The nerves were working at full speed as Shailene had to physically remove her finger from her mouth as she was attempting to chew her nails for the tenth time that day. It was only a get to know each other ball rather than a date, but maybe that's why it was so nerve wracking to Shailene. If it had been a date than she would of known who she was going with, hand picked him even, but this was a complete set up. She had no idea who she might encounter tonight but all she knew is that she wanted it to go well. Shailene didn't want to walk away from the Masquerade ball with tears down her eyes which would be the case if she was paired with a Slytherin. She wanted to leave with a smile and a possible new friend. She could only hope the interactions went so well.
With one final check in the mirror after fixing her mask, which matched the yellow accents in her cute little dress, she made her way up to the Great Hall wear the ball was to be held. Shailene's hair was fixed into light curls that bounced a bit as she walked in her silver heels. She adored her outfit and was glad she had picked this dress out. She hasn't really meant to represent the color of her house for it might be a dead give away as to who she was but she just loved the color yellow and how it faired well against her skin. She opted for minimal jewelry with a pair of slim dangle earrings and matching necklace.
The closer Shailene got to the entrance the more those butterflies flapped their wings harder in her stomach. She didn't know if she could go through with this or not. It was going to be quite an event and she really didn't want to miss out on it but Shailene felt as if she might vomit. Taking a few deep breaths to calm herself, Shailene entered the Great Hall to retrieve him number and find her assigned table.
The table was empty which she looked at as a positive though she did hope she wasn't being stand up. Shailene knew she couldn't take it personal if the person didn't show up for they wouldn't have even known they were to be paired with her. So she would sit and wait until someone arrived. There was a note on the table explaining that they could order their food and drinks but simply saying them. "A glass of water please." She said and one appeared instantly. Taking a few sips to refresh her mouth Shailene refused to order not really sure if she could hold the food down right now.

Why oh why did the school have to have these sort of things. It was bad enough with the threat of the Yule Ball but they just had to throw in a masquerade ball, was the professors trying to get someone killed? What was one suppose to wear to these stupid things anyways, he wondered. All he knew about masquerade balls was that a mask was meant to be worn. His was a golden one, simple and not at all girly. He sat on his bed, toying with the string on his mask. She he simply crawl into bed and forget the whole thing, say he wasn’t feeling well because of the upcoming full moon? Eventually he forced himself off the bed and finally pulled something somewhat decent out of his trunk. A yellow chequered shirt his mother had bought him last Christmas and a pair of dark coloured jeans. Yup that would do, he thought as he finished getting dressed, put his shoes on and his mask. Grabbing his wand he headed out, not caring if he was underdressed or not.
Entering the ball, he scoffed at the sight to it, it was too...well he couldn’t exactly find the words for it, but still it wasn’t to his taste. He slowly moved along the tables, wondering if his so called partner was already there or if they felt the same and didn’t want to show. But nearing his table he caught sight of a girl and he sighed. This was going to be a long night, he thought to himself as he walked up and sat down, the corners of his lips twitching into a smile. Might as well try and be nice he thought to himself. "Hi," he started, his voice sounded too sweet for his liking.

The glass of water was cool and refreshing. Shailene had been in need of something to clam her nerves and focus on, the simple glass of water provided just the right escape. Her hazel eyes wandered around the Great Hall, now turned into a nicely decorated ballroom. The dance had a Renaissance theme which was quite pleasantly unexpected. Although she had wished she had known before attending the ball what the theme was for then she could of played the part more appropriately. But a silly little matter wouldn't ruin her evening, the only thing standing in her way of an amazing night was the uncertainty in her partner.
Five and then ten minutes went by without the seat opposite of her being occupied. Every time a person drew nearer to her table she would straighten up and put on a smile for her possible guest but each time the person walked on by to another table. Shailene was becoming worried that she really was being stood up, perhaps the person saw her at the table after getting their number and decided to spend the night else where. A small sigh slipped through the disappointed girl's lips.
Just then a boy walked up to her table causing Shailene to smile brightly. "Hello." She said as she took in his outfit. This boy had chosen a different route in apparel than just a plain tuxedo. "Nice choice in clothes." She said noticing the yellow in his outfit. Maybe he was a Hufflepuff as well, Shailene thought. "How are you this evening?" She asked.

