If you had asked Aubrey a month ago who she was going to the Yule Ball with, she probably would’ve answered different than her actual answer now. The last month had been a whirlwind. She had broken up with Scorpius, and then got attacked by someone, she wasn’t sure who. She was just hoping someone didn’t decide to seek revenge on her because she broke up with Scorpius. And then that very same day when she woke up in the Hospital Wing, she found herself kissing Frank Longbottom and now here she was, standing in front of the Mirror in the Gryffindor Sixth Year Girl’s Common room, getting ready to go to the Yule Ball with Frank.
Choosing her Yule Ball dress was actually a lot harder than she thought. She knew many of the girls stuck to their house’s colors, or if they were going with someone of the opposite house they would mix the colors together somehow. But for some reason, Aubrey didn’t really want to do that. Yes, she did have a lot of Gryffindor Pride in her and she showed it off a lot even when school wasn’t in session, but today she decided that she was going to try something different. During the summer Holidays she had managed to find a beautiful strapless deep royal purple dress. She fell in love with it the moment her eyes sat on it and decided that that would be the dress that she wore to the Yule Ball. At the time of course when she bought the dress she had planned on going with Scorpius, but now that she was going with Frank, well she didn’t expect him to coordinate but if he wanted to, that was completely up to him.
She already had the dress on and had now picked up her wand and begun to wave it lightly around her head as she muttered a spell softly so that her hair would magically get put up in an elegant messy bun. Once that was finished she slid her wand into the hidden pocket of her dress, you never know when you might need it and after getting attacked a couple of weeks ago, she didn’t want to part it. She then picked up her small make-up box and lightly applied some make-up. She never was one to apply much if any make-up at all. It didn’t take her long to finish and then she was putting in a pair of dangling diamond earrings in her ears and then placed a matching necklace on herself before taking one last look at herself in the mirror.
Once she decided she looked perfect she nodded to herself and then headed on out of the girl’s dormitory. Frank and her had decided to meet up in the common room, which she was glad as it was much easier than trying to find each other at the Yule Ball. Plus, she rather walk with him to the ball, just in case someone else tried to attack her. Yes, Aubrey was a bit on the alert lately ever since she was attacked. And it even feared her more that it was similar to Hugo’s attack where she couldn’t remember anything.
Gently and slowly, as she was never good with heels even the ones that were only a centimeter high (which was how high hers was) she begun to walk down the stairs to the common room. She hoped that Frank was already waiting for her since she didn’t want to looks silly standing there looking around as she waited for him.

a lot could change in two months.
like, perhaps, say the fact that a few days short of two months he'd actually kissed the girl of his dreams? maybe the little tidbit of information of her breaking up with the boy frank had been sure wasn't right for her from the get-go? perhaps the fact that shortly thereafter his heart had stopped as he found her the victim of another attack? oh, and then there was that lovely other bit of news that sent a slow grin spreading across the seventh year's face as he adjusted his tie in the mirror, she was now going to the yule ball. with him.
maybe there was a god, after all...
he'd been in this state of giddy anticipation all day, and couldn't see himself snapping out of it any time soon. he half wanted to grab james and say 'pinch me', but then again didn't on the fear that the last two months (except for aubrey's, er, injury, of course) were all a dream and he'd wake up. this reality, or dream if it were, was much better than he might have imagined it to be, and he didn't want it to end now or ever.
checking his watch he figured that it was probably about time to head down to the commons room so that he might be there before aubrey, or at least soon after. he didn't want her to get annoyed waiting for him. starting the evening off on a positive note seemed like a good idea. as it turned out, he needn't have worried. his watch was apparently fast, at least compared to the huge grandfather-clock-like contraption in the commons room it was, and he had plenty of time to relax until his date showed her face.
of course all the girls had done themselves up nicely for the evening, wearing beautiful dresses that ranged from sexy, tight fitting cocktail-like dresses to full length ball gowns that set the scene for any sort of royal drama, but he still found himself unprepared for what aubrey would look like when he saw her descending the steps from the girl's dorms towards him. to say that she was stunning would be an insult. of course, on any day of the week aubrey was beautiful but today especially he felt like there might have been some sort of mix up... like a mistake had been made, because he didn't deserve to bring a beauty like her to the ball.
of course, thinking such things wouldn't stop him from doing it. frank moved forwards to meet her at the bottom of the stairs. "you look amazing, aubrey," he informed her, a warm smile on his lips. he offered her his arm for her to take so that the pair could start to the ball, not wanting to waste too much time before they could dance as they had at the masquerade ball, though this time each knowing the other's identity.

