lyra pushed open the door to the hog's head, glancing about and noticing that the place was bearly empty - just two people residing in straight backed wooden chairs. one wore a veil over her (presumably) face, and lyra pondered as to whether it happened to be a hag - knowing that there was a few that wandered into the pub on occasion. the other, who sat in the darkest corner, was an older man with a long scuffy beard that scratched at the top of his robes whenever he bobbed his head (apparently agreeing with himself)
lyra pulled a face slightly and headed over to the bar, quickly ordering herself a butterbeer, much to the apparent irritation of the bartender; who frowned and slammed a dusty bottle onto the counter and opened his grubby hand for the money. lyra raised her eyebrows slightly at the attitude but decided against commenting - after all she didn't want to get thrown out or anything - and simply passed over the money. she bearly held back a roll of her grey eyes as the guy checked each coin before pushing the drink toward her, and she took it before he could change his mind and threaded her way through the tables toward one out the way of the freaky other two costumers.
you might wonder as to why lyra was here, all by herself - particulary as her usual and much prefered place to drink was the three broomsticks. the answer? she'd promised to meet up with her brother today. they'd talked constantly throughout the year, sending owl's back and forth through the use of lyra's newly aquired 'bolt' - a fluffy brown owl whom she already adored. he was a little quirky, but delivered his letters fast and seemed to enjoy perching on her shoulder at random intervals throughout the day - once appearing during her herbology lesson and refusing to be removed from said shoulder perch even when the plants tried to attack him.
still she and her brother had kept in good contact, and they'd decided to set up a time to meet. benji had suggested hogsmead, seeing as it was easy for them both to get to - though he had to go a little further out of his way than she did - and lyra had suggested the hogs head as it would be less crowded than the three broomsticks, therefore there would be no worry of hving to shout to hear each other, or people knocking into them or spilling drinks over them and all sorts. lyra smiled lightly as settled into her chair near the left wall, sipping her drink and waiting for her big brother to appear...

Despite all of the hype, the fact that kid after kid set their sights on the auror’s office and the fact that Benji had wanted to be one himself since he was little, it was often a very, very boring job. Don’t get him wrong, he loved his job and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world, but there were far more days of desk work and research than there were action packed exciting chases and arrests. Luckily for him, that generally meant that when he wanted to disappear for a few hours, or even an entire day, to visit someone else (like, say, his little sister) it could almost always be arranged.
It was kind of weird, in a family of only two kids, that their ages should be separated by as many years as Benji’s and Lyra’s were. Some older brothers in a scenario like theirs might completely blow off a baby sister born when they were more preoccupied with models and training brooms and ‘so much more important things’, but Benji had never minded having such a little sister. He’d gotten to watch her grow up, take her first steps, speak her first words, and transform from a troublesome infant to a happy healthy child. Sure, most of his so-called memories of things when they were young were probably just fabricated in his unconscious mind because he had been too young to actually remember them, but just the fact that he had been old enough to now be not sure of whether memories of when she was young were real or false was something he rather liked. Sure, it might be great to have a sibling closer to his own age, and yes, having a sibling closer to his own age would have reduced a hell of a lot of his stress a decade ago, but… this worked out.
It was a mere apparition away from the office to Hogsmeade where Benji ‘landed’ with a crack right in front of the familiar shrieking shack. A smile tugged at his lips at the memories of this place… he did believe it was where he’d asked his second girlfriend to go out with him towards the end of his third year. What he’d been thinking he wasn’t sure. She was a Slytherin, he queen bee of her group, and definitely gorgeous enough with half vela blood running through her veins, but the two had nothing in common. Benji had been driven by hormones alone, and their ‘relationship’ had been terminated by attitudes and arguments a mere two weeks later, but it was still amusing to remember. Young love was definitely an unpredictable and often foolish thing, not that experienced love was any better.
It was a short walk to his destination which, unlike the shrieking shack, had not been a frequent visit spot for Benji when he was a student at Hogwarts. He hadn’t been a rebellious kid. How could you be prefect (if only for a few months) and a troublemaker? Impossible. He’d hung out at the more common places for students to spend their time; Honeydukes, or the Three Broomsticks. It was only after he’d left the school, and life had settled down, that he’d ventured to the shadier bar in the village, where he’d now meet up with his little sister for the first time all year.
Apparently Lyra’s reasoning of the ease of communicating in this bar had been well founded; with only two wizarding customers they would likely be able to whisper to each other from across the room and still hear the other. He quietly shut the door behind him, easily spotting the familiar head of blonde hair over by the left wall and grinning as he walked towards her, sliding into the chair across from her. “Aren’t you a bit too young to be drinking?” he teased, nodding his head towards the bottle in her hand. Of course, he was sure it was harmless, but teasing about alcoholic beverages was a good icebreaker, right?

