jez stepped quietly along the winding path that headed to the womping willow, feeling a need for the peace and quiet the perimeter that the willow provided. that was the good thing about the whomping willow; not many students dared to go near it - either from the rumours they heard about it, or from first hand experiance themself. jez herself had never been stupid enought to disturb the whomping willow, though she'd inched the line on occasion it had never stired. perhaps it was that the whomping willow took pity on her, or liked her or something. then again... it was a true. could a tree like a person? or have feelings at all?
jessamine connors paused as she reached the tree, making sure she was on the edge of that invisible barrier; not wanting to step over it and get squashed today. or any day for that matter. with a small sigh, jez considered the great tree, before bending her knees and lightly, fluidly dropping into a seated position; crossing her slender legs neatly and leaning back on her hands. she was glad the whomping willow was part of a more secluded area of the grounds; she felt more protected here, out of view from other people.
jez was certainly not a people person. she'd never wondered why; that was all down to her twin brother riley. she shuddered even at the thought of him and his twisted mind. she didn't understand him, she never had. why he seemed to like to push her down, to shove her hard against a wall, to kick her or hurt her. she'd never done anything to him, and he'd always been their muggle parents' favourites. but that was why she didn't like people, in general she didn't trust them. of course there were exceptions, like hugo for instance; her cheeks flushed lightly at the thought of her boyfriend, or her best friend josh. in fact, thinking of josh, she paused in thought to wonder where he was.

Josh's eyes raced back and forth over the pages of the book that he was so deeply into. The words entered his mind to paint a picture of a horrific battle scene in the deserts of Egypt. Wizards flung their spells across the fields, centaurs ran rapidly striking everybody they could, and Giants flung their arms around, smashing buildings, pyramids and people. Josh couldn't seem to draw his attention away from this book, but he needed to - Josh was supposed to meet up with Jez and just relax. This week had been hard on the two of them, with beginning of the year homework racking up, they both really just needed to get away. Once Josh finally pulled his eyes away from the book, he got up from his bed and grabbed a jacket from his trunk. Josh grabbed his wand and headed to the door. Josh never really took the time to admire anything in the castle, and even though he was running late, he thought he'd take his time and just take it in. Josh realized that he wasn't going to be in this castle forever, and there was so much exploring to do still. "Save it for another day," Josh thought to himself, and he headed out the main door. As Josh approached the Whomping Willow, he noticed the way the sun hit the magnificent tree. Even though the Whomping Willow was a scary tree, it really was a beautiful one. Looking beyond the tree, Josh noticed a small figure sitting in the distance. Knowing it was Jez, Josh took out his wand - he knew she was having a stressful day, and he wanted to cheer her up, she was his best friend after all. Pointing his wand in the air, Josh muttered "Avis" and a flock of blue song birds appeared out of thin air. Josh directed the birds with his wand toward Jez, and together, they flew to Jez, landed around her feet and began to sing wonderfully. Josh strolled over to where Jez sat and admired his creations at work - working to make Jez laugh. Josh pulled a rather small candy bar and sat down next to Jez. "Fancy seeing you here, huh?" Josh said as he waved his hand over the candy bar, muttering "Engorgio" as he did. The candy bar doubled in size. Josh unwrapped the candy, broke off a piece and offered it to Jez. "Want some?"

