The Unlimited Wonders of Charms By: Shailene Wood Words: One Hundred & Eighty One Charms is not a simple type of magic that can be learned over night. It takes a great deal of practice, although not as tricky as Transfiguration since one does not change the object completely, just enchant the object to do something it wasn't designed to do. The magic of Charm has unlimited possibilities, for example one can cast Colour Change Charm to cause an object to flash different colors, or the Levitate Charm to allow said object float through the air almost as a means of transporting it. Charms can also be used on the human body. The Cheering Charm is used to impact a person's mood. One may also erase someone's memory, either completely or just a specific incident. Though only highly skilled witches and wizards should attempt this type of Charm work. Charms do not usually lasted long, they are hardly ever permanent but if they are made to last then the objected that has been charmed is now labeled as bewitched. Charms are wondrous bits of magic that, if practiced, can be used in almost any situation.

Charms , by jessamine connors A charm can be described as a type of enchantment that causes the object or being it is casted upon, to behave in a way perhaps unusual to it's usual habit. A 'charm' is normally named for a spell that cannot be classified as a transfiguration, as they do not inherit the nature of the object, but change it. Charms that have a lasting effect upon an object or being are called 'bewitchments' and these are usually only created with very powerful witches and wizards.
There are many purposes to a charm, some simply cause something to change colour, some can allow an object to fly or levitate whilst others can influence a persons mood (such as the cheering charm) which allows someone to effectively feel happier.
However some charms can be very powerful, and therefore when used incorrectly, dangerous. Take, for example, the Fidelius Charm which can hide a person or place so completely and in such a way that not a single person can find them unless the assigned secret keeper gives them the exact location. Another example would be a memory charm, which can very easily damage or perminantly remove part of or completely a person's memory.