lyra sipped her butterbeer and glanced about her, finding little of interest in the plain bar. she glanced toward the only two other inhabitants of hogs head occasionally, simply slightly curious as to what they might be here for.. one of them appeared as though he was trying to drown his sorrows. the beared man ..he was swaying slightly in his seat, downing whatever contents was in one of the glasses out of, with what lyra could count as six, glasses infront of him.
when the old man's hood slipped back slightly to reveal a set of clear cut blue eyes, the inpenetrable gaze hard and cold as he glared at lyra she quickly looked away and acted as though she had yet to notice him. she may have been able to take on the late great jacob warrington - to which she bearly held herself from rolling her eyes - it was never smart to even look at someone funny in this pub for fear of starting something you shouldn't have.. people tended to be a bit of the 'darker side' here, and if they thought you'd given them a rude look or something of the sort, usually they'd stand and start up a stupid duel. not the smartest idea for that to happen with lyra.
she heard the door open and glanced up from looking down at the drink warming between her palms to see her older brother heading toward her. she grinned widely and made to stand. "benji!" she said happily, going to throw her arms around him in a hug. she didn't care if the other customers were staring, she was going to hug her brother whether they liked it or not. she pulled back and smiled lightly, going to sit back down and catching his, “Aren’t you a bit too young to be drinking?” she rolled her grey eyes and shook her head. "oh calm down brother...it's only butterbeer." she smiled slightly, knowing he was only teasing but saying it anyway.

"benji!" It was impossible for the auror to not grin when his sister jumped up, wrapping her arounds him in a hug he warmly returned. Not to inflate her ego, but he really did miss her when it wasn't the holidays and she was tucked away at Hogwarts where he really couldn't see her. Sure, it might be a simple thing to sneak off to Hogwarts once in a while, but she had a life and didn't need her big brother dropping in to check up on her. Doing that would be a bit too... parenty. Yeah, that was the right word. It didn't matter if Benji had been looking after her for many years, he was still her brother and not her parent no matter how protective he was of her. He knew how annoying it was to have parental units smothering you with their worry and attention. Intruding on Hogwarts to check up on her just because he missed her would probably just annoy her as it would have done him if his parents had done it to him back when he was a student at Hogwarts.
"oh calm down brother...it's only butterbeer." Benji smirked. "It could be laced with firewhiskey for all I know... teenagers like you are tricky. Can't be trusted," he teased. His little sister, as far as he was aware, was nowhere near one of those troublemakers who liked to sneak alcohol into the school for late night parties (it had certainly been going on even when Benji was only in his fifth year, and he doubted times had changed so much that teenagers had matured in the last decade). Lyra was a good kid, though. ...Well, he probably shouldn't be thinking of her as a kid seeing as, by wizarding ways, she was an adult... but she'd always be his little sister to the auror.
"So," he began, leaning across the table with a small smirk on his lips, the type that said 'spill all'. He didn't have a drink yet, but didn't think he really needed one to enjoy this time with his sister. He could wait a few minutes before getting himself a butterbeer or whatever he might want. "How's your seventh year so far? Have you run the Hufflepuff team ragged yet? Still staying away from boys 'til you're thirty?"