jez surveyed the tree with light interest, eyes tracing it's knarled old branches and twisted bark. the leaves rippled in the wind, a few drifted lazily toward the ground, colours of amber, auburn and crispy gold as they piled around the base of the tree. october had finally arrived, and the trees were already shedding their colours. jez glanced up at the light skys, glad that the sun seemed to be holding it's own against the bitter wind - lucky for her this corner of the grounds sheltered her from the onslaught of cold breeze, and she waited patiently for her best friend.
they'd planned to meet up, and she knew that josh would know where to come - they usually met here, it felt like their place. she wasn't sure how many minutes she sat there, but suddenly the light chirping of birds and fluttering wings alerted her of another presence. she turned her head to the right, watching the small, beautiful birds twirl and circle on the breeze around her, chirping happily at her and a smile stretched across jez's face. she turned her head around to see josh just as she heard his light tone a few feet away.
"Fancy seeing you here, huh?" jez glanced up at him and grinned, nodding and causing her bright aburn hair to fall across her face. brushing it impatiently aside, she rolled her cool blue eyes lightly. "yeah .. fancy. " she teased and watched him make to sit beside her, glancing at the tree for a few moments quietly when she heard the rustlings of unwrapping and a muttered spell. jez laughed lightly and glanced at him. "that's cheating you know." she reprimanded lightly - only teasing him of course.
"Want some?" jez looked at josh and smiled, going to take the offered piece. "sure...thanks." she said lightly. it wasn't often guys shared food - she took the chance if she was offered it. chocolate was never something you could pass up! "so how're you?" she asked, not having seen him all day and wondering how the day had treated him so far.

Josh chuckled at Jez's comment about him cheating. One thing Josh loved about magic is it's simple uses. Back at home, there are so many things that Josh does to make his parents and his own life much easier. Josh smiled a bit as he remembered all of the times his mom tried to garden and couldn't grow anything. To try to make her feel better, Josh would sneak out in the middle of the night and cast charms on her plants to make them spring to life. The joy that a simple act like that brought his mom was priceless. Josh knows why he was given this gift, and it was to simply make people happy. As Jez took the candy from his hand, Josh smiled softly. Just knowing that his presence helped make her day made him a happy guy. Of course, it was a two way street; there weren't oo many people that Josh got close to, Jez was truly one of a kind. Josh thought about his day before he responded to Jez, he hadn't really done too much. Studied, went to classes, read a bit, listened to constant bickering between two Ravenclaws in his bed room, and witnessed a duel between a Slytherin and a Gryffindor. He glanced over to Jez and responded "I'm pretty good actually. Stressed, but my day was pretty eventually, surprisingly. I studied most of the day and on my way back from the library, I saw this Gryffindor and Slytherin duel. It was actually a pretty good one, until Professor Longbottom broke it up. The Slytherin guy had a huge gash on his forehead. Just a reminder how tense everybody is with each other really. I need to relax so, I read a book before I came here, a new History of Magic book, it was really intense. I got lost in it, which is why I was running behind actually."Josh smiled as he finished his story. The way the sun was hitting Jez was magnificent. He took a second to just admire his surroundings. It was so quiet and so peaceful out here. It was hard to imagine how different things become once they get back in the castle. Out here though, it was only two friends, just enjoying each other's company. "How about you?" Josh said softly "How have you been?"

jez took a bite into the candy, chewing it quietly for a few moments and then hearing him speak. "I'm pretty good actually. I got lost in it, which is why I was running behind actually."
jez swallowed her mouthful and looked at him, raising her eyebrows slightly. "wow! a lot happened to you today then. " jez grinned, a little glad she hadn't witnessed the brawl; she wasn't really one to find duels of excitement. of course, if someone faced her and provoked her she'd sure as heck defend herself - but it wasn't as interesting for her if it was two people she didn't know. "and no worries about running behind, as long as the book was worth it." she grinned, teasing him a little but understanding. she wasn't much of a bookworm for a ravenclaw, but if she could get into a book then she found it hard to put it down. it was nice that josh read, not many guys did, and she didn't mind him being the more intelligent one.
"How about you?" jez glanced at him, having looked away momentarily toward the tree and finishing her piece of candy. "How have you been?" she nodded and smiled. "yeah good thanks. this is kinda the first time i've been outside in a while .. revision has chained me to my desk." she laughed lightly at herself and shook her head, auburn hair tumbling over her shoulder. she knew that it was a whole to their OWLs, but she wanted to be prepared and she knew josh wouldn't judge her for that, even if he did tease her.

