Stillness; the Black Lake’s surface looked as smooth as glass, a glinting coming off of it from the high noon sun sparkling like diamond shards scattered across it. Maharet always wondered what it would be like to have that sort of calmness in your life. With her it was a constant battle to uphold this false persona so that people believed she was a darling. The amount of effort that was put into it on a day-to-day basis meant one thing to her, and that was that she had an insurmountable quotient of stamina. Maybe it had nothing to do with that though, perhaps the real wonderment here was that she had a talent for acting- was that a particularly difficult profession- or did it have more to do with self-preservation? Regardless of what the truth was in her psychoanalysis the fact of the matter was that Maggie envied the lake. It seemed a bit silly even to her that she could envy an inanimate object, but that tranquility that the lake possessed was so very different from how she was. Her mind was always running a million miles a minute with both the most mundane of things and profound. As she contemplated the lake Maharet wasn’t quite sure which category these thoughts would be placed.
Her envy, as it often did, turned to annoyance. By chance, if anything in life was indeed a coincidence, a small pebble was nuzzled just barely visible in the dirt near the lake’s shore. From her position a few feet away, Maggie approached the shore carefully plucking the pebble out of the dirt delicately holding it between her forefinger and thumb while she used her opposite forefinger to brush the dirt off of it, a rather redundant gesture. Weighing the pebble in her hand Maharet shifted it from one hand to the other savoring the texture of the future culprit. Once she was satisfied, Maggie flicked her wrist sending the pebble out across the water. It went a considerable distance but that wasn’t what interested the girl. No, it was the ripples that disturbed the water in the pebbles wake that grabbed her attention. A haughty grin slowly crept its way onto Maharet’s mouth at the sight. The lake no longer held that sense of serenity that had so bothered her only moments ago. Instead there was chaos, and as offbeat as it might have been, the contentment of seeing something tremble from her doing seeped into her mind.
Such happy moments were fleeting though, as were most things in life. The lake soon settled back to its original calm. Maggie had to resist the urge to sneer not only could she not afford to use such a facial expression in public but it was awfully bad for maintaining a youthful appearance- no pre-mature wrinkle lines for Miss Rosier, oh no. Sucking in a deep, cleansing, breath Maharet let the moment pass. It wasn’t a total disappoint, she reminded herself. Beneath the surface lay things that could make the lake restless; merepeople, the Giant Squid, plant life, fish, and who knew what other creatures dwelled in the deep. Clinging to that thought Maggie let a tender smile slip onto her lips and just in the nick of time too for she heard the distinct sound of footsteps approaching. Seemingly oblivious to another’s presence, Maharet swept her luscious, golden locks behind her shoulder on one side, and adorned a look of wide-eyed innocence.
