful flight outside of practice and frankly I couldn't sleep" Alaya laughed at the last part, trying to be friendly. "What about yourself? What brings you here?" She was just trying to be polite with the conversation. Alaya really did hate it when she gave off the wrong first impression to someone she did not believe to be a threat in any way. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