Josh listened diligently to Jez as she spoke. While she said she was good, Josh wasn't too sure if he believed her, but he didn't want to badger her, if she wanted to talk about it, she would. As she mentioned studying, Josh laughed slightly to himself, it was a long time until the OWLs, but Jez had already started studying her life away. Of course Josh was going to tease her, but he actually had been doing the same thing. Josh leaned his shoulder down and bumped Jez's shoulder playfully, saying, "Studying already? Leave it to Jessamine Connors to study so far in advance, just so she could out-score the rest of the class. That's all right, I'm not mad about it because you know when they OWLs come, you're going down." Josh looked at Jez, gave her a sarcastic, playful smile and shook his head laughing as he turned to take a bit of his candy. Turning his attention to the birds he created, a smiled broadened on his face. That was one of the first spells he had ever performed, and it was so simple. The results were beautiful though. Even though it was just a simple charm, it could do a lot more. Josh knew that those birds would defend him until, quite literally, the death. As Josh sat, he started to wonder things like: What was Jez's first spell, when did she find out she was a witch, and how her parents reacted.... things like that. "You know," Josh started, "Avis was the first spell I ever did. Back during the summer before first year. My parents kept laughing at me, trying to make something happen with my wand, but when I did, they were so excited. Birds are probably my favorite animal, and I love that I can just make them appear whenever I want," Josh finished as he turned his attention to the partially eaten candy bar. Waving his hand over it, Josh said "Avifors" and as he did, the candy bar quickly started to change color, sprout a beak and wings. Where a candy bar once sat, now was a smaller cockatoo, singing away. Josh looked at his creation, smiled, and then looked toward Jez, "What was your first spell?"

as he bumped her shoulder she jumped slightly and glanced at him, quickly hiding any show of her brief flash of surprise with a light grin. that was what riley had done to her, she wasn't too great when people jumped out on her or poked or nudged her..or snuck up from behind. she was fierce and all when she was cornered, but when she wasn't expecting things she always jumped or flinched. she couldn't help it, it was a natural reaction. at home whenever she was poked or nudged or snuck up on it was riley .. and it was never a nice surprise. that was why she found it hard to trust people, particulary guys - and why she was so surprised that josh was her best friend. then again, he'd been nothing but nice to her over the years, always joking and playful and never pushing her around. she felt she could trust him, so she did. course, she'd never actually explained about riley to anyone - she didn't want pity ... though hugo had seen her scars once by accident and she'd had to tell him. but she was careful never to let anyone see them.
"Studying already? Leave it to Jessamine Connors to study so far in advance, just so she could out-score the rest of the class. That's all right, I'm not mad about it because you know when they OWLs come, you're going down." jessamine shuddered as he said her full name. "urgh you knoooow i hate that name. it's jez." she grinned and made to poke him lightly, shaking her head. she really hated the name 'jessamine' and begged people to call her jez or even jess or jessie if they wanted - even people she didn't like. but jessamine? god no. "and you know i need all the studying i can get .. but you can tease all you like .. i know you'll be sneaking in just as many hours as i will to try and beat me .. bring it on boy." she grinned, teasing him playfully in return.
with a small smile, she shifted and made to lay back, resting her arms on her flat stomach and looking up at the lazy clouds, auburn hair splayed around her like dormant flames. "You know," jez turned her head to look at him. "Avis was the first spell I ever did. Back during the summer before first year. My parents kept laughing at me, trying to make something happen with my wand, but when I did, they were so excited. Birds are probably my favorite animal, and I love that I can just make them appear whenever I want," jez grinned lightly, never really having spoken to josh about their childhoods. she didn't like talking about hers and tended to deflect the questions. " really? that's cool. teach them to laugh at you, hey." jez smiled lightly and watched as he murmer "Avifors" and transformed the candy. "nice spellwork...shame you just wasted some perfectly good candy." she grinned.
"What was your first spell?" jez looked away, back up to the clouds and chewed on her lip in a thoughtful manner, even though she was hesitant rather than thinking. "my first spell..?" she shook her head slightly. "protego .. i think." she frowned slightly, trying to think. "i didn't know i had magic until i got my letter frm hogwarts. i mean .. i did the odd thing here or there but i never thought anything of it .. and then when i got here, i wanted to learn a defense spell first... " she bit her lip, knowing he'd ask why. but she'd wanted to learn a defensive spell to fend off riley a little.