Well now, it wasn’t so bad...right? He glanced around, well on second thought; they could have done something much better with the theme for the night. He looked down at his clothes, were they really a nice choice he wondered, most of the guys he had seen were wearing much more formal attire. "I uh don’t do this much, I had no idea what people wore to this things," he shrugged before his dark eyes took in her appearance. One would have thought that they had somewhat planned on matching colours, yellow. He had to admit though the dress she wore was cute, it suited her. "And you...look nice," argh he hadn’t giving compliments, in fact he hated being this nice. Still there were professors circling the place and he didn’t particularly feel like getting detention if they caught him.
His eyes travelled up to her face. She seemed familiar, yet not at the same time. Perhaps she was a Hufflepuff and he had seen her in the common room. Maybe she was in his classes; it was too hard to think of where he had seen her, or if he knew her. Her voice flooded his ears as she asked him how he was. "Alright I guess," he replied, he wasn’t too thrilled to be there, "What about your evening?" We wanted to get up and leave, to be able to wander the dark corridors like he used to, not sit around trying to make small talk to a girl, ugh, he thought for the millionth time.

The night was young and the possibilities were endless. Shailene had been thinking about this day for a long time, pretty much ever since it was mentioned to the school that the ball would be taking place. It wasn't abnormal for a young woman of her age to imagine a fairy tale evening which she had. Shailene was thankful that her date had been of the opposite sex and her fantasy wasn't shattered due to being paired with a girl. There was still hope to have an almost romantic evening. Shailene knew many of the girls hoped they would end up meeting their future boyfriends this evening, the allure of falling for someone behind a mask was weighing heavy in most of the girls' minds. But Shailene would be happy even if she just walked away with a new friend.
The guy looked just a bit awkward and out of place but Shailene didn't mind a bit. She just gave him a smile and even without the tux her partner looked quite handsome. "Don't worry, I actually like what you picked out of the average formal attire. It shows you have style." She said. "How come you haven't been to one of these before? They are held every year at Hogwarts, at least some type of dance is. Did you always just choose to sit out on these events?' She asked curiously. "Thank you." She said sweetly at his attempt at a comment.
Shailene was pleased that her partner seemed to be a nice guy, she was already thinking that maybe she would have a very nice time at this ball. Although he didn't seemed all that please to be here but Shailene was sure it wasn't her that caused that feeling for him, or at least she hoped not. "Its been pretty good. Mainly spent getting ready for this evening. Took a bit longer on my appearance than what I normally put in. Guess its a girl thing. I think I should of went laid back like you." Shailene said rambling a bit; a habit of hers.

theres a thunder in our hearts baby so much hate for the ones we love TAG: SHAILENE WOOD WORDS: 310 ONE LAST THING: NOTES.
Style, well now if thats what she thought, he wasnt going to correct her. Of course he had style, he was a werwolf after all, the majority of werewolves that he knew of were stylish. He sent her a smile, well what he thought was a smile. He hadnt really smiled on seven years, he had no reason to smile. Seven years, it had been that long since that faithful day. He still had the scars on his body to prove it. On his back to be exact. The jagged red lines tingled as he thought about that fateful day. He had to stop it, thinking of the past didnt change anything, besides he doubted the girl in font of him wanted to be ignored for the whole night.
He caught her question, did he chose to sit out during the dances. "I transferred to Hogwarts this year, i was at Beauxbatons. I never went to the dances there, people didnt like me, they avoided me like the plague," he replied. Would she even know that the plague was... of course, she couldnt be that stupid, everyone knew what it was...right?
Lucian just had to ask didnt he. He knew girls took forever getting ready and this girl wasnt any exception it seemed. She went on about how it took longer than she realised to get ready, saying it was a girl thing. Oh she had that right. Guys they just threw on whatever they got their hands on first that smelt somewhat clean. And then she commented that she should have gone more laid back. Well then why didnt she? He wondered and was about to ask her when he decided that tonight he had vowed to at least try and be nice. "Well you look amazing. Any chance your a hufflepuff or is yellow just your favourite colour?"

