Dunstable was praying for his spell to hit the Giant Squid in time for he had noticed that the Giant Squid wasn’t exactly happy with the curse that Yori used. And the Giant Squid and started to wiggle its tentacles around and Dunstable pumped his fist in the air out of joy seeing that it had let go off Yori thanks to the tickling spell. He could also see the relived look on Yori’s face glad that she wasn’t in the grip of the Giant Squid anymore. “Alright let’s go! We shouldn’t be that far away from the dry land
” he said with a smile as the two of them began to swim once more. “ Dun, thank you so much. This... this is amazing” he heard the young Chinese girl laugh and Dunstable couldn’t help but laugh along with her. “ Well I’m glad that the ticking spell managed to hit in time,” he said with a wide smile on his face. And then he could see it. Land. Exactly what they’ve hoped to be reaching soon and they were finally there. Quickly the two of them got out of the water. “ Nox” he whispered softy to put his wand light out, there was no need for it as it was daylight out and they weren’t in the depths of the Black Lake anymore. “ arefacio,” he said as he twirled his wand around him and then over to Yori before she started to run off. It was the perfect drying spell and had made their clothes completely dry; unfortunately they still smelt like the lake. And then he began to run with Yori, hoping that it wouldn’t take them too long to get to the brooms. He wondered how far along the other teams where. Had any of them gotten out of the lake? Or were they the first to get out of the lake? Well it seemed that he wouldn’t find out until they reached the end and found out what place they were in. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

If he drowned because of this little pest, he was sure that all grindylows would be extinct before they could anyone could say whoops. He was thankful that he had caught Theia's attention as he watched her turn towards him. She was lucky she didn’t have to put up with being strangled; it was definitely something he didn’t want to feel again. He heard her telling him to hold on; well what else was he meant to do? The next moment he heard her cast stupefy and he froze, hoping the creature was too distracted by him to notice the oncoming attack.
And it was, he felt the fingers loosen around his neck and it spun him into action. He tore at the creature, finally able to get it off and allowed it to drift away, not caring if the creature recovered. Looking at Theia he nodded a thanks as he begun swimming again. His lungs burned from the lack of air, but he couldn’t afford to take a few minutes to breath, they needed to win this task. He figured he'd give himself the luxury of taking a couple of deep breaths once they were out of the water and not before.
They were so close to the edge of the lake now, a few more strokes and he was able to touch the edge. He watched Theia get out and was about to lift himself out when she offered a hand. Grabbing it, it pulled himself up. He heard someone else getting out of the water. Damn Hufflepuff had gotten away from the squid. He casted a quick drying charm over himself. Running was going to be Theia's strong point if she were running as a tiger. He glanced at her, oh so she was. It allowed him to take those much needed breaths of air. His throat hurt, but he didn’t dare stop to cast any healing charms, it was a waste of time, he thought, things like that could be looked after later. Edging closer to the forest, he waited til Theia was ready before turning and entering the forest. It was at that moment he wondered how in Merlin's name was he going to keep up with a tiger.

Claire kept on swimming. She had made sure Jaycen was behind her at all times and once he caught up, they were swimming side by side. Her focus now was to get to the shore of the lake, then it would all be smooth sailing from there. The two Ravenclaws were pretty comfortable on brooms, they were both part of the Quidditch squad, so Claire was definitely not worried about flying. And she had been in the forest before, at night. The task was taking place during the day, it would definitely be easier.
Her mind was set on getting to the shore. She could see where the land and water connected, they were so close but...
Claire looked to her side, where her partner had previously been and saw absolutely nothing. She panicked again. Was the Squid going after them again?! Her body quickly reacted, if Jaycen had been taken by the Squid, she couldn't just float there doing nothing.
It took her less than ten full seconds to find him, only just a few feet of water below her, she saw him struggling. Claire swan down, unaware that she was about to get in some trouble too. Her wand was tightly in her grip and she was going to free Jaycen when she felt something wrap around her neck. What the hell?
The gridylow's body was pulling her down. For a small creature, it sure had a lot of strength. Claire was so close to Jayce, if only she could get to him. Her body tried to swim against the creature' force, achieving to move closer and close to her partner. She tried to shake the thing off herself, but it wouldn't budge.
"Relashio!" Her wand was pointed at her own neck, where the little vicious water creature had a grip of her. Once she said the spell, she was instantly pulled down, but she saw Jaycen body movement and knew he couldn't do anything to save himself. In a final attempt, Claire pointed her wand at him and, "Relashio." was tried once more.