“you lookamazing, aubrey,” Aubrey heard his voice as she rounded the last set off stairs. She smiled once she saw the look on Frank’s face and new he was telling the truth. But of course Frank was telling the truth, why would he lie to her? After all, even though she had been dating someone else for the past year he still cared for her and hoped that one day she’d be his. And now she was, and she often wondered lately why she hadn’t realized that she belonged with him in the first place. Yet part of her felt sorry for Scorpius, whom, as far as she knew, would be going to the Yule Ball dateless because of her… But now wasn’t the time to think about that, now was the time to walk arm in arm with Frank to the Yule Ball.
So the young blond descended the last bit of stairs with a smile on her face before she walked up to Frank, linked an arm around his and laid her head softly on his shoulder. “You look quite handsome yourself as well Mr. Longbottom,
” she giggled lightly before she took her head off of his shoulder and then she gave him a quick kiss upon his smooth cheek. “ Shall we head out?” she said with quite a bit of excitement in her voice. She couldn’t wait to get to the ball, she was sure that her and Frank would have a lot of fun at it, even if the two of them weren’t that great of dancers. But you didn’t need to be right? Besides, neither of them were the Gryffindor Champion so it wasn’t like they had to dance on the floor in front of everyone at the beginning of the dance, so at least they wouldn’t get embarrassed. She softly turned to head towards the fat lady’s portrait, as if letting Frank know that should probably get going. She was actually quite curious to see who her best friend, Rose Weasley, was going to the ball with. For some reason Rose had kept it a secret from her and she wondered why her best friend would do that in the first place. “ I wonder who Rose is going with…” she thought out loud as the two of them headed on out of the common room. “you look quite handsome yourself as well mr. longbottom,” frank answered her giggle with a smile, letting the thought cross his mind that he could never grow tired of the sound in a thousand years. "why thank you, m'lady," he chuckled, his grin only growing wider as she kissed his cheek, in fact, he might have actually blushed. it still seemed surreal that she was kissing him. too perfect to be reality. “shall we head out?” the eldest longbottom nodded, and with the most beautiful girl in the school hooked on his arm, began to walk towards the entrance to the commons room.
“i wonder who Rose is going with…” rose keeping such a secret away from her best friend was no doubt unusual for the pair... but frank was more focused on who he was actually going to the dance with than focusing on who other people might be going with. he was close with aubrey, and of course knew the weasley families as their parents went way back to their own times at hogwarts, but didn't have any more of a clue of who rose might be going with than aubrey did herself. "i wouldn't worry about it," he shrugged as they walked through the halls towards the great hall were the ball was to be held. "you'll find out tonight, anyway. maybe she wanted it to be a surprise."

“why thank you, m'lady,” Aubrey smiled a Frank, her blush increasing, he was such a great guy, why hadn’t she realized this before? She wasn’t entirely sure herself, but at least she realized it now. “i wouldn't worry about it,” she heard Frank answer her question about who Rose was going to the Yule ball with as she slid her arm into Frank’s. “you'll find out tonight, anyway. maybe she wanted it to be a surprise,” she nodded as she headed on out of the Common Room with Frank. He had a point, maybe Rose did want to surprise her, but part of her couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps it was for another reason. Well, soon enough she’d find out when they got to the Great Hall where the Yule Ball would be held.