Although the evening had just begun Shailene was getting the feeling that everything would go quite well tonight. Along with many thoughts of finding a boyfriend tonight, most of the girls were always worried about being paired up with someone they didn't like, especially the Slytherins who always seemed to be so cruel to her house mates. But it seemed that she was not stuck with someone who had their nose in the air. Shailene could only hope tonight would be so pleasant, she did not wish to leave the ball in tears and hear how well her friends' night went. But as of right now this fear was out of her mind, the boy that was her partner, although reluctant to be there, seemed to speak politely enough.
So he was a transfer, that sort of narrowed down the amount of possibilities her partner could be. Not that Shailene wanted to play a guessing game, she actually just wanted to enjoy herself without the hindrance of identities getting in the way. "How come your schoolmates treated you like that?" Shailene asked, curious but knowing that it might be a sensitive subject she decided to add, "You don't have to share if its too personal. I'll understand. It is a bit of a heavy talk for our first meeting." Shailene said, picking up her glass to take a quick sip of water. "I hope people are treating you much better here." Shailene said with a light smile. No one deserved to be completed avoided as if they didn't exist.
A small blush crept up into Shailene's cheek. It wasn't often she had such compliments. Even though she worked hard to look the way she did tonight it didn't damper the idea behind the compliment. But she would prefer if to receive such a compliment on a normal day; just for no reason at all. "I actually am a Hufflepuff. What about yourself? Are you showing school pride or just favoritism of the color yellow?" Shailene asked with slight excitement. Maybe she knew her date after all.

theres a thunder in our hearts baby so much hate for the ones we love TAG: SHAILENE WOOD WORDS: 354 ONE LAST THING: N/A.
This girl in front of him was dare he say it, nice to talk to. Although she did speak a fair bit, he was quite used to it, well the old him was anyways. Although he did wonder, who was he actually talking to? He still couldn’t pick out why she seemed familiar to him and it was started to irritate him. She hadn’t asked directly who he was, nor had he, but it seemed like she was fine with not knowing who was under the mask...unless she already knew, but then wouldn’t she had asked him directly. Ugh no wonder he never went to this sort of events, they could make someone go insane.
She asked him why Beauxbatons students treated him as such before going on to say that he didn’t have to tell her and honestly he didn’t want to tell her. Wasn’t it better to play ignorant to something like that then to get caught up in it all? Beside how could he tell her that he was a monster that could rip her head off before she even knew what was happening? "Its...uh better if you didn’t know why," he spoke, looking away from her. Were people treating him better, not really, though he never really gave people a chance. "Marginally," he replied, avoiding looking at her.
Oh so he had hit the nail on the head, she was a Hufflepuff, so that was why she looked familiar, he had probably seen her a thousand times in the common room and at the Hufflepuff table during meals. And of course she had to flip the question back on him. "Neither," he replied, "Although I am a Hufflepuff, this was the only decent shirt I had with me. It was a gift from my mother last Christmas." He did not have any house pride, nor did he really have any loyalties to the Hufflepuff house. And as for yellow being his favourite colour, well it wasn’t, like he had said to her it was a present from his mother and his mother always seemed to know what suited him best.

The night before them was beginning to look promising. The conversation was flowing easily enough between the two masked beings without too much of that awkward silence then tend to make people uneasy. Shailene felt calm and in place right now with her table mate. No nerves were rattling her body as she noticed many of the other females in the room seemed to be rather nervous about their encounters. It was obvious she felt as comfortable as she was going to get right in this moment since she dared to ask such personal question, although fitting the topic, probably uncomfortable for someone to answer. She remembered her manners and said that the boy did not need to answer if he hadn't wanted to. Which was a choice he ended up taking. Shailene was only slightly disappointed because she had wanted to get to the know the person she would be spending her night with but she would respect his wishes. Sending a small smile in his direction she nodded her understanding.
"Well I mean the year has only started. I'm sure it'll get better over time. You'll have friends by the end of the year which should make any other years you might have to spend here more pleasant." Shailene said. She would be his friend. Shailene beamed when he stated that he was a Hufflepuff, glad to know that they were housemates. She tried to ignore the facts in her head because she did not want to piece this together right this moment but it was becoming obvious who her date was. There wasn't many Hufflepuff transfers running around the school.
"Well your mother has good taste because, although casual, the shirt looks really nice on you with your dark hair." Shailene said with a smile.