James was just traveling along as he waited for Alaya a little bit, but he expected her to be a better swimmer than him. Of course Alaya was the only one who had been accepted as what she was for now, but he wondered what would happen when everyone found out about her. James had little time to dwell on that as he felt his head bump against a fat little bird with it's puffy wings that would dive down and peck his eyes if he wasn't careful. Swimming under it, he soon just looked at strangely and then gestured to Alaya to tie it's feet together or attempt to to make it float away. There was really no need for charms for this since it was obvious they had to make something out of it.
Finally James showed Alaya what he was thinking and attempted to take the Plimpy's legs out from underneath it right away. Perhaps to make it so that it would indeed tie up and float away of course he needed co-operation from his team mate to get the other leg. Surely this would be a feat no one had ever thought of, or it was just common sense since it said it -right- in the magical creatures book. Of course, Alaya was really a great team mate to have on this one, but it was just a simple plimpy he hoped. Even if they got at least a poor attempt it would be fine as long as he could make up for it with the flying. Since James knew he could actually win that one.

It wasn't her ideal situation but it wasn't bad either. After getting away from the squid she was feeling a bit better about the whole swimming thing and they were good on time with the spell. Sure there were two teams that were ahead of them, as far as she could tell but they could easily catch up in the forest and with the flying challenge. Alaya figured James would be the best one with the flying all things considered. It wasn't that she was a bad flier but she wasn't much of a fast flier. Speed was only something she had when she had her two feet firmly on the ground.
Alaya noticed James running well more so swimming into a Plimpy. His idea of tying the legs together was kind of interesting and could work. The Merfolk did it all the time to deal with the pest. Alaya griped the other leg to help James tie the creatures legs together. Her hand slipped once. It was a bit annoying but she griped it this time with more force. She needed to not worry about hurting the creature at this point. With the Squid yes but not with this annoyance. She was careful not to draw blood with her grip but she knew that the Plimpy was hurting somewhat by the expression it its small beaded black eyes.

theia paused in her steps, digging the large paws into the dusty earth, feeling the claws sink easily into the ground beneath her. she had heard scorpius behind her but she'd already bounded ahead too far of him...they couldn't afford to loose each other - they could end up getting caught by creatures seperated..and whilst they were both strong people, she knew they would work better in this as a team. so... with the thought of her dignity and pride at heart, she growled to herself and spun on her back paws, turning back toward him. theia stopped sharply and looked up at him with a grimance, snarling quietly and shaking her head.
she looked at scorpius then nodded her head toward her back as if to clearly say 'fine get the hell on then'. she could still run preety damn fast even with his added weight as a tigress..it would still be an advantage to them both. of course..it would involve her pushing aside her pride but she'd already done that for now - yet if he pulled out even one strand of fur..she'd maul him alive...
she growled quietly, grumbling more than anything. scorpius should have learn how to become an animagus ages ago like she had..it would have saved them this time and her effort right now. she made to push herself forward, digging her claws into the dirty in order to get a better grip and propell herself faster into the forest. she caught the sent of a creature well before she saw it and she gave a snarl, curling her lip over the long sharp fangs in warning to both the creature and scorpius...a redcap....without able to cast spells it would be down to scorpius right now...unless she changed back which would take time and effort...

