Amortentia is said to be the most powerful love potion in the world which causes infatuation and obsession in the person that drinks it. This potion is an extremely difficult potion to brew correctly and to each person a correctly brewed Amortentia potion gives off different smells. For me, After having a whiff of the sample potion from class, the scents I could detect were peppermint, rain, butterbeer and something that smelt like smoke from a bushfire.

The effects of this are said to be instant to the drinker, becoming obsessed and infatuated with the person who gave the potion. The person who has drunk this potion become sickly looking as they become obsessed. However the potion does wear off so unless a person is constantly drinking the potion, the effects wear off and the person who drank the potion regains control of their mind and feelings.

This is an extremely dangerous potion because of the intense infatuation and obsession, luring someone into thinking they have fallen for the person who gave then the potion and because of this it is said to be the most powerful potion ever created. If this potion was placed in the wrong hands it could lead to disastrous results.

In fact it is said to be the most powerful love potion and general potion in the world. This potion, when brewed properly has distinct characteristics such as a mother of pearl sheen to it, spiralling steam can be seen and the scents produced varies based on what the person smelling likes, it like a reminder to each person of the things they find most attractive, even if the person doesn’t acknowledge or understand why they find a particular scent attractive. For myself, the scents that I smelt from the potion include: pomegranate, cherries, rain and books. Of course this potion doesn’t actually create actual love. Instead it creates a powerful infatuation or obsession. The drinker of the potion will become infatuated or obsessed with the person who gave them the potion. The effects are almost instantaneous, making the person who drunk the potion look pale and sick as the effects take hold. This potion must be administered continuously to maintain the effects of the potion otherwise the potion will wear off and the drinker will regain their thoughts and free will. The most famous case of Amortentia being used is the one with Merope Gaunt and Tom Riddle Sr. Under the influence of the potion, Tom Riddle Sr married Merope and ran away with her. Merope became pregnant with Tom's child and believing that he had fallen for her or at least stay for the baby's sake she stopped giving the potion to Tom. Having regained his free will, Tom quickly left her and the child that would soon be known to the world as Voldemort.

Amortentia: The Potion of False Love by Shailene Wood
There is no real way to invoke true love only ways to replicate the feelings. The Amortentia potion creates the feeling of one being in love to the point that the object of their affection is referred to in descriptive language, such as making them feel as if they are on a fluffy cloud made of pure sunlight. The so called love they feel becomes a pure obsession that can be quite dangerous. When one drinks the potion the affect takes hold immediately causing the drinker to look pale and sickly. The affected eyes become hazy and unfocused as well as their whole being becoming quite unstable, especially in the emotions section. If someone were to insult the person that they are so infatuated by there is a chance that they might strike out against the insulter. There is no instant cure but this potion requires that the drinker be given the potion quite frequently or the affects become nonexistent and the person will regain their own free will over their emotions.

The Amortentia potion is a very difficult one to make but there are many signs that it is being made correctly. When the potion is complete it should have a mother-of-pearl sheen as well as the steam rising in characteristic spirals. The potions is extremely unique in the sense that it smells different to each individual depending on which smells most attract them. For myself the potion smells rather sweet consisting of aromas such as rain, flowers, and honey.
