Lucian's reply came simple, quick, and harsh causing Shailene to raise her eyebrow at him. Shailene felt as if she hadn't done anything wrong to grant such an attitude, she was only being friendly. Either the subject was a sore spot or Shailene wasn't being liked at all. It bothered her that Lucian was like this, she wished she could fix it or at least get through to him but it was obvious from what she already found out about him that his past was littered with too much pain that the task would be almost impossible. But it didn't mean that Shailene was going to quit, not for good, but maybe for tonight.
"I'm truly sorry that your father was less than a man and couldn't stick around for you and robbed you of your relationship with your brother." Shailene said, sorrow in her eyes. She couldn't imagine being in such a position with her own family. Shailene's family was close, she was very well connected to her siblings who were right within these walls. "Maybe one day you'll find him." She added with a bit of hope. Perhaps that is what Lucian needs to change his outlook on everything.
"I must go now. Prefect duties call." Shailene said walking toward the door. "Maybe you should learn to not punish everyone for what has happened to you Lucian. It's only a few people can claim responsibility for that." Shailene said just before she left the room. She wondered if she would ever really talk to him again or maybe it would be just a fluke meeting.

What was with the word sorry? He hadn’t told her all what he had just so she could take pity on him, no. Actually he had no idea why he told her, he barely knew the girl and now she knew what he had put up with, well some of it anyways. He had let his guard down and the damn cheerful girl had gotten in. Well he would let that happen again. He caught the look in her eyes as she spoke and wanted to scoff. What was in the past stayed in the past, it couldn’t be changed and well Lucian didn’t think he wanted to change it much. If he could change it, he'd go after his best friend and refuse to let his father take sweet innocent Gabriel.
Find him, find his brother. There had been thousands of times where he wanted to, simply up and leave but he never could. His mother needed him, no matter how many times she told him to go out and have fun, she was his world now and damn it he was going to take care of her. Nothing was going to take the last remaining thing he cared about. He simply nodded once to Shailene, maybe was a big word. Maybe his brother would come find him instead, there again as that word, maybe.
And just like that it seemed like their time together was up when she spoke of having prefect duties. Ah that was right, she was a prefect, sometimes getting so caught up in a conversation made him forget that little bit. Oh well, he had at least warned her about him roaming the corridors at night, what she wanted to do was up to her, it wasn’t going to stop him. But the last words hit hard. Learn not to punish everyone with what happened. Why the hell couldn’t he, he had been doing it ever since he woke up in St Mungos. A leopard couldn’t change its spots like a werewolf couldn’t change its anger. If he wanted to be angry at the world, then he would be, nothing was stopping him. But she was right, there were only a few people to claim responsibility. Ah screw them, society was the one that accepted those people in the first place, and in so, the world accepted them, so yes he saw his own reasoning to be sound when it can to him being angry at the world. "Maybe you shouldn’t poke your nose too far into things that don’t concern you. You might end up getting hurt," he replied, not caring if it hurt the girl or not. He glanced away for a moment and in that time he heard the rustling of her clothes as she left, he was now alone again, like he was always.