James was glad that the plimpy had been so easy to defeat and then let go as he made sure Alaya let go at the same time. Then making a forward gesture motion with his hand, it was time to head to the brooms while he prayed a miracle would happen to let them win this thing, but he didn't want to do it in the first try at all. Only now could he actually focus on moving forward and felt every inc h of his being feeling the pressure of the first task. What on Earth was making him so unfocused right now? As his thoughts were of winning and nothing else, maybe that was just dumb luck he was wishing he had. Invoking such look was never really up to him in the long run.
Sighing softly as he felt his bubble deflating a little and then waved his wand to lighten up the spell again. Speaking outwards to the water, and then as he reached shore soon pulled himself up out of the water. Looking back and wading in the water to look for his team-mate not really having time to finally glance over his shoulder. Each of the teams were on the race to the finish and James wasn't going to let Hufflepuff beat him. Even if they had managed to get past the first encounter quite easily, cheating wasn't going to win this either and they'd be disqualified if they tried anything brash. James sighed as he held out his hand for Alaya to grab, just waiting for her so they could bolt off across the land to get to the brooms.
After that, James would head straight for the brooms and get there as fast as he could to at least fly like the wind since he was the Gryffindor seeker, James guessed that Alaya would have to swim back or fly back too. James really didn't know if there was one broom or two, but he kept hoping for himself to actually get some luck for a change.
Notes; James is out of the lake and running like the wind after he gets Alaya out of the water.

It felt good to be on land and running, Dunstable was much better at running than he was at swimming. He glanced over at Yori who was running beside him and smiled lightly. He figured that they had to be one of the first teams to be out of the lake, he hadn’t heard any other screaming or spell casting so that was always a plus to figure out that they were close to the lead. No one could’ve finished just yet right?
“I have a good feeling that we’re one of the first ones out,
” said between breaths as the two of them ran through the forest. Where were the brooms? Hopefully the brooms wouldn’t be too far away. “ Point me” he whispered softly to find out which way was North just to make sure that the two of them were right on track. And they were, which was definitely a good thing. It had seemed that things were going to go along smoothly for the Hufflepuff duo. Dunstable hadn’t seen any sort of creature in sight. Which was something he preferred but he had a feeling that it wouldn’t last for very long. And unfortunately for him, he was right as the next thing he knew he felt a claw go across his ankles as he fell forward. “ YORI!” he called out to her so that she would stop and turn around. He didn’t even look to see if she had as instead he looked down towards his ankle to see what had gotten to him. And much to his displeasure, it was a red cap that happened to be snarling at him. Holding his wand out he pointed it at the devious red cap, trying his best to ignore the pain in his ankle. He wouldn’t have been surprised if it started to bleed soon. “ Confundos!” he called out hoping that the jinx would hit the red cap to confuse it. Despite her fears for various other things, Yori actually rather liked the forbidden forest. She wouldn't dare go traveling alone due to her various freak outs, but the rare visits inside were quite a bit of fun. The natural atmosphere it provided was a good source of inspiration on days that she had the time to sit down and write, though that meant dragging along someone she trusted enough to see that sort of side of her. That usually consisted of her brother, and pretty much her brother. The good news was, the gryffindor was almost always up for something a little daring, and a romp through the woods was definitely enticing.
The Japanese girl was honestly surprised to hear Dunstable's words, even turning her head to look over at the older boy. ”Wait... really?!” She asked before a yelp escaped, nearly colliding into a tree in her running path. Luckily, she was able to move out of the way and actually chew on that thought. They could actually be in second place, or first even. It seemed so hard to believe at this point, after all the weeks of just mustering the courage to even go through the role of champion and convincing others that it was the right choice. She wasn't just completing the tasks; they could be winning. That was easily one of the most exciting things she had heard all day.
Yori quickly came to a halt when she heard Dunstable call out her name, realizing that the boy was no long beside her. She quickly whirled around, not hesitating for a moment before trying to aide him. As she neared, she recognized the diminutive size of a dwarf, likely a red cap. ”I've got you!” she called out to her partner, pointing her wand to the creature. ”Impedimenta!”