Josh laughed quietly at the challenge. Of course he would sneak in extra hours of studying, studying was something he actually enjoyed doing. Following Jez's lead, he laid down too, putting his hands behind his head as he looked up at all the clouds. He thought back to all the time his parents had encouraged his magic, and how proud they were to have a wizard for a son. Looking over to Jez he said, "My parents always encouraged it though. They love what I do with magic, they think it's magnificent. It's really cool too, back in the states, the Ministry over here has a difficult time tracking me in Chicago because we have our own ministry and such."Listening to Jez's response about her spell, Josh remembered the first time he had ever accidentally done magic - back at his lake house because of the fire. It was because of magic that his parents were still alive, and Josh was so grateful for that. He knew that Jez didn't have the greatest relationship with her parents, just something he picked up on for how little she spoke of them. Nothing Josh really wanted to bring up though, he knows that bad memories are the worst to talk about, and he really liked it when he brought happiness to people. "Protego, huh? It's a good spell to know, just in case anything were to happen. I try not to think about those things though. I know it, just in case, but, I try to keep myself out of harms way. Been difficult lately though, this Seventh year Hufflepuff vampire is intent on bugging me all the time. Nothing I can't handle though." Josh said as he laughed. "Sure, sometimes people can get you down, but you just have to laugh and move on. You'll be better because of it."Josh faced Jez once more and showed flashed a smile, just to tell her it would all work out in the end.

jez looked at josh, watching as he copied her and laid back, turning her head toward him as he spoke again. "My parents always encouraged it though. They love what I do with magic, they think it's magnificent. It's really cool too, back in the states, the Ministry over here has a difficult time tracking me in Chicago because we have our own ministry and such." jez grinned lightly. "you do? what's your ministry like?" she asked, curious. she'd never been outside of the U.K and she was interested about other countries and how they dealt with magic. she shifted, rolling onto her side to face him and propping herself up on one elbow.
"Protego, huh? It's a good spell to know, just in case anything were to happen. I try not to think about those things though. I know it, just in case, but, I try to keep myself out of harms way. Been difficult lately though, this Seventh year Hufflepuff vampire is intent on bugging me all the time. Nothing I can't handle though." jez gave him a vauge smile and shifted to lay on her back once more, gaze up at the clouds. she sighed quietly. "but sometimes it'd not as easy as you think to keep out of harms way . . . so yeah, protego's pretty useful." she smiled slightly, but jez knew it wasn't really helpful for her. back in her muggle house with her muggle family she couldn't use magic - she'd get expelled with the trace on her and all. not that she'd probably have the guts to do magic on her brother anyway. he was still her brother .. and sometimes he even had his good days.
"and you know.. if you can't handle it, you know i've got your back.." she grinned lightly, glancing at him and teasing him lightly. she knew he wouldn't go to her to sort out his fights, but she was always there for backup. "Sure, sometimes people can get you down, but you just have to laugh and move on. You'll be better because of it." jez looked at josh and smiled softly but made no coment. she wished it was true, she really did, but sometimes you couldn't get over what the people around you were saying to you or doing. jez shifted and yawned lightly, grinning at josh and throwing aside her thoughts in annoyance. why did she always have to think back to the bad times? it was such a bore. "sorry .. but it's so comfy here, can't help but feel sleepy." she grinned, appologising for yawning. "or maybe you're just boring me.." she joked. of course josh wasn't boring her, he was her best friend.