“So did James manage to find a date for the Yule Ball? I mean, he does have to start off the dance with his date, just like the rest of the Champions, ” Aubrey giggled lightly, she couldn’t imagine James just choosing one girl to go with, in fact she wasn’t even sure if James even liked any of the girls at the school, sure she was close with James as if he was an older brother, but it wasn’t like she asked him what type of girl he liked. It just was never a topic Aubrey would think to bring up. “ I can’t even imagine him dancing for some reason,” she said out loud just as they rounded the corner that would lead them right to the Great Hall. Then her jaw dropped as she spotted Rose entering the Yule Ball, with none other than Scorpius Malfoy. How did she feel about this? She wasn’t entirely sure, except for perhaps the part where Rose didn’t think she could tell Aubrey she was going with Scorp. Aubrey would never have had anything against it, she was the one that broke off their relationship after all, but why couldn’t her best friend say anything to her. She closed her mouth, hoping that Frank didn’t notice, and decide to try her best to act normal, as if she hadn’t just seen what she saw. “ Well, where do you want to sit?” she asked as the duo go to the entrance of the Great Hall. “so did james manage to find a date for the yule ball? i mean, he does have to start off the dance with his date, just like the rest of the champions,” with a slight start the seventh year realized that, well, he didn't actually know the answer to her inquiry. he hadn't talked to james about the yule ball much. "i... don't actually know. it didn't come up in our conversations... i assume he's got to have a date, though... he can't just be expected to pull a random girl out of the crowd for the first dance, right?" he supposed they'd find out the unknown answer soon enough when the band began to play the first song. honestly, it wouldn't surprise him if james did just choose a random girl... an official date for the evening would tie him down to only one. “i can’t even imagine him dancing for some reason,” frank found himself chuckling slightly as they walked. "how much do you want to bet he trips and falls flat on his face at some point during the night?" okay, so he had more faith in his best friend than that, but it was an amusing mental image.
as they walked into the yule ball frank noticed his date was quite distracted, and when he followed her gaze the cause became clear rather quickly. frank wasn't sure what to think of that... on one hand, scorpius definitely wouldn't be interrupting their evening like a jealous ex. on the other hand... he doubted aubrey would be too flattered that her best friend was on a date with her ex without so much as a word of warning. “well, where do you want to sit?” if she wasn't going to bring up scorpius he wasn't keen on doing so. this evening should be about them, not her ex, and so frank just smiled at her, voice dropping into a teasing tone, "a nice, quiet, secluded corner..." he wasn't serious. not really. frank wasn't the type of guy to be so suggestive, but it was fun to joke around once in a while. instead he led her over to a table for two midway near the wall towards the middle of the great hall, the positioning of the tables around it provided a good view of the dance floor and band should they wish it, but it had enough privacy for conversations, too. he pulled out one of the chairs, offering it for her to sit down if she so chose. "does this look good to you?"

It was just like James to do something like that, honestly she wasn’t sure if James could actually settle down with a girl and make a commitment to her. “how much do you want to bet he trips and falls flat on his face at some point during the night?” and that of course would be another funny and highly likely sight to see. And she knew that James would brush it off without even caring who was laughing at him, he’d actually probably laugh right along with them. It’s one thing she loved about James, she had always looked up to him as an older brother after all.
“a nice, quiet, secluded corner...” she giggled lightly, knowing that he was joking yet at the same time, she didn’t think she would mind, especially with Frank. It seemed as if everything was now falling into place with him around her, it was perfect being with him, and it did help with the fact that things were falling into place to forget about the fact that her best friend is going to the dance with Scorp, without even letting her know. “does this look good to you?” he asked once he had led her to a table that gave them quite a nice view of the dance floor. “It’s perfect viewing for when James falls on his face! |
” she joked lightly before sitting in one of the chairs. She picked up the menu that laid upon the table, curious as to what kind of food they would offer at the Yule ball. Or perhaps a drink to help keep her cool, like butterbeer or something. “ Wow, they got quite a bit of a selection for us tonight, don’t you think?” she asked him lightly before looking over at Frank smiling softly at him, her emerald eyes gleaming with love. "excellent viewing," frank chuckled, looking out to the dance floor. soon enough he planned that he and aubrey would be on it with a mass of other couples, finally dancing together for the first time with each of them knowing who the other was, not just frank being his awkward stalker self practically fainting over the fact that he was dancing with his crush while she was oblivious to his identity all together.
in a move that was a bit odd for the seventh year, frank shifted his chair so that he was nearer to aubrey, leaning over and wrapping his arm around her waist so that he could look at the menu and see the selection she spoke of himself. it served as a good excuse to be close to her, more than anything else. he only had a few more months left at hogwarts with her, next year he'd be off (hopefully) with dragons and she'd still be in school... who knew what level their relationship would be on at that point. he was going to savour every second spent with her up to the end of the year, and that included milking little moments like this one by being around her. "it's the holidays, why shouldn't we be spoiled?" he smiled, referring to the selection of drinks they could get. it wouldn't be a christmas celebration if only water was available.
the thought reminded him, and with no hesitation at all her leaned over and placed the first kiss of the evening on her lips, in no hurry to pull away quickly. "merry christmas, aubrey."