she smiled when he hugged her back, feeling that usual swell of relief when she hugged him before going to sit down. maybe it was stupid ..but after loosing both her parents she was always scared that she'd loose benji too..she couldn't help but relax once she was certain he was alright. she didn't say anything about it to people, it was none of their business really, and well...she knew they'd find it silly but when you lost pretty much all your family suddenly, you couldn't help but feel scared you'd loose the rest. benji was all she had left of family now, she had to keep him safe, whether she was the younger sibling or what.
"It could be laced with firewhiskey for all I know... teenagers like you are tricky. Can't be trusted," lyra laughed lightly and rolled her light grey eyes, shaking her head and glancing at him. "teenagers..." she picked out and raised an eyebrow. technically she was an adult now, but she let that slide and continued on, "..like me? what on earth are you insinuating?" she joked and grinned lightly. well..she wasn't one opposed to having a good party every now and then..and she'd been known to sneak off and grab some cases of firewhisky for a part or two before...but she was responsible nonetheless.
"So," lyra smirked slightly and raised her eyebrows, waiting for him to continue. she'd always felt priveledged with benji for a brother...he was both her parents - someone she could go to for advice, help or support and protection..but he was also her brother, encouraging her to be a tpyical teen, asking about hogwarts stories. best of both worlds. "How's your seventh year so far? Have you run the Hufflepuff team ragged yet? Still staying away from boys 'til you're thirty?" she grinned and rolled her eyes slightly, sipping her drink. "pretty good... me and brad found another secret passageway..into the slytherin common room..greatest descovery ever!" she grinned. "uhm let's see..picked a fight with warrington-" lyra rolled her eyes again "-the team's going well...mostly...and actually...there is a boy...called will.." she chewed her lip and glanced at him, waiting for some big brother speach she was sure about to head her way.

"teenagers... ..like me? what on earth are you insinuating?" Benji chuckled, shaking his head slightly. "Why don't you... just mull that over," he advised with a grin. He should be more than thanjful that he had a sibling like Lyra and not some of the more... rambunctious kids around Hogwarts. Like any school where teenagers were lumped together, you had about ever class of teen there. The studious, the pranksters, the enthusiastic, the bullies, the alcoholics (sad that they could exist even in the seventh year...), the smokers... his sister was a good kid, he knew that. After all, he'd never been called to the school to have to meet with Kingsley because of something his little sister had done, right? Nah, like all siblings she infuriated him sometimes, and like all big brothers he had hi days when he wished he was an only child, but then... if he was, he'd have no one any more, so he always felt bad whenever he let those thoughts cross his mind.
"pretty good... me and brad found another secret passageway..into the slytherin common room..greatest descovery ever!" Benji reflected her grin, knowing that his little sister could easily fall under the 'prankster' category of student at Hogwarts. She had a good sense of humor, so there was never any harm done, and he rather enjoyed hearing her stories of pranks. "Have you used it yet to wreak havoc?"
"uhm let's see..picked a fight with warrington-the team's going well...mostly...and actually...there is a boy...called will.." Two things in that information obviously caught the older brother's attention. His mind was tormented with which fact to attack first, so he decided to go in the order that the info was presented to him. "Warrington, as in that hulking six foot whatever Slytherin guy?" he'd caught a glimpse of him a few times when he'd visited the school for whatever reason... it wasn't exactly the type of guy he liked to think of his little sister taking on. He knew she was capable of looking after herself, but still... against that hulk? "Jesus, Lyra... what provoked that and how bad did he get you?" It wasn't that he doubted his little sister, it was just that... well, Warrington? Then he relaxed a bit for the next topic: "Will, huh? Spill."

