Winters drew in quickly around Hogwarts. The year would begin with summer lingering: the days would still be warm and dry and sunny and then within a few short weeks the sunshine would become less and lesson and the clouds more and more. Temperatures began to drop and the trees leaves turned to red and eventually the rain would begin to fall and the temperatures would fall with it until eventually the rain became snow and the grounds became ice. Winters might be difficult at Hogwarts but she was never cold. The castle was fall of cracking fires and her robes with thick and warm. It wasn’t quite at that stage yet but it was drawing in and Abi predicted it would be here soon. The trees were begin to shed their leaves and already there sky was mostly dark grey clouds occasionally broken up by light. Looking out of her dormitory window in the Gryffindor common room Abi decided that she should make most of her Saturday and get outside onto the grounds while she still could.
Grabbing her cloak she swung it over shoulders and clasped it up before grabbing her maroon and yellow striped wooly hat and pulling it down over her curly dark hair so it stuck out from under it in a wild manner. It took her only a few moments to get out of the common through and through the castle down out past the Great Hall. It was a well trodden path, not really surprising after six years at Hogwarts and that accounted for the short amount of time it took for her to be out on the grounds. Now she was outside she wasn’t entirely sure where to go. Normally she’d go to the Quidditch pitch and grab one of the brooms and just fly but she wasn’t sure if there was practice or even a game on today and she avoided Quidditch like it was a bad case of Spattergroit.
She couldn’t very well hang around the doors all day though so picked a direction and began to walk. In the distance was the Game Keepers Hut, steam was rising from the chimney and there were pumpkins as well as other plants growing in the grounds. Behind that was the forbidden forest, the trees were growing tall into the sky, crowded close together, shrouding many unknown creatures as well as some known and familiar to Abi thanks to Care of Magical Creatures. Being muggleborn Abi had not grown up with Magic and so it still took her breath away every so often. It was strange to believe she was part of this whole separate world.
Without her realising it her feet had taken her to, unsurprisingly really, the Quidditch Pitch. Abi loved to fly but unlike the majority of the people at Hogwarts she didn’t love much less like Quidditch. Flying though, flying she adored. She loved the feeling of the wind rushing through her hair, she loved the feeling of freedom on the broomstick and she loved to be off the ground doing something so magical. She was good at flying as well. She naturally moved with the broomstick and knew how to direct it to get it to do exactly what she wanted. However she really didn’t understand the passion that Quidditch inspired from the masses. It was on this thought that she reached the Quidditch Pitch and instead of grabbing one of the school brooms she leant against one of the posts for the stands, staring up at the sky wondering if anyone was up there flying, perhaps practising.