Well now he could exactly tell her to wait for him, he doubted she would have heard him. How could she expect him to keep up with her? He pushed on, trying to find something that would give him extra speed. He could have transfigured his legs, but something about the sound of that just didn’t seem right. Besides it would me a minute of two of wasted time. They were one of the first teams into the forest but who knew where Hufflepuff was or how far back Ravenclaw and Gryffindor were.
And then he saw her, running back towards him. Uh did she know she was going the wrong way? Was that a snarl he heard? Why was she shaking her head? Was this an effect from some creature that had gotten to her? But then she nodded towards her back. Oh so she wanted him to ride her. Scorpius knew Theia was all about pride and for something like this, it was big to her. At least no one could see them in the forest right, a part of her pride was saved. He didn’t hesitate climbing onto her back. Where the hell was he meant to grab onto, he wondered. Surely she wouldn’t like him gripping her fur, nor her ears. It would feel weird having his arms around the tiger's neck. He didn’t have a chance to contemplate more before she took off. He took several minutes to balance himself and in the end he simply hand his hands on her back, keeping him steady, his wand still in his hand.
He heard her snarl, something that sounded like a warning and a threat rolled into one. He hadn’t done anything he thought. But a moment later he realised she was warning him of an oncoming creature. A redcap. They had been using the stupefy spell quiet successfully, so he decided he’d use it again. Why change when it had been working great? Raising his wand, he aimed it at the little dwarf like creature. "Stupefy," he called out, hoping the spell would hit the damn thing so that they could be on their way.

She watched it float off for a moment before swimming to the shore. She accepted James' help knowing that there was no time for stubbornness at this time. There were two teams ahead of them at at the least they did not want to be last. She knew it would take a little effort to get to the brooms but it would be worth it if they were quick enough to catch up with either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. Alaya dispelled the bubble charm thankful for the fresh air to breath. This task was really dragging on in Alaya's mind. She figured it was because of being soaked and lacking energy at that moment. She used a quick air drying spell which not only helped to dry her but also to stop the chill that was starting to creep down her spine. The weather was getting cold and being soaked with cold water did not help keep the chills away for very long.
She nodded to James before taking off in a run. The air was fresh and the forest was almost welcoming. It was a typical feeling for her where as others found the place dark and uninviting. It was for some but in her case it was home in a sense. The running was much better than the swimming portion. This was much easier on her and well to be frank, more fun. She did not care what type of creature they ran into in the forest if they did run into one. She could handle the forest creatures with out much trouble. That didn't have anything to do with her being a werewolf, just that care of magical creatures was her best subject and she had done a lot of studies on the many magical creatures during her free time.

Post by JAYCEN NATHANIEL TATE on Sept 5, 2011 19:58:46 GMT -6
When Claire finally appeared, Jaycen couldn’t relax a bit. Apparently Grindylows liked to work in teams to bring down their prey, because another had attached itself to her neck, which was a much worse position than Jayce’s leg. His leg was an annoyance, her neck was potentially dangerous if the creature’s fingers decided to tighten themselves until they cut off her air- or wait, how would that work seeing as they currently had gills on their necks? Jayce didn’t want to waste the time wondering about it at the moment, but did make a mental note to perhaps look up something of the sort once this challenge was done and he and Claire had passed with flying colors.
He saw his partner pull out her own wand, first trying to get her own little hitchhiker off. Whether it worked or not he didn’t notice, because his little bugger had begun its furious efforts to drag him deep to the depths of the lake again while he kicked at the water and the creature to attempt to free himself. The next second a jet of bubbles whizzed through the water, striking the nuisance in the head and its grip lessened for a moment. Jaycen took advantage of the opportunity, connecting his foot to the thing’s head once more, and it slipped away to the depths. He kicked both feet and pushed himself back towards the surface until he reached Claire’s level, but didn’t go on the move again until he was sure that she was okay.
Once he was sure both annoying grindylows had given up, he nodded to his partner and set off again in the same direction as before. But as he swam… he noticed something was wrong. Back when the grindylow had been attacking them, he’d thought that the tightness in his neck had just been a panic instinct, but it wasn’t fading away now that the ‘danger’ (if it could be called such) was gone. Then on the next stroke of his arms he noticed it; the webbing between his fingers was fast disappearing, shrinking into nothing. Jayce redoubled his efforts to move quickly, trying to push himself up towards the surface as well as forwards so that when the gillyweed did wear off he was not stranded thirty feet below the surface or something like that. He could see, below him, the floor of the lake seeming to rise up to meet him as he reached shallower waters, which was a comfort in that the Ravenclaw team was apparently reaching the shore where the next leg of the challenge would begin.
As always he checked back to Claire every few seconds, making sure that he hadn't left her in the dust- or, er, bubbles in his rush to get to the shore or that neither of their previous annoyances had come back for a second helping of Ravenclaw champion. It seemed like a matter of minutes after noticing the disappearing gillyweed effects, though, that he could no longer breath. He aimed for a more vertical route, bursting through the surface of the water to see the shore only about fifteen metres away, and quickly began swimming towards it on the surface so that he could breath, now completely human. Once his feet could touch bottom he pulled out his wand, pointing it behind him as he ran, "Accio shoes!" and he kept running. A few feet before he was out of the water he could hear the familiar whizzing sound of an approaching object, and turned at the beginnings of grass to catch both his and Claire's shoes. He placed hers on the ground beside him, waiting for her to join him as he put his on and looked into the trees, somewhere where their next mode of transportation was waiting. As soon as Claire joined him and got her own footwear on, you'd better bet the Ravenclaws would be off and running.