"Why don't you... just mull that over," lyra just rolled her eyes and shook his head, a small grin on her face. she may be a prankster and have had her fair share of detentions over the years but she wasn't all that bad. she'd never hurt anyone..severely..through a duel or a prank gone wrong. she always did her homework even if sometimes it wasn't to her greatest ability, but she tried.
she caught his familiar grin and knew he was finding it as amusing as usual that she'd found another secret passageway with her best friend. she always indulged in telling her good prankster stories to her older brother, because she knew he found them amusing. "Have you used it yet to wreak havoc?" she grinned mischeviously and finished her drink, nodding. "of course! as soon as we figured out where it led we went crazy.. flying magazines...faces full of water...all that sort of thing; nobody seemed to figure it out at all!" she said with a small laugh and shrug. it had been incredibly amusing watching all the slytherin's stupid antics as they tried to figure it out. they hadn't..and she didn't plan on ever letting them find out.
"Warrington, as in that hulking six foot whatever Slytherin guy?" lyra nodded carefully, her eyes on her brothers face, waiting for him to say something...she doubted he'd approve simply because she was his younger sister..but she could take take of herself and she'd proved it. "Jesus, Lyra... what provoked that and how bad did he get you?" she shook her head. "me and will pulled a prank on him.. but we didn't get away fast enough and he pulled his wand out on me so .. i accepted the challange." she shrugged... lyra never backed away from a challange - ever. she bit her lip as he asked how bad she'd been got, and she shifted in her seat and looked down at her glass. "well uhm .. he got me with diffindo but it's all healed, i'm fine." yes.. a particulary nasty wound he'd inflicted upon her - slashing a deep gash right across her mid-drift...she'd been lucky will had been there, she'd lost a lot of blood very quickly, fallen unconcious and woken up in the hospital wing courtesy of him. though she'd won the duel with knocking that warrington back hard enough to send him sprawling and breaking his arm, she had had to spend several days in the hospital wing, and she would have the scar for the rest of her life.
"Will, huh? Spill." she would rather skip onto a different subject altogether from the duel ..but this subject was just as bad. she sighed and shifted in her seat again, looking at her older brother. "well.. i mean we've kind of..being going out since the start of the year..." she didn't want to say more than what benji asked to know.

"of course! as soon as we figured out where it led we went crazy.. flying magazines...faces full of water...all that sort of thing; nobody seemed to figure it out at all!" "That's my sister!" Benji couldn't help but grin envisioning the scene his sister put in his head, havoc in the Slytherin commons room... c'mon, what student, or alumni, of Hogwarts who had been in Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, or Hufflepuff didn't love to think of giving Slytherins a hard time? It might was well be declared a school wide past time. Most Slytherins weren't the most likeable people, and it was easy to let that stereotype control your view of every Slytherin student so that you never felt guilty about giving any of them hell. He wasn't as big of a prankster as his sister, actually he'd leaned more towards the goody-two-shoes side when he was a student at Hogwarts, but he had gotten into a few arguments or pranks with Slytherins 'back in the day' like anyone else.
"me and will pulled a prank on him.. but we didn't get away fast enough and he pulled his wand out on me so .. i accepted the challenge." At least Warrington hadn't attacked his sister in cold blood... that would be something to piss the auror off, and while he didn't want to seem like too much of a protective parent to Lyra, he could damn well be a proper protective brother to beat the crap out of whoever hurt his little sister. He didn't care if he was eight years older than the guy... if you messed with his little sister you messed with him. If Lyra had inadvertently started the confrontation, though, he would have to accept that he'd need to back off... but Lyra seemed very hesitant to tell him exactly what had happened to her, so he was saving judgement as she stared away from him. "well uhm .. he got me with diffindo but it's all healed, i'm fine." Benji automatically cringed, a scowl growing on his lips. Diffindo was a nasty spell... he could imagine the damage it would have done to his baby sister, and he didn't want to. "You need to stay away from him, Lyra... I'm sure he won't be forgetting that any time soon, and he could do far worse damage next time..."
"well.. i mean we've kind of..being going out since the start of the year..." That wasn't a very satisfying amount of information... certainly not enough to appease the older brother. "C'mon, Lyra... you gotta give me more than that. When I said spill, I meant spill all."

