It was dark and foggy, and not much could be made out due to the dew setting upon the sleek glass windows of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The edges of the windowsills had begun to freeze due to the constantly dropping temperatures. He could almost feel the cold, night air seeping all around, engulfing him in its animosity and malignance. Alex closed his eyes and listened to the crashing and movement of the waves in the Black Lake. Creatures were making noises every now and then, but nothing disturbed him for some reason.
Throughout the years, he had grown to embrace and harness his fears. Simply because the boy had no choice. His parents were staunch followers of Voldemort, still living and breathing the Death Eater ways. It was a lifestyle Alexander Rookwood once wanted. After witnessing the horrifying things they did to people all in the name of a greater good and a greater world ruled by them...he was not so sure that was what he wanted. Day in and day out the Slytherin would try to wrap his mind around his future...but all to no avail. He was still stuck at square one.
The boy opened his eyes and breathed the cold night air. It was harsh and heavy. But every inhalation brought a sense of cool tranquility to his lungs...along with the occassional shudder. He wished he could spend all his time out here. Without the pressures of school and family. It was a cruel and unforgiving world. The only comforts were the abundance of willing friends and the company of ladies. The thought brought a smile upon his face. At least things could not get any worse. How was that for a silver lining?
Subtlely was never one of Alexander's virtues. He was deliberate, decisive and occasionally...a little reckless. But wasn't that all part of the Death Eater brood and upbringing? But appearances could most definitely be deceiving. To the untrained eye, the Rookwood boy was a charming, yet dangerous Death Eater wannabe. To his closer friends, the boy who seemed to live for excitement had a softer, sensitive side; a side that was dabbled with fear. But Friday evening was not a night to reamin fixated on the past and the future...regardless of how gloomy and uncertain it was. In his deep, meaningless train of thought, Alexander Rookwood completely disregarded the presence of another figure.

The chilly November air had made her start to wearlong sleeves, of course she could have worn a coat, or her cloak but she hadn’t really thought she’d be going for a walk when she had first gone to the library. But she hadn’t felt like staying indoors, she knew that sooner or later the rain would take over and she would be unable to take walks because everything would be muddy. She wrinkled her nose at the mere thought of mud, she found it to be such a pointless thing. It ruined your clothes, and Katherine had pretty cute clothes, it was why she didn’t like mud. But luckily for her, as she headed down the moving staircases, there was no sign of rain. She said hello to a few other Hufflepuff’s and other people she was friendly with. She had no specific plan for the rest of the day, so she could basically be caught up with any one person and take longer than she expected to get outside. Just as she was thinking that she ran into one of the chattier fifth years, she was asking Katherine a question, and she was too polite to just brush the girl off.
Lucky for her she got distracted and Katherine was able to mumble an apology before excusing herself out the front doors. She decided to head towards the courtyard, it was probably the most likely place she’d run into one of her friends. Sure enough as she walked towards the courtyard she spotted a very familiar Slytherin. Normally Katherine would run from Slytherin’s most of them were major pains in the butt and all had entitlement issues. Most of them discriminated against her because not only was she a hufflepuff but she was a muggleborn. But Alex was the exception to the rule, he could be a jerk to basically everyone, but he had always been nice to Kat. She considered herself lucky because she got to see a side to Alexander that no one else was allowed to see. Mostly people saw him as this really jerky Slytherin, basically your stereotypical Slytherin but he was usually pretty nice to Katherine. He was almost as good a friend as Caleb was to her, for which she was thankful for. Kat knew she had been truly blessed with great friends, and she would never trade them for anyone in the world. He seemed very caught up in whatever thought he was having, so she approached quietly, as quietly as you could in her current shoes, but she could still manage it. She was surprised he didn’t turn around, which meant that he truly was caught in thought, she was tempted to leave him alone, but they hadn’t really talked a lot lately, so she wanted to catch up with him. She knew that he wouldn’t get scared, so she decided to speak in a very clear and loud voice.
“You look caught up in thought” she noted lightly, “Should I leave you alone, or would you like some company?”