theres a thunder in our hearts baby so much hate for the ones we love TAG: SHAILENE WOOD WORDS: 408 ONE LAST THING: N/A.
Friends, he used to have one of those. She had been a damn good friend too, but good things never lasted. Seven bloody long years it has been since he set eyes on her. He didn’t know what she looked like now, or where she was. Heck she could be dead and he'd not know. At least he only had the rest of this year and next year to go before he finished school, it was what he kept telling himself every time he wanted to up and quit. Could he count his kin as friends, the other werewolves here? He supposed he could. At least he was being friendly with them and he had no reason to hate them. One would think that one would hate all werewolves because of the curse, but in fact he'd rather stand by them, defend them and such, they were the ones he didn’t have to hate because they knew exactly what it was like, the pain, the judgement from others, the power and strength, they knew it all. So even though he didn’t think he had friends, the realization that he did hit him. But none were regular human witches and wizards, none like her. "I guess, I’m not holding my breath though," he shrugged. This girl in front of him sounded very optimistic for one who didn’t really know him. She sounded very much like one of the girls he had spoken too once before. He forced himself to stop trying to figure out who his date was, it would ruin the evening and spoil the illusion of normalcy.
Lucian hadn’t been fishing for compliments but couldn’t help the faint smile appear when she complimented his mother, a woman she had never even met. It looked nice against his dark hair, well now he never really took much notice of that. "She always does seem to pick out the best things, must be a mother thing," he replied as if it were nothing. He'd definitely have to tell his mother of the compliment though, she deserved to be praised for something she had chosen.
Glancing around, he saw a few people dancing. Was that what one done during a masquerade ball? Looking back to his mystery date, he wondered if she liked dancing. Stupid question, he thought to himself, what woman didn’t like dancing. "Would you uh...care to dance?" he asked, nodding once over at the other couples dancing.

Friendships was obviously a touchy subject for them to be talking about. A pained looked crossed his face and for a moment Shailene wondered what exactly happened to cause such a look. But it only took a second for her to remember that her date was a transfer. A transfer would, of course, miss their own friends back home and be sadden by the scenes of friends doing stuff together here. Although he had stated earlier that he was not treated well back at his old school, Shailene was sure that he had to at least have a few friends to get along with.
Suddenly the look was gone and the guy sitting at her table seemed indifferent about the idea of friendships, as if it didn't mean a thing to him. "Well I'll be your friend." Shailene pipped up. At least she knew the boy was in her own house so there wasn't much of a chance that he was someone she wouldn't really like after the masks came off. "I mean if you want. You seem nice enough, can't see what the harm would be." Shailene said with a bright smile, hoping that she had really made a new friend. She loved to meet new people and develop a friendship because Shailene always learned something new from those experiences.
When Shailene saw that small faint of a smile cross his lips, it made her feel good. He hadn't really smiled since he been here, not one that wasn't forced. "Well you know how that saying goes, mothers know best." Shailene said. It was obvious the boy really appreciated his mother and all that she did for him. That was an endearing thought to Shailene.
Around them music filled the air and couples began to dance. Her date was beginning to notice them too and she wondered if he would be asking her to dance. Although Shailene wouldn't really mind if they stayed put and kept the conversation going however it was a dance and therefore dancing needed to take place. Her date spoke up and asked if she wanted to dance and she smiled lightly at him. "Sure, I would love to. But if you don't like dancing don't feel obligated to take me." Shailene said not wanting to force the boy to do anything he didn't truly want to do.