"That's my sister!" lyra grinned widely and looked at her brother. yes..it had been a very lyra-ish thing to do..and she had no doubt she'd keep going back to that tunnel whenever she needed to get a slytherin back for something, or felt like taking some frustrations out on an ass of a person..of course, it had to remain a secret - if too many people caught wind of the passageway, slytherins were bound to get told and then..cover blown. of course, lyra did plan on passing the secret of the passageway down to a fellow student she felt deserved it..someone who showed good promise in the pranking world of course.
she sighed as she saw benji cringe and scowl when she downplayed the pain of what jacob had retaliated with. it could have been worse in honesty..least that was the only thing he'd hit her with..and lucky that will had shot his wand out of jacobs hand - he'd been about to erase her memory of it all. now that would have terrifyed her most. jacob didn't scare her.. when he came after her - she had no doubt that he and his little friends would - she'd be ready and she could handle it...but the idea that he would so readily, without concious erase someone's memory just like that...to cover his own stupid tracks? that frightened her. it was the sign of someone who might just stop at nothing...
"You need to stay away from him, Lyra... I'm sure he won't be forgetting that any time soon, and he could do far worse damage next time..." she sighed but made no comment, not wishing to disagree with her brother right now. there was no way she could stay clear of him; he woul undoubtably be after her now..and she wasn't going to run away and hide, or stay low. no..she would be ready for them, but she would as always keep her head high and continue life as normal. no need to be scared of what was round the corner, or every little noise.
"C'mon, Lyra... you gotta give me more than that. When I said spill, I meant spill all." lyra rolled her eyes. "alright alright...." she gave in, sighing quietly and shaking her head...there was no denying her brother sometimes. "well he's sixteen...in his fifth year..fellow puff...and ironically, he's a prefect." she smiled slightly at that, thinking about how amusing it was that a prankster like her could have fallen for a guy who enjoyed enforcing hogwarts laws.... "we kinda knew each other anyway..and then he caught me flying past hours...and rather than dock points he walked me up to the castle, and well seeing as it was already past hours and we were out of bed, we went to the kitchens and grabbed a hot chocolate...and then the next day we met up and then..he just asked me out.." she explained with a grin and a faint blush, remembering it all as if it were yesterday.

"alright alright...." Benji smirked, leaning forward slightly on the table like some eager gossiping teenager, trying to make a joke out of the position. Sure, he was interested in what was going on with his baby sister, but he wasn't that interested. He respected that his little sister needed her privacy, but as the big brother he felt it was his duty to be wary of every boy entering her life... kind of like he was sure his dad would have been. It was part of the older male instincts, he supposed. Lyra might be an adult now, but she would always be his baby sister and so he'd always be protective of her against any guy, and in his opinion no one was good enough for his baby sister.
"well he's sixteen...in his fifth year..fellow puff...and ironically, he's a prefect." Benji nodded along to all of the information. He should have guessed a puff... a lot of relationships at Hogwarts were. They made it easy to get to know each other and spend time with each other in the commons room in the evenings, or at any time of day, really. A prefect... Benji approved of that. He'd been named a prefect, and had carried out the duties proudly until he'd had to leave the school because of their parent's tragedies. But then... wait, what had she said? Sixteen? Fifth year? ...Oh no.
"we kinda knew each other anyway..and then he caught me flying past hours...and rather than dock points he walked me up to the castle, and well seeing as it was already past hours and we were out of bed, we went to the kitchens and grabbed a hot chocolate...and then the next day we met up and then..he just asked me out.." Benji nodded politely along, though his mind was kind of stuck on the fact that she was dating a kid two years younger than herself. Well, okay, one year, but two grades and... it didn't sit well with Benji. He was very conventional and traditional... he had this set view in his brain of the man in a relationship being elder than the girl. Maybe it was because he always viewed the man as the one to have to protect the woman, and he didn't think that that could really work when the guy was younger. "He uh... sounds like a good kid..." Benji forced himself to smile, clearly rather distracted. He wanted to be supportive, but he just couldn't get his damned mind off of the age difference...

"He uh... sounds like a good kid..." she frowned at her brother, knowing immediatly that he was thinking about one very specific detail she'd just given, and it irritated her right off. "don't." she warned him with a shake of her head. she did not want him to go into how the guy should be older, how she shouldn't be dating someone a year younger than herself. she didn't want to hear it...she knew him well enough that that was what he was preoccupied with. "will is a decent guy...he's mature, he's smart, he looks out for me and he loves me. don't even think about going into a speach about him being a year younger. it doesn't matter." she spoke carefully, the frown on her face said enough.
she really liked will...well in fact she loved him, and he loved her - that was all that mattered in her mind. they'd been with each other since september, and she hadn't cared about the age difference through the entire time and she knew she never would. so what if he was two grades below her...what did her brother expect her to do? dump him and find a guy older than her? hell no. not only because she really liked will, but the fact that that was such a pointless reason to go out with someone- because they're older. she was one of the older in her year, that would already make it hard enough..cut out the jerks and people already with someone then that left her with who anyway?
lyra sighed and looked at her brother warningly, not wanting to butt heads over this..but she really did like will, and she wanted him to get on with her brother whenever they might happen to meet...but how could they is benji was just going to be thinking he was right about this age difference thing. lyra ran a hand through her hair and looked down at her empty cup with a frown, waiting for benji to say something and sure that if he did start of the age difference she'd just walk out. she didn't care if a couple of the students commented on it..it wasn't unusual at hogwarts, plenty of girls went out with guys younger than them, and it wasn't different outside of hogwarts either. it didn't matter to her and will, and that was what counted.