Josh was really relaxed out here. He knew that nothing could go wrong, and that te two of them could literally just sit out here forever and just be free from everything else. Funny how it worked this way, everybody seemed to have that one friend they could count on. It was different for these two to be such good friends, given the fact that Josh is petrified when it comes to talking to women, and Jez doesn't have to many other guy friends either. Whatever the case may be, he was happy. "Of course you have my back, I just wouldn't bring you into anything like that." Josh said as he leaned sat up on his elbows, smiling, "and you know that I would always have yours, no matter way. Even if I am overseas, I'll send something over to help, or just apparate. Out in the states, our Ministry is really just laid back. We have a few more schools out there, and each have their own rules regarding magic. As long as the parents consent, it's all right with them. Doesn't stop Hogwarts from sending me letters occasionally though."Josh was feeling a bit tired too. It must've just been the break from reality finally setting in. He hadn't really been sleeping too well - too much studying, though he wouldn't admit it. Even though he was relaxed, he kind of felt the hunger for adventure. Jez and Josh were by the Whomping Willow, and Josh could think of a few things to do for fun. "So, you wanna have some fun? Or would you rather bore me further by just laying around?" Josh said as he sat up, chuckling a bit. He stood up, held his hand out to Jez and said, "It'll be fun, trust me." Josh smiled as he waited for Jez to grasp his hand.

jez relaxed against the hard texture of the ground beneath her back, revelling in it's solidarity and support as she settled against the cool of the grass beneath her back. she gazed up at the clouds once more, remembering times as a child she'd tried to make innocent shapes out of the fluffy white puffs, and how funny it had been. she didn't do that anymore but the sight was still a peaceful one. "Of course you have my back, I just wouldn't bring you into anything like that." jez smiled lightly and glanced at josh, turning her head and causing her flame-coloured hair to shimmer slightly."and you know that I would always have yours, no matter way. Even if I am overseas, I'll send something over to help, or just apparate. Out in the states, our Ministry is really just laid back. We have a few more schools out there, and each have their own rules regarding magic. As long as the parents consent, it's all right with them. Doesn't stop Hogwarts from sending me letters occasionally though."
"i know ... thanks josh." she smiled softly, glad to have a best friend like him. he was a great guy, and she wondered how he could be so afraid to talking to girls. he was fine with her, and she'd always found it easy to love josh - as a friend of course. he was just one of those whole-heartedly decent guys. she was certain there was a nice girl out there for him, he just had to pluck up the courage to find her. jez would be sure to give him a nudge sometime, but for now it was up to josh. she shifted slightly as a rock dug into her back, moving onto her side to push it aside and then going to move back to her original position just as josh spoke once more.
"So, you wanna have some fun? Or would you rather bore me further by just laying around?" jez rolled her eyes and sat up after him. "me ? boring ? psssh was your mouth out joshua." she grinned jokingly and shook her head, pushing her tumbling auburn locks aside as they fell into her gaze."It'll be fun, trust me." jez smiled, lips turned up at the corners as she looked at him and took his hands, using his sturdy frame to pull her own light self to her feet. "i trust you... most of the time." she grinned and laughed lightly, teasing. she trusted him all the time of course. dropping his hands once she was on her feet she looked at him. "so.. what's the plan ?"

Josh smiled as Jez got up, partially laughing at her comments, but also at the fact that he is spending time with such a good friend. Pulling his wand back out, Josh led Jez over to a huge pile of stones, just a little ways from the Whomping Willow. Staying on the outside of the invisible barrier, Josh pointed his wand at one of the larger boulders, "Wingardium Leviosa," and the boulder slowly rose from the pile. Josh held his wand steady and looked toward Jez, [color-357ec7]"It's simple really. We just see who can get their boulder closer to the Womping Willow without being smashed."[/color] Josh wasn't really sure how Jez would feel about this, but he knew that it would be kind of fun. It always felt like there was so much going on, and sometimes the best de-stresser was just blowing things up. Josh figured this would be a way to get both of them laughing, while still practicing a spell or two. "There aren't really rules though, so you can interfere with my boulder; and I can interfere with yours. It should make it a bit interesting, right?" Josh started to point his wand toward the Whomping Willow. As the boulder crossed the barrier the giant tree started to rustle. Josh knew that he wouldn't get it very far, and as soon as that thought crossed his mind, the Whoming Willow struck his boulder, smashing it. Josh laughed loudly, "Well, that sucked for a first try. Your turn Jez."((OOC: Sorry it's taken me so long!))