They were free! Free at last! Claire was surprised the stupid thing had let go of both her and Jaycen. Maybe Claicen wasn't screwed after all. They were doing pretty damn good actually. They were not dead at the bottom of the lake, so that had to count for something, right? Sure it did! Claire's mind finally grasped around the fact that they should keep going and she pulled Jaycen along while she swam for the surface. She was on a roll, for sure.
Her grip on Jaycen's are loosened and evetually let him go. The effects of the gillyweed were wearing out and Claire reached the surface just in time. She took a big gulp of air and opened her blue eyes. She looked at the shore and saw someone already running. SHe couldn't tell who it was and still, she didn't care. Claire kept swimming, her body getting goosebumps when she finally realized just how long she had been under the dreadful lake. She could hear the spectators cheering and devices being used to make noise. It pumped her up a bit, though the noise was beginning to fade as she set foot on land once again. She stopped herself from taking a short break. Breaks were for the weak! And so she pointed her wand across the lake, but Jaycen was quick and had already called out "Accio shoes!". She caught her sneakers in mid-air as he handed them to her and fumbled to put them on. Jaycen took the lead and she followed right behind him.

Theia was bouncing around too much; yup that’s what he was sticking too. Maybe Theia could sink her teeth into the pesky creature. Was the redcap taunting them? Oh it was so going to get it. So stupefy wasn’t working all that well for them on land, it had been much more effective in the water. One would think it would have been the other way around, but unfortunately not for them.
"Hold still Theia," he spoke to the tiger, twisting his back to look at the dwarf like creature. What other spell could he use? He hadn’t really thought of a back up spell in case stupefy hadn’t worked. In fact he had too much faith in that spell. Maybe if he confused the creature, it would chase after someone else. Raising his wand, he aimed it at the redcap, but it was moving too much for him to get a good shot. "Oi," he called out to the creature, making it halt in its path towards them. He didn’t have much time before it would continue heading their way. "Confundo," he called out, hoping that the confundus charm would work better for him. Heck he'd be even happier if his spell hit the redcap and it started attacking itself, now that would be a hilarious sight to see.

James was seriously sick of running into this crap that they threw out of nowhere and if he remembered correctly this terrain wasn't exactly the greatest for cutting across. One of the many things that annoyed him was running into that giant squid, and then right after a tiny little plimpy to hinder their tracks. What the hell was up with this? James knew what he had signed up for, but blast-ended skrewts were very dangerous in any body's books. Only he remembered how to defeat them since his father had told him a story once about it, but it had been quite a long time since then. Now all he had to do was focus on the skrewts and hope he could get past them.
What spell could they use, he only knew of a few that could get him and Alaya out of this predicament trying to think of the right spell to use. Rumbling in his mind over and over what it was that he had seen used many times on some of the other skrewts they had seen. Yet they weren't a creature you normally trifled with at all and it was hard to detain them no matter how much thought you put into what spell you wanted to use. It all depended on how potent the power was of the spell itself, but he raised his and and aimed. Nodding to Alaya to just use whatever spell she deemed necessary to defend herself but he was trying to attack both creatures. "Descendo" he cast at the one to attempt to sink it into the earth.
Notes; James is using Descendo on the blast-ended skrewts to help Alaya use her own spell..