Benji didn’t want to fight. Really, he didn’t. He was happy his sister was happy, he just wished that she was happy in a relationship that would make him entirely happy as well. He couldn’t help it, she was his baby sister and he was very protective of her. Any guy good enough for her should be able to protect her as well, right? He shouldn’t have to ever wonder and worry about her with some guy because he should be confident the said guy should be able to look after her. But… two years below her? He knew what he’d been like, what most of the kids his age had been like, back when he was fifteen. He was currently imagining some scrawny, short, twig-thin runt of a kid with blonde hair, blue eyes, and the muscle makeup of a newborn babe. Not exactly the ideal guy for him to picture his little sister with…
Oh, he was sure this guy was a good guy. Lyra had more brains, at least he thought she did, than to go after some mindless jerk of a kid who was only being nice to her to be able to say he dated an older girl, but he still couldn’t help but worry. He knew the games that hormonal teenage guys like to play… swooning after the older girls, basically because they were so far out of the boy’s league it was ridiculous… maybe this guy was just a really good actor, but a jerk underneath? Once that seed of doubt was planted, it was hard to chase away. Benji just didn’t want to see his little sister hurt. Was that so terrible of him?
But if he said anything… she would flip out. He wouldn’t put it above her to just stand up and storm away without another word at him, though a swear or two might be said. And it had been too long since he had seen his little sister… he didn’t want this meeting ruined, or for her to go to a not speaking to him strategy, now. However much he disagreed with this relationship, he knew she could tell, but he had to keep that silent to himself. Sure, she could probably read his expression and body language, but saying ‘I don’t approve’ would probably just make the damned situation ten times worse. So he just sighed, running his hand through his hair and trying to find the most diplomatic way to respond… ”Well… I guess it just means that if he hurts you, it’ll be that much easier for me to beat the crap out of him, right?” Diplomatic. Good job, Benji.

she knew he was only being like this because he was her older brother, and in fact they were the only family the other had left. it was natural for him to be protective of each other, especially with him being older and male and all, but sometimes she wished he wouldn't. she wasn't a silly little child anymore, she wasn't completely incompetent, she could look out for herself. sure, okay so she'd been put in the hospital wing once this year from that warrington guy, but she'd still beat him back pretty damn well and he'd become worse off than she had. if she had to look after herself she could, and if will ever hurt her, then she could protect herself, she just wished benji would stop trying to be her dad sometimes, because as much as he could be parental and that was nice sometimes, he wasn't - he was her brother.
she knew what it sounded like, she remembered being in her fifth year and how some of the guys were as puny as the girls, but will wasn't like that, he was quite muscular and he was already taller than lyra - probably would grow even taller. he was pretty grown up for a sixteen year old, it wasn't like he was twelve. she wished benji could see that. he seemed to have a problem with every one of her boyfriends - the one's she told him about anyway. not that she'd had loads but she had had a few, and several drunken things or a fling here or there that she hadn't told him about but still. when benji was being her brother, they sometimes talked about everything, almost like best friends, but when he got parental, that was when she started to keep things from him.
she ran a hand through her hair and sighed, shaking her head a little. he didn't get it. she was always supportive of his girlfriends, even if they were really bitchy to lyra she shut her mouth and she made sure they didn't hurt him. they could be whatever they wanted to her - nice was always best - but if they really cared for her brother then she could handle it. a lot of girls didn't like the idea that their boyfriend had a younger sibling who they had to look out for. it made her wonder vaugely if anything was happening for him in that department right now but it wasn't the moment to ask. she heard him sigh and she scowled and looked away for the moment. ”Well… I guess it just means that if he hurts you, it’ll be that much easier for me to beat the crap out of him, right?” her scowl deepened and she huffed, folding her arms. "right." she muttered, almost snapping. great, way to make the situation worse.
( incredibly sorry for the wait! hope you can forgive me :/ )