jez smiled and dropped her best friends hand once she was on her feet, watching him as he headed a little closer to the tree. she copied him, moving forward to the edge of the invisible barrier that surrounded the whomping willow and glancing at josh as he made to explain his idea. " It's simple really. We just see who can get their boulder closer to the Womping Willow without being smashed." jez raised an eyebrow. "a challange? i like it." she grinned lightly and nodded. "alright then.." she said, still grinning and glancing at josh as he set himself up for his go.
"There aren't really rules though, so you can interfere with my boulder; and I can interfere with yours. It should make it a bit interesting, right?" jez nodded and smiled, confirming that she was fine with that. she watched at his attempt, gazing at the tree as it rustled, noted the rock and targeted it as enemy. she laughed when it smashed his stone. "tough luck. " she smiled and made to pick her rock, using the spell to levitate it. she tried inching it toward the tree, at first she managed to get it just across the barrier when the tree finally made a stand and smashed her rock too. "damn.." jez pulled a face and looked at josh. "you're go again..."
she glanced at the tree again, wondering how she could get her stone far enough toward the tree. she guessed inching it along slowly worked .. well for a little while. perhaps keeping it moving. then again that hadn't worked for long. hmmm ... perhaps she would see what josh did next.

Josh laughed a bit as Jez tried to complete the task at hand. Knowing it was difficult, Josh was determined to beat Jez. He could be a little competitive at times, just part of being a guy. Josh pointed his wand to another stone, Josh cast the levitation charm and started toward the Whomping Willow. Josh crept over the barrier with his stone, and as he saw the Willow start to rustle, Josh got ready. Moving the boulder from side to side, Josh avoided the Willow's branches for as long as he could. As he did so, Josh slowly crept over the barrier himself, not really realizing it. Josh laughed as his boulder avoided the different branches, until it was about ten feet away from the base. Branches came from two sides and smashed Josh's boulder. Once the Willow realized there was another intruder, it set it's branches out on Josh. Josh hadn't realized how close he got, and now he had to think quickly. As the branches moved toward him, Josh rolled to his left, got up, and made a dash for the barrier. Another branch started at him from behind, and as it got close, Josh jumped over it, fell, and rolled to safety. Josh was laying on the floor, but he couldn't stop laughing. It was a lot of fun escaping the Whomping Willow, scary, but a lot of fun. ((OOC: Sorry for the delay! I was at the Indy 500 all weekend, and just got back yesterday))

jez grinned and watched as her best friend levitated another rock, she raised her eyebrows and watched as he kept creeping closer and closer to that invisible barrier around the willow, biting her lip in concern as the branches rustled and, seemingly unawear, josh just kept creeping. "careful!" jez called out, biting her lip harder as the branches caught him and he rolled, and eventually made it back over that invisible line.
she rolled her eyes as he started laughing... really laughing, and she couldn't help but grin, shaking her head and causing her long auburn hair to tumble over her shoulders. "well if thats how you want to play it.." she grinned, grabbing the rock and suddenly making a dash for it, laughing as the tree swung it's branches in irritation, one of them whipping across her cheek and she sucked in a breath at the sting of the small scratch - but she was fine. she grinned still, the exhillaration pure as she touched the rough bark of the tree with her rock and whooped. ah.. now she had to make it back.
the branches still battled her, one of them hit her hard and she frowned. "oof." she muttered as it knocked her back against the trunk. uh oh..she was in trouble now. slightly winded, knees buckling she kicked out at the trunk to try and push herself forward fast, accidently knocking some sort of knot on the tree. and then everything just.. stopped. jez sprinted away from the tree, back toward josh, ignoring the stinging on her cheek and stopped beside him, catching her breath and looking at the tree. "w-what the hell?" she raised her eyebrows, staring at the tree which stood motionless, despite the fact that jez and josh were right beside it's perimeter... and would probably break it again soon anyway.