as scorpius' spell missed theia growled slightly, a small grumble in her chest as if to same 'aim better'. the thing danced mockingly by so close theia couldn't resist but snarl and open her jaws, going to snap at it and try and get a chunk of it. she managed to just brush the edge of one of her dagger-like fangs against it and caught a trail of blood but that was it, nothing really. she snarled again, making another grumble as the horrible hint of blood enveloped her mouth with it's disgusting taste.
she shook her head slightly and heard scorp's words - "Hold still Theia," she huffed and dug her large, powerful paws into the dirt, halting her stride immediately and jolting her limbs in the process, grimacing at the jar in her joints but otherwise not caring. she turned her head to try and get a look in on what was happening, going to turn slightly as that scorp could have a better aim at the ugly brute rather than have to twist round.
"Oi," she heard him shout and she cringed slightly at the loudness of it with her sensitive tigress hearing, watching with faint amusement as the thing stopped and allowed a spell to be shot toward it. theia watched eagerly, hoping it would hit home, muscles tensed and ready to pound on forward toward the brooms as soon as the thing hit the dirt...

She breathed a sigh of relief when the red cap was quickly thrown off with the combination of spells, grabbing onto Durnstable and trying to get back to running-- in case the red cap decided to get up. Yori had sincere doubts, but she didn't want either of them to get hurt anymore about it. The Japanese girl eyed her companions ankles, frowning. ”Are you gonna be alright?” The hufflepuff was about to stop and check on the possible cuts until she spotted a clearing where the brooms laid. They were at the last leg of the race already. Yori was just one flight away from surviving her first task as Hufflepuff champion.
Oh why did it have to be flying?! She screeched to a halt next to a broom, and had spent a good minute or two just dumbly staring at it. Wracking her brain enough could get her to remember how to fly... actually flying was another matter. She did her best to take calming, deep breaths as the anxiety filled her, picking the broom up. ”Dun... Make...” She trailed off for a moment, trying to figure out what she wanted to say. ”Can you make sure I don't fall?”

Jayce set off at a pretty quick pace, of course being careful that he didn’t fall flat on his face and break a leg or something like that on a tree root, but paused after only a few metres to look back at Claire, waiting for her to catch up to him and afterwards only keeping pace with the female Ravenclaw champion. It didn’t do any good for him to be ages ahead of her when he would have to wait for her to catch up before advancing any further, anyways. Besides, the forest was still a pretty dangerous area and they didn’t want to get separated to be left to defend off some animals on their own. He flashed her a quick grin, “The worst is over, eh? Flying’s no biggie.” Even with Claire’s apparent fear of large bodies of water and swimming, he thought she’d pulled off the first part of the task rather well. Of course, he had no idea what had been going on in her brain, which could have easily been ‘I’M GONNA DIE!’ the entire swim, but… she’d hid it well. Or maybe he was just extremely oblivious. Either way, once this task was done with and they had more time he would be sure to congratulate her on overcoming her fear for the sake of their team and Ravenclaw.
He tried not to get too ahead of his partner as they hurried through the trees, keeping an eye out for the broomsticks that would carry them back to the beginning- or would it be to the end? of this challenge, hopefully with a Ravenclaw victory under their belts. But he couldn’t get ahead of himself, he had to focus on the present and focus about the now. If his mind wasn’t here, and something happened, he’d be rather unprepared.
Apparently that had been foreshadowing. Almost out of nowhere appeared countless pixies, swarming around them. Whether they’d tripped a pixie nest or this was just a very cleverly laid trap by the hogwarts staff, Jayce didn’t know. “Shit,” he growled as one swooped down near his head, causing the seventh year to duck and pull out his wand. The little buggers were more annoying than they were dangerous, but Jaycen didn’t want to waste any time. Pointing his wand above at the swarm of bluey creatures he hissed out the first spell that came to mind: “Immobulus!”