Growing up as a child in Ottery St. Catchpole, Alexander was almost always away from the hustle and bustle of London and, of course, the Muggles that inhabited and scoured over it. That was only true until his first visit to Diagon Alley. He was immediately enamored by the abundant selection of wizarding knick knacks and gadgets. Everyone was having a wonderful time...until they noticed his family standing near by. Knockturn Alley, on the other hand, gave him a whole new, but refreshing sensation. A chance to experience the best of both worlds. It was a dark, ominous and silent grouping of buildings and streets. The loudest noises that penetrated the air were the sharp caws of the crows. No one dared to speak above a whisper in this town. No one knew who to trust, and whom not to. But it certainly did not bother the little Slytherin-to-be one bit. People cringed into a bow and made way while the Rookwood family passed by. Even at that age Alex enjoyed the power and spoil of being one of the oldest Death Eater families in wizarding society.
Beyond physical features that were irresistable by every lady in this school, Alexander Lucian Rookwood was quite mesmerized by the prospect of power. At first it may sound somewhat childish and vague, but the world of wizards was run on that boundless, endless circle of life. The powerful lived lavishly, while the weak suffered the consequences of society. The ambitious Slytherin lived for that excitement; lived for that influence. But Alexander's careful, deliberate alter ego revealed another side to it all. Some said that thoughts like that held you back from your goal and ambitions; some say otherwise. That power hunger could just make you reckless, greedy and end up in demise. It was a never-ending conflict that Alex truly hoped to put an end to.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was supposed to be the safest place in the wizarding world. Then what had him so worked up? So deep into a trance-like thought? Truthfully, it was a question that Alexander really did not want answered. He was scared of what it might mean. Luckily, as he attempted to relinquish the thought from his mind, the presence of another became clear to him. The sweet smell of perfume indicated without doubt that it was a lady. As her voice rang out softly, it was impossible for Alex to mistake it for anyone else. "You look caught up in thought. Should I leave you alone, or would you like some company?" Katherine Hughes. His lips curved slightly at the corners resulting in a small, but pleasant smile gracing his tan, masculine face. "Now Katherine, you know that your company is always appreciated." replied Alexander with a confident, yet polite tone. Any yearning questions and conflicts regarding Death Eaters and all that junk was now wiped from the boy's thought frequency.
Finally building up the needed willpower, Alex turned about to face a bright, attractive girl. Beauty at its best. That phrase perfectly described the stunner standing in from of him. Her lips were curved up into the slightest of smiles. She stood with confidence, but glowed with a loving and charismatic nature. Kat always had an aura about her that seemed, well, joyful. And Alexander found it refreshing and absolutely contagious. Yes, Katherine was a Hufflepuff. And yes...Katherine Hughes was also a Muggle-born witch. As the thought ran across his mind, Alexander did not stop for a moment to question his actions as a blood purist or to wonder what his parents would think. It always seemed seamless, standing by her side or making endless hours of conversation with her. With a smile Alexander thought to himself, "This amazing Muggle-born, Hufflepuff girl is my best friend. And I couldn't be any happier for it."

If she was honest never in her life would she have thought that she would have a best friend who was a Slytherin. Caleb was a Ravenclaw yes, and he had been her best friend for as long as Alexander had been, but it wasn’t the same. The friendship she had with Alexander was different, because she knew that he was different around her. She knew this because a lot of people commented that he seemed to be a complete jerk, but she had never seen him that way. He didn’t even seem to care that she was a muggleborn, or the fact that she was a hufflepuff which was usually considered to be one of the soft houses. Not that Katherine cared, because she loved being a hufflepuff and she didn’t mind at all that she was a muggleborn. She had to have ancestors that were witches or wizards in her past and well if she didn’t well she felt special. She was a part of two worlds and loved them both the same. She knew she could do a lot of good when she left school and trained to be a healer, and she would also do great things by helping her mother with her fashion line. She was nothing if not ambitious in that aspect, all while still being nice to everyone.
“As is yours Alex” she said with a smile, “What was going through your head?”
She wasn’t sure what it was, but she appreciated that Alex was always so sweet to her. She loved that he was always so nice and it made her feel even luckier. She didn’t care about anything if she was honest, blood status, houses, it was all the same to her. They all had the same magical gift and they were all attending school in an attempt to master it. She moved a strand of blonde hair from her face as Alexander finally turned to look at her. She gave him a radiant smile, she was always smiling that was just a quirk of hers. In her mind, if you didn’t smile at a person it showed that you didn’t’ care about them. And if she was honest with herself she cared about Alexander a lot, he was one of the most important people in her life and she had no idea what she would do without him. And she cared about him just because he was Alex, not because he was super attractive, though that did help. That had been one of the things that had made him a bit shy around him at first, the fact that he was so very attractive and paying attention to her. She had been iffy about it too, just because she wasn’t used to it. Yes she knew she was pretty, but she didn’t necessarily go flaunt it everywhere. Alex was attractive, even though if she was honest she found Caleb attractive too in his own way. They both had very different styles and personalities and Katherine loved both boys.
“Whatever it was, it made you very focused. So why not take a break, and walk with me for a bit. We can catch up properly” she said.
